3 reasons to read ‘The Final Revival of Opal & Nev’

I am very much a mood reader – I have to be in the right mood (and frame of mind) to really get into a book, and sometimes if the book isn’t exactly what I’m in the mood to read, I won’t get past the first few chapters. Recently it’s been hard to find a book that really captivates me and makes me want to read at any spare moment I have.

That is, until last Saturday on a walk through London with my friend Rita, I got my hands on ‘The Final Revival of Opal & Nev’ by Dawnie Walton. I started reading it on the tube ride home (first time in over a year since that happened!) and finished it in 4 days. And would’ve finished sooner if I didn’t decide to savour the last few chapters.

Opal & Nev follows music journalist S. Sunny Charles as she prepares to write the story of Opal & Nev, a 1970s band who shoots to fame then flames out shortly after, to coincide with their big reunion.

Dawnie Watson creates a very real set of characters and events, full of colour and music – and the novel is a powerhouse. Here are three (of the many) reasons why you should read ‘The Final Revival of Opal & Nev’.

Reason One

Opal & Nev is written in interview style, meant to follow Sunny’s interviews and discussions with the main people involved in the band’s history. It also includes editor notes to provide further insight and commentary.

With all of this, Opal & Nev reads a lot like if you were watching a ‘Behind the Music’ programme on this band’s story. If you love music documentaries, books about the music industry, music in the 1970s – you will love this.

Reason Two

Through a variety of mismatched characters, the novel allows us to imagine what the music industry in New York in the 1970s was like. Some characters you grow fond of, others you associate with things that should’ve been left in the 70s – all of them are complex, flawed and great fun to read. Especially as the writing changes with each testimonial and you can almost hear each character’s voice.

I particularly loved how strong and determined both Sunny and Opal are – although in different styles and times of their lives.

Reason Three

Opal & Nev doesn’t shy away from discussing key aspects of race and racial injustice – particularly towards Black women who are bold and brave enough to be themselves & speak their truth.

The injustice is clear in the pain of the characters testimonials and even on the editor’s notes. But the perseverance & will to stand for justice is also there and it is inspiring.

Opal & Nev is a fantastic read and it is so realistic I had to stop myself from googling photos of the band or looking for their songs on Spotify – and isn’t that the sign of a story beautifully told? The author actually created a playlist to go along with the book which I’ll leave here if you want to check it out.

If you enjoy music, especially music from the 1970s, and brilliant books with strong characters, I highly recommend this.

Sou muito de ler por humores – tenho de estar com o humor certo (e com cabeça) para me perder mesmo num livro e às vezes, se o livro não é exactamente o que me apetece ler, nem passo dos primeiros capítulos. Ultimamente tem sido difícil encontrar um livro que me prenda e me dê vontade de passar todos os minutos livres que tenho a ler.

Isto até, num passeio com a minha amiga Rita no sábado passado, ter encontrado ‘The Final Revival of Opal & Nev’ de Dawnie Walton. Comecei a ler na viagem de metro para casa (a primeira vez que fiz isto em mais de um ano!) e acabei em 4 dias. Até tinha acabado mais cedo, se não tivesse decidido saborear os últimos capítulos.

‘Opal & Nev’ segue a jornalista de música S. Sunny Charles enquanto esta se prepara para escrever a história de Opal & Nev, uma banda dos anos 1970 que encontra a fama rapidamente e pouco depois desaparece, para coincidir com o reencontro em palco da banda.

Dawnie Watson cria um conjunto de personagens e eventos realistas, cheios de cor e música – e o livro é incrível. Aqui ficam três (das várias) razões pelas quais deviam ler ‘The Final Revival of Opal & Nev’.

Razão Um

Opal & Nev é escrito no estilo de entrevista, como se fosse a seguir as entrevistas e conversas de Sunny com as várias pessoas envolvidas na história da banda. Também inclui notas da editora para acrescentar mais informação e comentários.

Com tudo isto, o livro lê-se muito como se estivéssemos a ver um ‘Behind the Music’ da história desta banda. Se gostarem de documentários de música, livros sobre a indústria da música, música dos anos 1970 – vão adorar este livro.

Razão Dois

Através de vários personagens muito distintos, o livro permite-nos imaginar como seria a indústria da música nos anos 1970 em Nova Iorque. Ficamos a gostar de alguns personagens, outros associamos a coisas que deviam ter ficado nos anos 70 – todos eles são complexos, têm falhas e são muito bons de ler. Especialmente porque a escrita muda com cada testemunho e quase podemos ouvir a voz de cada personagem.

Eu gostei particularmente da força e determinação de Sunny e Opal – ainda que em estilos e épocas diferentes da vida.

Razão Três

Opal & Nev não se inibe de falar de temas importantes como a injustiça racial – particularmente em relação a mulheres Negras que são destemidas e corajosas o suficiente para serem elas mesmas e dizer o que pensam.

A injustiça fica clara na dor dos testemunhos dos vários personagens e mesmo nas notas da editora. Mas a perseverança e a vontade de lutar pela justiça também lá está e é inspiradora.

Opal & Nev é um óptimo livro que se lê muito bem e é tão realista que tive de me lembrar que era ficção para não ir ao Google procurar fotografias da banda, ou ao Spotify procurar as suas músicas – não é um sinal de uma história super bem contada? A autora criou aliás uma playlist para acompanhar o livro que deixo aqui se quiserem espreitar.

Se gostam de música, especialmente de música dos anos 1970, e de livros bons com personagens cheias de força, recomendo muito!
