Ever since I can remember, I have had a fascination with handbags – I remember loving looking through my grandma’s, mum’s and aunts’ too, as well as just admiring those classic pieces I only saw in magazines (like the Chanel 2.55, among many others).
So when I saw the V&A had an exhibition dedicated to handbags, I knew I had to get tickets and go!
The V&A is one of my favourite museums for its collection (the jewellery section is insane) and for the amazing fashion exhibitions it holds. I love following the history of fashion items/brands, seeing how they evolved to what we know today. They’re collections of beautiful things with a bit of History mixed in – all I love!
The ‘Bags Inside Out’ exhibition is housed at the centre of the fashion hall, and it explores the evolution of the handbag – from small fabric pouches to oversized leather bags – throughout history.
From function & utility – carrying someone’s possessions from place to place – to status & identity – showing who we are and who we want to be – bags have become an essential part of life, and of fashion too.
I loved seeing the various bags – from the little pouches used in Edwardian/Victorian times, to the military backpacks and government briefcases, to the more modern bags we know and love.
Highlights for me where:
Vivien Leigh’s box of letters – a little suitcase where she kept her correspondence and writing materials to respond.
A Louis Vuitton trunk that belonged to a socialite and travelled in Titanic’s sister ship, the Olympia.
Jane Birkin’s Birkin bag – complete with marks from the stickers she liked to keep on it.
But I also loved reading about the story of the various bags – the development and evolution of the Chanel 2.55, the Hermés Kelly, the Dior Lady…
On the upper floor, the section dedicated to daring designs really captures the attention – original, unusual pieces from a variety of creators that are as cool as they are beautiful.
And then finally a section to explain the craftsmanship that goes into creating these pieces – working the leather, building prototypes, it’s all detailed work. This part of the exhibit makes you really appreciate the artistry behind these beautiful pieces!
Bags Inside Out is quite a small exhibition – but if you’re passionate (as I am) about handbags of all kinds, I would highly recommend a visit.
The exhibition will be in the V&A until the 16th January 2022, and tickets are £12 for an adult.

Desde que me lembro, sempre tive um fascínio por malas e carteiras – lembro-me de adorar ver as da minha avó, da minha mãe e das minhas tias, e também de admirar aquelas peças clássicas que só via em revistas (como a Chanel 2.55, entre muitas outras).
Por isso, quando vi que o museu V&A tinha uma exposição dedicada a malas, soube que tinha que comprar bilhete e ir!
O V&A é um dos meus museus favoritos pela sua colecção (a secção de jóias é uma loucura) e pelas incríveis exposições de moda que realiza. Adoro acompanhar a história das peças ou marcas de moda, ver como evoluíram até o que conhecemos hoje. São coleções de coisas lindas com um pouco de História misturada – tudo que eu amo!
A exposição ‘Bags Inside Out’ está localizada no centro da secção de moda e explora a evolução da mala – de pequenas bolsas de tecido a grandes malas de pele – ao longo da história.
Da funcionalidade e utilidade – transportar os bens de alguém de um lugar para outro – ao status e identidade – mostrar quem somos e quem queremos ser – as malas tornaram-se parte essencial da vida e da moda também.
Adorei ver as várias malas – desde as pequenas bolsas usadas na época Eduardiana/Vitoriana, às mochilas militares e pastas do governo, às malas mais modernas que hoje conhecemos.
Os meus destaques foram:
A caixa de correspondência de Vivien Leigh – uma pequena mala onde guardava a sua correspondência e material de escrita para responder.
Um baú de viagem da Louis Vuitton que pertencia a uma socialite e viajou no navio irmão do Titanic, o Olympia.
A Birkin de Jane Birkin – completa com marcas dos adesivos que ela gostava de lhe por.
Mas também adorei ler sobre a história das várias malas – o desenvolvimento e a evolução da Chanel 2.55, da Hermés Kelly, da Dior Lady …
No andar superior, a seção dedicada a designs ousados chama mesmo a atenção – peças originais e inesperadas de uma variedade de criadores que são tão giras!
E, finalmente, uma secção para explicar a habilidade necessária para criar essas peças – trabalhar o couro, construir protótipos, é tudo um trabalho detalhado. Esta parte da exposição faz com que se aprecie muito mais a arte por trás destas peças!
Bags Inside Out é uma exposição pequena – mas se forem apaixonados (como eu) por malas de todos os tipos, recomendo muito uma visita.
A exposição está no V&A até dia 16 de Janeiro de 2022, e a entrada custa £ 12 para um adulto.
