When I read Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale a couple of years ago, I remember loving how it showed what WWII was like for women – both the ones who stayed home & those who had active roles in the Resistance. So when I saw a documentary on Netflix called ‘Women at War 1939-1945’, I knew it would be one I had to watch.
Quando há uns anos li The Nightingale de Kristin Hannah, lembro-me de ter adorado a forma como o livro mostrava como a Segunda Guerra Mundial tinha sido para as mulheres – tanto as que ficaram em casa, como as que tiveram papéis activos na Resistência. Por isso quando vi um documentário no Netflix chamado ‘Women at War 1939-1945’, soube que ia ter de ver.
Beautifully narrated by the great French actress Nathalie Baye, this documentary paints a picture of a France where equality seemed like a pipe dream, and follows key Resistance figures through the years of the war.
Narrado lindamente pela grande actriz Francesa Nathalie Baye, este documentário mostra uma França onde a igualdade parecia um sonho impossível, e segue figuras chave da Resistência durante os anos da guerra.
It doesn’t shy away from the hard facts, especially the criticism of what happened to women after the war ended, with awful public humiliations and rape staining the joy that should’ve come with victory and France’s liberation.
Não ignora os factos difíceis, especialmente quando toca às críticas do que foi feito às mulheres em França depois do fim da guerra, com humilhações públicas horrendas e violações a deixar nódoas na felicidade que devia ter acompanhado a vitória e a libertação da França.
It is painful and eye-opening, even if you do already know about this part of History.
É doloroso de ver e revelador, mesmo que já se conheça bem está parte da História.
Importantly though, it is a great reminder of the suffering endured by the women who came before us and the sacrifices they made for us to have the rights we hold dear now.
Mais importante, este documentário é um óptimo lembrete do sofrimento das mulheres que nos antecederam e dos sacrifícios que fizeram para nós podermos ter os direitos que hoje temos.
It should also be a serious call to action – at least for all of us to vote the next time there is an election.
Também devia ser uma verdadeira chamada à acção – no mínimo para que todas nós votemos da próxima vez que houver uma eleição.
