Over the past year, I’ve been finding it much harder to get stuck in to a new book – with the pandemic, work stress, and everything in between, it takes a lot to make me want to stick with a book from start to finish.
However when I found out that Taylor Jenkins-Reid (TJR) was publishing a new novel, I knew I would want to read it – and fast! TJR is the author behind ‘Daisy Jones and The Six’ as well as ‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ (two of my favourites of recent years) as well as other great titles – I love her writing style and the stories she tells, so I was immediately excited, and pre-ordered it as soon as I could from my favourite Notting Hill independent bookstore.
Here are my three reasons why you should read Malibu Rising.
TJR’s Writing Style
You’ll know if you ever read one of her books, but TJR has a distinctive style of writing that makes it so easy to visualise the places, people and events she’s describing – it’s immersive and really fun to get lost in for a bit! Malibu Rising takes the reader to the California coast line in the 70s and 80s – it feels warm, salty, carefree. It’s Summer at its Californian best.
Family Bonds (& Drama)
The story centres around a group of siblings, children of a world famous musician, and how their lives are intertwined. Through flashbacks the story tells the family story, how their family bonds were formed in such a strong, special way – and then in the ‘present’ day (in the 80s, when the book is set), it shows the siblings as individuals who want to forge their own path.
80s Surf & Music Vibes
Malibu Rising puts the reader smack dab in the California of the 70s and 80s – with all the magic of Surf and Rock n Roll. It’s a fantastic Summer read – and honestly the best bit of escapism for a Summer when travel isn’t quite as free as we’d hoped.

Estilo de Escrita da TJR
Se alguma vez tiverem lido um dos seus livros, sabem que a TJR tem um estilo distinto de escrita que torna super fácil visualizar os lugares, pessoas e eventos que descreve – é envolvente e óptimo para um pouco de escapismo! ‘Malibu Rising’ leva o leitor à costa da Califórnia nos anos 70 e 80 – sente-se o calor, o sal do mar, a despreocupação. É o melhor que o Verão da Califórnia tem para oferecer.
Laços (& Dramas) de Família
A história gira em torno de um grupo de irmãos, filhos de um músico mundialmente famoso, e de como suas vidas estão interligadas. Por meio de flashbacks, o livro conta a história da família, como seus laços familiares foram formados de uma forma tão forte e especial – e, no ‘presente’ (nos anos 80, onde se passa a história), mostra os irmãos como indivíduos que querem seguir o seu próprio caminho.
Surf e Música dos Anos 80
Malibu Rising leva o leitor à Califórnia dos anos 70 e 80 – com toda a magia do surf e do rock n roll. É uma fantástica leitura de verão – e honestamente, o melhor escapismo para um verão quando viajar não é tão fácil quanto esperávamos.

Se quiserem um livro para vos transportar para um ambiente de Verão num lugar diferente, recomendo muito que leiam Malibu Rising – e que pesquisem no Spotify por uma das playlists que lhe são dedicadas – que, para mim, não podem falhar uma das minhas canções favoritas de todos os tempos: Malibu das Hole.
