A weekend break in the age of Covid

Two weeks ago, I took my first post Covid-19 weekend trip. I went to Porto, and it felt so great to wander around a city, taking photos and taking in all the sights.

Há duas semanas, fiz a minha primeira viagem de fim-de-semana pós Covid-19. Fui ao Porto e soube tão bem andar a passear pela cidade, a tirar fotografias e a ver as vistas.

I was a little anxious about being out of the house for a long time, but everything went quite smoothly!

Estava um bocadinho ansiosa por ir estar fora de casa durante tanto tempo, mas correu tudo bem!

Train / Comboio

I took the train from Coimbra to Porto on Saturday morning, and back on Sunday afternoon – everyone must wear a mask while inside, which was a good start.

Apanhei o comboio de Coimbra para o Porto no sábado de manhã e voltei no domingo à tarde – toda a gente tem de usar máscara no interior, o que foi um bom começo.

On my way there, the train car was almost empty, and the safe distances were kept with empty rows and seats between passengers – so it felt very safe.

Na viagem de ida, a carruagem ia quase vazia e as distâncias de segurança eram mantidas com filas e lugares vazios entre os passageiros – muito seguro.

On the way back, though, the train was more crowded. Although I had a corridor and another seat to the person next to me, there was someone in the seat immediately behind, which isn’t 1m away, and definitely felt a little less safe. But masks help and everyone was being respectful!

Já na viagem de regresso, a carruagem vinha bastante mais cheia. Apesar de eu ter um corredor e um lugar vazio entre mim e a pessoa que estava ao meu lado, tinha uma pessoa imediatamente atrás, o que não chega a 1m e não dá tanta sensação de segurança. Mas as máscaras ajudam e toda a gente estava a ser respeitosa.

Hotel

The arrival at the incredible PortoBay Flores, where I spent the night, impressed me for the safety measures in place: a shoe sanitising mat and hand sanitiser as you walk in, separate doors to go in and out with safe distance between them and clear signs pointing them out, and staff always ensuring everything was clean and safe for everyone.

A chegada ao incrível PortoBay Flores, onde passei a noite, impressionou-me por todas as medidas de segurança que tinham sido postas em prática: um tapete de desinfecção de sapatos e gel desinfectante para as mãos à entrada, portas diferentes para entrar e sair com distância segura entre elas e boa sinalização para as indicar, e funcionários sempre a certificar-se que tudo estava limpo e seguro para todos.

All the staff (and guests) wore masks, hand gel was available everywhere in the hotel, and reception even had acrylic panels to protect the staff there, which I thought was great.

Todos os funcionários (e os hóspedes) usavam máscara no interior, gel para as mãos estava disponível por todo o lado no hotel e a recepção até tinha painéis de acrilico para proteger quem está a atender, o que me pareceu óptimo.

Restaurants / Restaurantes

I visited a couple of restaurants during my stay. At the first one, Cantina 32 (which I love!) all sanitary measures were in place (mask wearing, hand and table sanitising). However, I found the tables were still quite close together to be truly safe – I even had to request to sit at a different table, as the one they were going to give me was practically on top of another group. BUT they understood and obliged and aside from that I noticed that cleaning was done carefully to ensure safety.

Fui a dois restaurantes durante a minha estadia. No primeiro, Cantina 32 (que adoro!) todas as medidas de higiene e segurança tinham sido adoptadas (usar máscara, desinfectar mesas e mãos). No entanto achei que as mesas estavam ainda demasiado perto para ser mesmo seguro – até tive de pedir para me sentar numa mesa diferente, já que a que me iam dar ficava quase ao colo de um grupo. MAS perceberam, deram-me uma nova mesa e tirando isso pude ver que a limpeza estava a ser feita com cuidado para garantir segurança.

The second restaurant I visited, Mistu, had visibly more distance between tables – and I arrived early so was able to pick a table where I felt safe when other guests arrived.

O segundo restaurante onde fui, Mistu, tinha as mesas bem mais afastadas – e eu também cheguei cedo por isso pude escolher uma mesa onde estivesse segura quando chegasse mais gente.

Wandering / Passear

Walking around the city was odd – there were not the same numbers of tourists I’ve seen in previous years, but the streets were still busy not everyone was ensuring social distancing or wearing masks (or wearing them properly).

Andar pela cidade foi algo estranho – apesar de não andarem tantos turistas como se via no ano passado ou em anos recentes, as ruas ainda estavam com muita gente e nem todos cumpriam o distanciamento social nem usava máscara (ou não usava em condições).

In crowded areas a mask felt needed for safety – I wore mine and also took detours or crossed the road to keep the distance.

Em zonas mais cheias de gente a máscara pareceu necessária por segurança – eu usei a minha e também me desviei o atravessei a rua para garantir a distância.

Museums / Museus

For guided museum visits – like the Ramos Pinto Wine Cellars and the Palácio da Bolsa – groups are now smaller and mask wearing is required, as well as hand sanitising. At the Palácio da Bolsa they even check your temperature as you go in with a scanner, which felt reassuring.

Para visitas de museus guiadas – como as caves da Ramos Pinto ou o Palácio da Bolsa – os grupos são agora mais pequenos e o uso da máscara é obrigatório, tal como o gel desinfectante das mãos. No Palácio da Bolsa até tiram a temperatura num scanner, o que deu uma boa sensação de segurança.

And for non-guided visits, like the Cathedral, routes are now clearly marked by lines and signs to ensure minimal crossing of paths.

Para visitas não-guiadas, como a da Sé, os percursos estão agora claramente assinalados com linhas e sinais para que as pessoas não se cruzem demasiado.

Overview / No Geral

From my experience, businesses and sights in Porto are taking every precaution to ensure the city remains safe to visit (and to live/work in) – it’s also a lot up to whoever visits to make sure they understand this is a special situation and every precaution should be taken at an individual level too.

Na minha experiência, tanto o comércio como os locais de cultura e turismo no Porto estão a tomar todas as precauções para garantir que continua a ser seguro visitar (e viver/trabalhar) na cidade – também depende muito de quem visita perceber que é uma situação especial e que todas as precauções devem ser tomadas a nível individual também.
