I was 12/13 when I said to my parents that I wanted to live in London one day. The immediate response I got was Mum telling me “study hard and you will”. Which I did (more on that in this post)!
In today’s post I want to share some good, bad and ugly parts of living abroad, based on my own experience. Hope you like it!
Tinha 12 ou 13 anos quando disse pela primeira vez aos meus Pais que gostava de viver em Londres um dia. A resposta da minha Mãe foi logo “estuda e logo vais”. E foi o que fiz (podem saber mais neste post).
No post de hoje quis partilhar o bom, o mau e o pior de viver no estrangeiro, com base na minha experiência (claro!). Espero que gostem!
The good
For me, the best part about living abroad is, by far, being exposed to a different culture, and different ways of doing all things from working to cooking.
Not only that but, in the UK, I have been so lucky to meet people from all kinds of backgrounds, with different habits and values to mine – and that is learning that has no price!
Thanks to these things, I can safely say that living abroad makes you a more aware, more open person!
Living abroad has also meant access to culture I would not have been able to access at home. From incredible museums & exhibitions to theatre, musicals and concerts, it’s all there to be enjoyed – and it has contributed to make me a more informed, cultured person.
Even food is something amazing about living abroad: there were so many cuisines I’d never had the chance to try before I moved to the UK!
Para mim, a melhor parte de viver fora é, de longe, o estar exposta a uma cultura diferente, e a formas diferentes de fazer as coisas, do trabalhar ao cozinhar.
Não só isso, mas no Reino Unido tenho tido imensa sorte de conhecer pessoas de todo o tipo de origens, com hábitos e valores diferentes dos meus – é uma aprendizagem que não tem preço!
Graças a estas coisas, posso dizer com alguma confiança que viver no estrangeiro nos torna pessoas mais abertas e conscientes!
Viver fora também me proporcionou acesso a cultura que não poderia ter acedido em Portugal. Desde museus e exposições incríveis, a teatro, musicais e concertos, está lá tudo para ser usufruído – e contribuiu para me tornar numa pessoa mais informada e mais culta.
Até a comida é uma coisa boa de se viver fora: existem tantas cozinhas que nunca tinha experimentado antes de chegar ao Reino Unido!
The bad
It’s not easy to live away from home if you are close to your family there and love your home country. I’ve always felt like a piece of me was always still in Portugal.
But then when I moved back in 2014, another piece of me stayed in London! What was that about?! I thought all I wanted was to be home. But it turns out, after so many years, London is home too.
Living abroad is, I think, all about having roots as well as branches – and finding the right balance for you, between visits and the use of technology.
Não é fácil viver fora de casa quando somos próximos da família e gostamos do nosso país. Sempre senti que parte de mim ainda estava em Portugal.
Mas depois quando voltei em 2014, outra parte ficou em Londres! Como raio?! Eu pensava que só queria estar em casa. Mas afinal, depois de tantos anos, Londres também é casa.
Viver fora é, acho eu, ter ramos para além de raízes – e encontrar o nosso equilíbrio, entre visitas e o uso da tecnologia.
The ugly
Bureaucracy follows you no matter where you move – and it will always be a pain in the butt. Between banks, and bills and house renting, it’s all a challenge.
But then it’s a challenge that will teach you a whole collection of skills you will be able to use in other situations!
A burocracia está por todo o lado – e vai ser sempre uma seca. Entre bancos e contas e alugar casa, é tudo um desafio.
Mas por outro lado é um desafio que nos ensina todo um conjunto de capacidades que podemos depois usar noutras situações!
