image source: @falconandwintersoldier InstagramLet’s face it – 2021 didn’t get off to a great start. With lockdowns and restrictions, the first few months of this year haven’t given us much to be excited over.
That’s when the MCU and Disney+ came in, announcing exciting new formats & stories which had all us MCU fans buzzing.
WandaVision was the first and it got us off to a fantastic start – original, exciting and so fun to uncover every week.
And then we got the treat that was The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Following Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) in a post-Endgame world, this series could be mistaken as one that is closer to the MCU movies – but it’s so much more than that. Here are three reasons why (if you haven’t yet) you should watch TFATWS.
Reason One
The first reason is the impressive development of the main characters. Sam and Bucky both face several challenges over the course of the six episodes, together but most importantly individually. Bucky deals with his own history, his past actions as The Winter Soldier, as he tries to make amends – his grief, guilt, sorrow and will to do better clearly visible to the very last episode.
Sam must deal with the weight of being passed the Captain America shield – and taking on that mantel as Black man in a country that has treated others like him so unfairly. The internal struggle, the determination and Sam’s unwavering will to do good drive the series.
Reason Two
TFATWS does not shy away from matters of racial injustice & discrimination. From the start the series sets up tough discussions – and does that through beautiful, powerful writing that is incredibly acted.
The introduction of Isaiah Bradley’s story is expertly done, it fits seamlessly into the wider story and is heartbreaking because while it involves super serums and super soldiers, it’s painfully relatable to actual issues going on not just in the US, but the world.
Reason Three
Zemo, John Walker, Sharon Carter, The Flag Smashers – all of them leave you wondering whether they’re good or bad guys and that adds to what makes this series so enjoyable.
Characters that are mysterious and complex (and so well written/acted!) leave you guessing at every turn. What could be more enjoyable?
Bonus Reason Four
All the details! The links & comparisons to the MCU movies, the symbolism, the new characters and the references to their comic versions – there’s always so much to unpack in each episode, and that’s part of the fun of watching this series.

Sejamos honestos – 2021 não começou da melhor forma. Com confinamentos e restrições, os primeiros meses deste ano não nos deram grande coisa que nos entusiasmasse.
Foi aí que entraram o MCU e o Disney+, a anunciar formatos novos e histórias que deixaram os fans do Universo Marvel super entusiasmados.
WandaVision foi o primeiro desses formatos, e começou de forma fantástica – original, emocionante e tão divertido de descobrir a cada semana.
E depois recebemos o deleite que dá pelo nome de The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Ao seguir Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) e Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) num mundo pós-Endgame, esta série podia ser tomada como semelhante ao estilo dos filmes da Marvel – mas é muito mais que isso. Aqui ficam três razões pelas quais (se ainda não o fizeram) deviam ver o TFATWS.
Razão Um
A primeira razão é o desenvolvimento dos personagens principais. Tanto o Sam como o Bucky enfrentam vários desafios ao longo dos seis episódios, juntos mas especialmente enquanto indivíduos. O Bucky lida com a sua história, as suas acções passadas enquanto Winter Soldier, enquanto tenta compensar o mal que fez – a sua dor, o sentimento de culpa, a tristeza e a vontade de fazer melhor são visíveis até ao último episódio.
O Sam tem de lidar com o peso de lhe ter sido passado o escudo de Capitão América – e de assumir esse papel enquanto homem Negro num país que tratou outros como ele de forma tão injusta. A luta interna, a determinação e a vontade inabalável que o Sam tem de fazer o bem são o fio condutor da série.
Razão Dois
TFATWS não se inibe de discutir questões de justiça racial e discriminação. Desde o início, a série cria espaço para discussões difíceis – e fá-lo lindamente, através de escrita poderosa que é muitíssimo bem representada.
A introdução da história de Isaiah Bradley é feita de forma excepcional, encaixando-se perfeitamente na história maior da série e é emocionante porque embora meta super serums e super soldados, é dolorosamente fácil de estabelecer a ligação aos problemas que se vivem não só nos EUA, mas no mundo.
Razão Três
Todos os restantes personagens – Zemo , John Walker, Sharon Carter, The Flag Smashers – nos deixam a pensar se são ou não são vilões, e isso é parte do que dá tanto gozo de ver a série.
Personagens misteriosos e complexos (e tão bem escritos/representados!) deixam-nos sempre na dúvida. O que poderia ser melhor?
Razão Bónus Quatro
Todos os detalhes! As ligações e comparações com os filmes da Marvel, o simbolismo, os personagens novos e as referências às versões dos comics – há sempre tanta coisa para dissecar a cada episódio, e isso é parte da diversão de ver esta série.
