Eternals was hailed as the big movie of the MCU’s Phase 4 – an all star cast, a recent Oscar winner director, a lot of weight behind the promotional campaign.
But is it worth watching? My spoiler free thoughts below.
The story follows a group of imortal beings, the Eternals, who were sent to Earth by the Celestial Arishem to fight the Deviants.
After dispersing for around 500 years, the Eternals reunite – and are faced with big decisions and moral dilemmas.
As the various characters are torn between their mission, their loyalty to Arishem, and doing what they think is right for Earth/Humanity, the movie allows us to know the characters slowly – what drives them, their emotions, their lives.
It’s an epic story which is told more elegantly in relation to the usual Marvel movies. It’s delicate and graceful while still being an action movie. It’s packed with great relationships – most notably the MCU’s first openly gay superhero! – and fantastic supporting characters.
Overall I enjoyed the movie, but I didn’t love it as much as I would have hoped. It has a lot of jumping back and forth that feels a bit tiring, and it’s also mostly quite dark, so I was squinting for most of the duration of the movie.
The storyline isn’t particularly clear, I thought some of it felt rushed and that the deviant subplot could have been developed/explained further. And although you get to know the characters a little, it didn’t feel quite enough (for the most part) to pull me in, the way Marvel productions usually do.
I enjoyed the banter between characters in some scenes, but even that was limited – and that is usually the best part of any Marvel movie!
In terms of the cast, I thought Gemma Chan was lovely as Sersi – her compassion, kindness and appreciation for Humanity being the driving force of the story. Kumail Nanjiani was brilliant as Kingo, nailing both his action sequences and more humorous moments. And I loved Lauren Ridloff’s Makkari (MCU’s first deaf superhero!) and her relationship with Barry Keoghan’s Druid.
But my favourites by far were the supporting actors. Harish Patel as Karun, Kingo’s manager absolutely stole the show – he was loveable, loyal and had hilarious one-liners!
And Kit Harington was amazing as Dane Whitman – super natural, charming and funny, making (at least) me want to see much more of his character in the future of the MCU.
More than the Eternals storyline itself, I was excited for the possibilities it opens up within the MCU – and those came mostly from the very end and the two end credit scenes.
Eternals is unquestionably a big departure from Marvel norm – it actually took me a while to process! It’s an original: elegant while being full of action, and also really moving.
Above everything – it leaves the door open for so many stories/possibilities, which is so exciting!

Depois de se dispersarem por cerca de 500 anos, os Eternals reunem-se – e deparam-se com grandes decisões e dilemas morais.
Com os vários personagens divididos entre a missão, a lealdade para com Arishem e o fazer o que acham que é certo para a Terra/Humanidade, o filme permite conhecer os personagens lentamente – o que os move, as suas emoções, as suas vidas.
É uma história épica contada de forma mais elegante em relação ao que é habitual nos filmes da Marvel. É delicado, apesar de ser um filme de acção. Está cheio de relações bem construídas – destaque entre elas para o primeiro super-herói abertamente gay do MCU! – e fantásticos personagens secundários.
No geral, gostei do filme, mas não amei como esperava. Anda muito para a frente e para trás, o que se torna cansativo, e também é bastante escuro, tanto que eu passei boa parte do filme a esforçar os olhos para ver.
O enredo não é particularmente claro, achei que parecia um bocado apressado e que a história dos Deviants podia ter sido mais desenvolvida/explicada. E apesar de dar para conhecer um pouco os personagens, não achei que fosse suficiente (no geral) para me prender como costuma acontecer com as produções da Marvel.
Gostei da brincadeira e das bocas entre os personagens em algumas cenas, mas até isso é limitado – e essa é geralmente a melhor parte de qualquer filme da Marvel!
Em termos de elenco, achei a Gemma Chan adorável no papel de Sersi – a sua compaixão, gentileza e apreço pela Humanidade são a força motriz da história. O Kumail Nanjiani está brilhante como Kingo, fazendo muito bem tanto as sequências de acção como os momentos mais humorísticos. E adorei a Makkari de Lauren Ridloff (primeiro super-herói surdo do MCU!) e seu relacionamento com o Druig de Barry Keoghan.
Mas os meus favoritos, de longe, foram os actores secundários. Harish Patel como Karun, o assistente de Kingo foi o melhor de tudo – adorável, leal e com entradas hilariantes!
E Kit Harington está incrível como Dane Whitman – super natural, charmoso e engraçado, fazendo com que (pelo menos) eu queira ver muito mais do seu personagem no futuro do MCU.
Mais do que o Eternals em si, fiquei entusiasmada com todas as possibilidades que o filme abre dentro do MCU – e essas vieram principalmente do final e as duas cenas depois dos créditos finais.
Eternals é, sem dúvida, uma mudança grande em relação às normas da Marvel – na verdade, demorei um bocado a processar o filme! É elegante, cheio de ação e também realmente comovente.
Acima de tudo – deixa a porta aberta para tantas histórias / possibilidades, me deixa super entusiasmada!
