Today I’m sharing the final post on my three part series about the experience of flying back to the UK with the ongoing travel restrictions. After the preparation and the travel day, comes the quarantine at home, and the mandatory day 2 and day 8 tests.
Preparing for Quarantine
During your quarantine time, you are required to stay home and can face quite a hefty penalty if you do leave, so it’s worth checking the rules and making sure you have everything you need for your 10 days at home.
In the UK it’s pretty easy to get deliveries at home – so make sure you organise a supermarket delivery for the day of arrival, or early the next day, so you have supplies!
Day 2 test
The tests you need to take after arrival need to be purchased pre-flight so you can add the reference to the Passenger Locator Form. Once that’s done, you will get the test kits sent to you individually. The day 2 test will be with you either on the day you arrive (day 0) or the day after (day 1).
The test comes with detailed instructions, which are easy to understand and follow. You’ll need to take a swab to your throat and both nostrils, then place it in a vial already supplied with the liquid, close it tightly and place it in the prepaid return envelope.
Then drop the test off at a post box. I was quite confused because that means leaving the house, but that is allowed within quarantine, so long as you wear a mask when going outside. Make sure you check where your nearest Royal Mail Priority Post Box is, and pay special attention to the last collection times on the day you’ll be taking the tests, particularly if it’s a weekend or a bank holiday.
Day 8 test
I received a second test kit around day 6 of my quarantine, to be taken on day 8. The test method was the same: take a swab from your throat and both nostrils, package securely and post off for analysis.
Results
The test results are meant to come back quite quickly but mine took a few days. My day 2 test was taken and posted on a Saturday, and I only got the result the following Friday, as I was about to do my day 8 test.
As for my day 8 test, I took and posted it on Good Friday, and got the result on the following Thursday, so again it was almost a week.
Not sure if this is due to Royal Mail issues, delays at the Lab, or bad luck with the days I posted the tests (a Saturday and a bank holiday) – but just be prepared for slight delays.
Leaving Quarantine
You’re allowed to leave Quarantine after day 10 if you are feeling ok and your day 2 and day 8 test results are negative.
Be prepared to wait a little longer than the 10 days, though, as you might also face slight delays in getting the test results back. But then…it’s best to be safe!
Once you do go out – please make sure to wear your mask correctly (covering mouth and nose), wash/sanitise your hands and keep your distance from others. This pandemic is still not over and we can never be too careful.

Preparar a Quarentena
Durante a quarentena, é obrigatório ficar em casa e arrisca-se uma multa pesada se não se cumprir, por isso vale a pena verificar bem as regras e ver se temos tudo o que precisamos para 10 dias em casa.
No UK é muito fácil receber entregas em casa – por isso é bom organizar uma entrega de supermercado para o dia da chegada (ou para o dia seguinte) para garantir que têm mantimentos!
Teste no 2o dia
Os testes obrigatórios têm de ser comprados antes do voo para a referência poder ser incluída no Passenger Locator Form. Tendo isso feito, os kits para fazer o teste em casa são enviados individualmente. O teste do 2o dia chega ou no dia da chegada (dia 0) ou no dia seguinte (dia 1).
O teste traz instruções detalhadas, que são fáceis de perceber e seguir. Precisam de tirar uma amostra da garganta e das duas narinas, e depois colocá-la num frasquinho próprio que já traz líquido, fechar bem e por no envelope para devolução.
A devolução é feita por correio. Fiquei um bocado confusa porque isso implica sair de casa para ir por o teste no correio, mas isso é permitido na quarentena desde que se vá com máscara. Verifiquem qual é a caixa de correio prioritária mais próxima e prestem bem atenção à última recolha do dia, especialmente se forem fazer o teste num fim-de-semana ou feriado.
Teste no 8o dia
O segundo kit chegou a minha casa no 6o dia da quarentena, para ser feito no 8o dia. O método do teste foi igual: amostra da garganta e narinas, embalar com segurança e enviar para análise.
Resultados
Os resultados deviam ser rápidos, mas os meus demoraram um bocado. O do 2o dia foi feito e enviado num Sábado, e só recebi o resultado na sexta-feira seguinte, quando já ia fazer o teste do 8o dia.
E o teste do 8o dia, que foi feito e enviado na Sexta-feira Santa, também só chegou na Quinta-feira seguinte, portanto quase uma semana outra vez.
Não sei se foi problema com o Royal Nail, se foram atrasos no Laboratório, ou azar com os dias em que calharam os meus testes (um Sábado e um feriado) – mas fiquem a contar com alguns atrasos.
Deixar a Quarentena
Pode-se deixar a quarentena depois do dia 10 se se estiver a sentir bem e tiver tido resultado negativo para os testes dos dias 2 e 8.
Fiquem preparados para esperar mais do que os 10 dias, tendo em conta os atrasos com os testes. Mas pronto…mais vale prevenir!
Quando finalmente saírem – por favor não se esqueçam de usar a máscara correctamente (a cobrir boca e nariz), de lavar/desinfectar as mãos e manter a distância de outras pessoas. Está pandemia ainda não acabou e todo o cuidado é pouco.
