Recently I’ve been enjoying talking more about the books I’ve read – as we move to the colder months, reading takes up a bigger chunk of my free space, so there is lots to talk about!
Ultimamente tenho gostado de falar mais sobre os livros que tenho lido – enquanto nos aproximamos dos meses mais frios, passo mais tempo a ler, por isso há muito para falar!
Serpent & Dove
A brilliant debut novel that combines magic, adventure and romance.
When Lou and Reid first meet they’re on opposite sides of the society they live in: Lou being a witch, and Reid being part of the force that is tasked to hunt and kill them. What starts off as a marriage of convenience quickly evolves and takes both characters on a real journey.
The story is told from Lou and Reid’s perspectives, switching between them through the chapters. The way their perspectives and beliefs start to soften and change as the story goes on is beautifully done.
It is a very original take on magic, and I loved the touch of “Frenchness” in their expressions. Lou is a truly badass witch and I felt myself feeling moved by her determination. The only bad thing about this book? Having to wait a whole year for the sequel!!
Um romance de estreia óptimo que junta magia, aventura e romance.
Quando Lou e Reid se conhecem, estão em lados opostos da sociedade onde vivem: a Lou é uma feiticeira, e o Reid trabalha como Chasseur, caçador de feiticeiras. O que começa por ser um casamento de conveniência rapidamente evolui e leva os dois personagens numa verdadeira viagem.
A história é contada variando com os capítulos, entre a perspectiva da Lou e a do Reid. A forma como as suas formas de ver vão suavizando e mudando com o evoluir da história está super bem feita.
É uma maneira super original de escrever sobre magia, e o toque Francês das expressões usadas cai ali muito bem. A Lou é uma feiticeira sem medos e eu dei por mim a sentir-me emocionada pela sua determinação. A única coisa má deste livro? Ter de esperar um ano inteiro pela sequela!!
The Fountains of Silence
A fantastic Historical Fiction novel that really makes you think about the horrible things that happen during dictatorships.
As Franco’s Spain begins to open itself to allow foreign investment, eighteen year old Daniel Matheson finds himself in Madrid with his parents. His love of photography connects him to Ana, whose family struggles with the aftermath of the civil war and the oppressing weight of the regime.
Through Daniel, Ana, and a variety of other complex and well developed characters, the book highlights the heartbreak and horror that Spain went through during the 40 years of Franco’s rule, and the culture of fear and silence it generated.
The power of historical fiction, beautifully delivered by this book, is that it generates that curiosity to learn more about the facts – and that is super important.
Um romance histórico fantástico que nos faz pensar nos horrores que se vivem durante ditaduras.
Quando a Espanha de Franco começa a dar espaço ao investimento estrangeiro, o jovem Daniel Matheson, de 18 anos, encontra-se em Madrid com os pais. Através da paixão pela fotografia cria uma ligação com Ana, cuja família sofre as dificuldades do pós-Guerra Civil, bem como a opressão do regime.
Através de Daniel, Ana e de uma variedade de personagens muito bem escritos e desenvolvidos, o livro destaca a tristeza e o horror que a Espanha viveu durante os 40 anos do Franquismo, bem como a cultura de silêncio e medo que o regime gerou.
O poder da ficção histórica, lindamente demonstrado por este livro, é que gera aquela curiosidade para ir aprender mais sobre o que realmente aconteceu – e isso é super importante.
The Giver of Stars
When Alice married Bennet and thought of moving to America, she imagined a glamorous life in a big city. Instead she found herself in Kentucky. It is there that she impulsively volunteers to help run a travelling library.
Working at the library causes all kinds of trouble, but also introduces Alice to Margery, the feisty, no nonsense leader of the packhorse librarians; Beth, the foul-mouthed girl with four older brothers and a quick temper and Izzy, the shy girl who sings like an angel.
The book describes life in a small village in the Southern states of the US in the 30s extremely well, especially the shocking treatment of women and minorities. It also gives a lifelike description of the rugged beauty of the mountains, making you feel like you’re almost touching the snow.
I loved how the author describes the librarians and sets out their evolution as the women grow into their own, and at the same time become friends and transform into a team. I also loved the male characters of Sven and Fred, both so lovely and strong at the same time.
Quando Alice se casou com Bennet e pensou em mudar-se para os Estados Unidos, imaginou a sua vida numa grande cidade. No entanto, acabou a viver numa pequena vila no Kentucky rural. É lá que, impulsivamente, se oferece como voluntária para ajudar a biblioteca viajante.
Trabalhar na biblioteca causa toda uma série de problemas, mas também permite que Alice conheça Margery, a destemida líder das packhorse librarians; Beth, a maria-rapaz com 4 irmãos e sem filtro e Izzy, a rapariga tímida que canta com voz de anjo.
O livro descreve a vida numa pequena vila do Kentucky nos anos 30 muitíssimo bem, especialmente o tratamento chocante das mulheres e das minorias. Também faz uma descrição incrível das paisagens da montanha, parecendo até que estamos a tocar na neve.
Adoro a forma como a autora descreve as bibliotecárias e estabelece a sua evolução à medida em que se tornam mais confiantes, ficam amigas e se transformam numa equipa. Também adorei os personagens masculinos Sven e Fred, ambos tão queridos e tão fortes ao mesmo tempo.
