Book Review: One True Loves, by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of the very few authors I have on auto-buy – I’ve loved every single work of hers that I’ve read, mostly because I love how she beautifully captures emotions.

So when I found myself not knowing what to read after two great finds, I thought “when in doubt, TJR” and decided to pick one her books I hadn’t yet read (there aren’t many).

I chose One True Loves after seeing a review by Anika of Chapters of May which made me think this was the book I needed.

One True Loves is a beautiful and heartbreaking story about growing up, learning who you are and what you truly want in your life and, as the title suggests, about true love (and second chances).

And it’s one of those books that makes all your emotions bubble up, even if the situations it describes are totally foreign to you. They were to me and I felt my heart tightening and my stomach turning at just how real and raw the emotions were.

The way this story captures the trauma of loss and grief is so raw, and real and painful – it beautifully shows how grief can consume you, while at the same time showing it doesn’t have to last forever.

I particularly loved how this novel highlighted growing up, evolving and learning who you are and what you want, what makes you happy – and how it connected that to the definition of ‘true love’. Through Emma’s journey, how she matures and changes throughout her life (as do her passions and her life goals), TJR challenges every day views of ‘true love’, from a once-in-a-lifetime thing to something that evolves as you do.

In spite of how it portrays grief, loss and heartbreak, this is a novel you will just fly through, it’s so easy to read. It felt healing for me, in a way, like it gave me permission to feel all the feelings it brought up about love, growing up and deciding what I want in life.

It jumps in time a bit in the beginning to tell Emma’s stories with Jesse and Sam separately (which I get but wished took a bit longer) and it feels ever so slightly rushed towards the end (again, I wish it was more developed) – but even still the story flows effortlessly and the characters, both main and supporting, are well-developed and really easy to connect to.

In short: I loved this and highly recommend you pick it up too!

To peak your curiosity a bit further – there is even a movie based on this book currently in post production, starring Philippa Soo, Simu Liu and Luke Bracey. I’m cautiously optimistic (and a little excited) to see this!

Taylor Jenkins Reid é uma das poucas autoras que tenho em auto-buy – adorei cada obra dela que li, principalmente porque sou grande fã da forma como ela descreve lindamente as emoções.

Então, quando me vi sem saber o que ler depois de duas ótimas descobertas, pensei “na dúvida, TJR” e decidi escolher um livro dela que ainda não tinha lido (não são muitos).

Escolhi One True Loves depois de ver uma review da Anika de Chapters of May que me fez pensar que este era o livro que eu precisava.

One True Loves é uma história linda e comovente sobre crescer, aprender quem somos e o que realmente queremos na nossa vida e, como o título sugere, sobre o amor verdadeiro (e segundas oportunidades).

É um daqueles livros que faz todas as emoções vir ao de cima, mesmo que as situações que descreve sejam totalmente estranhas para nós. Eram para mim e mesmo assim senti o coração apertar e o estômago revirar com o quão reais e sem filtro eram as emoções.

A maneira como a história descreve o trauma da perda e do luto é tão real e dolorosa – mostra bem como o luto pode consumir uma pessoa, ao mesmo tempo em que mostra que não precisa de durar para sempre.

Eu adorei especialmente a forma como o romance destaca o crescimento, o evoluir e aprender quem somos e o que queremos, o que nos faz feliz – e como liga isso à ideia de ‘amor verdadeiro’. Através do desenvolvimento de Emma, como ela amadurece e muda ao longo da vida (assim como as paixões e os objetivos de vida que tem), a TJR desafia a forma como o ‘amor verdadeiro’ é visto, de uma coisa única na vida a algo que evolui à medida que a pessoa cresce.

Apesar de retratar a dor, a perda e o desgosto, este é um romance que se lê super rápido e é tão fácil de ler. De certa forma, foi apaziguador para mim, como se me desse permissão para sentir todos os sentimentos que trouxe ao de cima sobre o amor, o crescer e o decidir o que quero na vida.

Salta um pouco no tempo no princípio para contar as histórias de Emma com Jesse e Sam separadamente (o que eu percebo, mas mesmo assim queria que demorasse um pouco mais) e parece um pouco apressado no final (mais uma vez, gostava que fosse mais desenvolvido) – mas mesmo assim a história flui sem esforço e os personagens, principais e secundários, são bem desenvolvidos e é muito fácil de criar uma ligação com eles enquanto se lê.

Resumindo: adorei este livro e recomendo vivamente que leiam também!

Para aumentar ainda mais a vossa curiosidade – há até um filme baseado neste livro que está actualmente em pós-produção, e que conta com Philippa Soo, Simu Liu e Luke Bracey nos principais papéis. Estou cautelosamente optimista (e um bocadinho entusiasmada) para ver isto!
