The beginning of the year is usually the time when lots of great movies come out – and to narrow down the list of stuff to see, over the past few years I’ve created a little tradition for myself. That tradition involves watching all the movies nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.
O começo do ano é normalmente a altura em que saem todos os bons filmes – e para reduzir a lista dos filmes para ver, nos últimos anos criei uma tradição para mim mesma. É a tradição de ver todos os filmes nomeados para o Oscar de Melhor Filme.
Now let me just say that I don’t think the Oscars are the be all, end all of cinema – far from it. They are not reflective of the best cinema that is out there, and often leave out diverse and creative stories that are so deserving of praise.
Quero começar por dizer que não acho que os Óscares determinem o que é bom cinema – longe disso. Não reflectem o melhor cinema que se faz por aí e deixam muitas vezes de fora histórias criativas e com diversidade que merecem tanto ser celebradas.
This year in particular I’m frankly quite shocked because, yet again, we see a Best Picture nominee where the director is a woman – who has not been nominated for Best Director. How can it be that it is one of the best movies, but the director is not one of the best? It baffles me.
Este ano em particular estou chocada porque, mais uma vez, vemos uma nomeação para Melhor Filme com uma Realizadora mulher – que não foi por seu turno nomeada para o galardão de Melhor Realizador. Como é que pode ser um dos melhores filmes, sem a realizadora ser uma das melhores? Fico pasma.
