One of the travel traditions I most enjoy, I copied from my dad: buying a book in each city I visit – preferably set in that city.

This has allowed me to extend the joys of exploring a new city, by getting in lost in it by way of a great story.
Este hábito tem-me permitido prolongar o prazer de explorar uma cidade, ao perder-me depois nela por meio de uma boa história.
Today I thought I’d share my favourite books & cities combinations…
Hoje pensei partilhar convosco as minhas combinações preferidas de livros e cidades…
New York – Lilian Boxfish Takes a Walk
In this brilliant novel, the main character, an 80-something year old lady, takes a walk through the streets of Manhattan on New Year’s Eve in 1984. While doing so she meets different characters, and she also takes the reader through the events of her life. It’s enchanting – and it’s great to read once you have had a chance to roam those streets yourself, because you almost see them as she walks.
Neste romance brilhante, a personagem principal, uma senhora na casa dos 80 anos, caminha pelas ruas de Manhattan na Passagem de Ano em 1984. Enquanto o faz, vai-se cruzando com vários personagens e guiando o leitor sobre os acontecimentos da sua vida. O livro é encantador e é óptimo de ler se já tiverem passeado por aquelas ruas, porque quase que se vêem ao ler.
Lisbon – Os Maias
This masterpiece of Portuguese literature tells the saga of the Maia family, and it involves everything from social critic (which remains relevant almost 200 years later), romance, comedy and tragedy. A lot of the action is set around the Baixa area of Lisbon, in Chiado in particular. It’s a classic and a joy to read!
Esta obra prima da literatura Portuguesa conta a saga da família Maia, e inclui tudo desde crítica social (que ainda se mantém relevante, tantos anos depois), romance, comédia e tragédia. Boa parte da história passa-se na zona da Baixa, especialmente no Chiado. É um clássico e uma leitura óptima!
Madrid – Fuimos Canciones & Seremos Recuerdos
These two books follow the lives of a group of friends in their late 20s living in Madrid. In their struggles with work, life and love, it’s so easy to see those of so many women in the same age group. On top of that, the books capture the spirit of Madrid, and the social habits of its inhabitants, beautifully!
Estes dois livros seguem as vidas de um grupo de amigas dos seus 20/30 anos a viver em Madrid. Nos problemas delas com o trabalho, a vida em geral e o amor em particular, é tão fácil ver os de tantas mulheres nessas idades. Para além disso, captam o espírito madrileno e os hábitos sociais dos seus habitantes lindamente!
Barcelona – Marina
This is a story filled with fantasy and adventure, in the Barcelona of the 80s. I read it right after coming back and walking those charming streets along with the characters was a great way to end a lovely trip! Of course you can’t talk about Barcelona, or Carlos Ruiz Zafón, without talking about The Shadow of the Wind – a book I read ages ago, but still remember as one of the best I’ve read!
Esta é uma história repleta de fantasia e aventura, passada na Barcelona dos anos 80. Li este livro depois de voltar de Barcelona e poder rever aquelas ruas através dos personagens do livro foi uma óptima forma de acabar a viagem! Claro que não se pode falar de Barcelona, nem de Carlos Ruiz Zafón sem falar de A Sombra do Vento – que já li há imenso tempo mas ainda tenho como dos melhores livros que li!
Paris – The Nightingale
This is one of my favourite discoveries of recent years. It follows two sisters and shows in harrowing detail the horrors endured by the women in occupied France during World War II. As the story goes back to Paris during the occupation, through the adventures of the characters, the reader gets a vivid image of what life must have been at the time. Fascinating in many ways, and fantastically written.
Este livro é das minhas descobertas favoritas dos últimos anos. Segue duas irmãs e mostra com detalhe angustiante os horrores passados pelas mulheres na França ocupada durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Quando a história volta a Paris durante a ocupação, através das aventuras das personagens, o leitor tem uma imagem nítida do que seria a vida em Paris naquela altura. Fascinante de várias formas e muitíssimo bem escrito.
