Porto City Guide

At the end of last week, I headed to Porto with my parents for two days of exploring this beautiful city in the North of Portugal.

No final da semana passada, os meus Pais e eu fomos ao Porto passar dois dias para explorar esta cidade linda do Norte de Portugal.

Porto is Portugal’s second biggest city, and it has a great cultural offering, as well as great places to eat, drink and just wander. Here’s what to do in two days.

O Porto é a segunda maior cidade do país e tem uma enorme oferta cultural, para além de óptimos sítios para comer, beber e passear. Aqui ficam sugestões para dois dias.

Palácio da Bolsa

The former chamber of commerce in Porto is a stunning building full of incredible details. It’s worth visiting for the entry hall alone – the tiles and glass ceiling are a wonderful combination.

O edifício da antiga câmara do Comércio do Porto é impressionante e está cheio de detalhes lindos. Vale a pena visitar só pela sala de entrada – a combinação dos azulejos com a cúpula de vidro é incrível.

Livraria Lello

Not only is this a great bookshop, with lovely staff who can help you find any book you’re after, but it’s also, by far, the prettiest bookshop in the world – especially thanks to be beautiful red staircase!

Não só é uma livraria óptima, com funcionários super simpáticos que podem ajudar a encontrar qualquer livro, mas também é, de longe, a livraria mais bonita do mundo – especialmente graças à lindíssima escada vermelha!

Ramos Pinto Port Cellar

Crossing the lower platform of the Luis I Bridge you will come to Cais de Gaia, where you will find several Port Wine cellars & museums – a guided tour of them will usually include a wine tasting at the end, which I highly recommend! My favourite is Ramos Pinto – not only are the wines divine, but the History of the company is so interesting! The founding brothers were absolute marketing geniuses who created beautiful posters which also got people talking in a super conservative society – well ahead of their time! Plus if you’re a fan of ‘FRIENDS’ you might just recognise their most famous poster…

Atravessando a plataforma inferior da Ponte Luís I chega-se ao Cais de Gaia, onde é possível encontrar várias Caves de Vinho do Porto e os seus museums – uma visita guiada costuma incluir a prova de vinhos no final, que eu recomendo vivamente! A minha preferida é a Ramos Pinto, não só porque os vinhos são divinais, mas também porque a História da empresa é fascinante! Os irmãos que fundaram a Ramos Pinto eram verdadeiros génios do marketing, criando cartazes lindíssimos que ao mesmo tempo davam que falar numa sociedade altamente conservadora – muito à frente do seu tempo! Para além do mais, se forem fãs da série ‘FRIENDS’, talvez reconheçam o poster mais famoso da marca…

Old Town Porto

Between the Sé and the Ribeira areas, you will find the charming streets of the old town. I loved getting lost in these streets, so full of colour and pretty plants!

Entre a Sé e a Ribeira, encontram-se as ruas encantadoras do Porto Antigo. Adorei perder-me por estas ruas, tão coloridas e cheias de plantas!

Ribeira

In Ribeira you will see pretty waterfront buildings, tons of restaurants and souvenir shops and, my personal favourite, the Ribeira square. It’s always beautiful, but especially so in the morning light.

Na Ribeira encontram-se edifícios bonitos, imensos restaurantes e lojas de souvenirs e, a minha preferida, a Praça da Ribeira. Sempre bonita, mas especialmente à luz da manhã.

Clérigos

This impressive tower stands tall in the Porto skyline and is one of the cities main symbols. You can even visit inside and climb to the top too!

Esta torre impressionante destaca-se na vista do Porto e é um dos símbolos da cidade. Até se pode visitar o interior e subir à Torre!

Blue & White Tiles

Porto is associated with blue and white tiles in beautiful motifs. From church façades such as Igreja do Carmo, to the inimitable São Bento Station, these are well worth visiting.

O Porto está associado a azulejos azuis e brancos com motivos lindos. Desde fachadas de igrejas como a do Carmo, à inimitável Estação de São Bento, valem bem a pena visitar.

Rua das Flores

Full of beautiful stores and great restaurants, this is one of the best streets in Porto for a wander!

Cheia de lojas lindas e óptimos restaurantes, esta é uma das melhores ruas no Porto para passear!

Where to Stay

We stayed at Malmerendas Boutique Lodging – and it was great! Not only is it perfectly located for a city break, but the staff is super nice and helpful, and the rooms so comfy. We stayed at the garden studio – perfect for 3 people as it has a double bed and, in a separate room, a sofa bed too.

Ficámos no Malmerendas Boutique Lodging e foi óptimo! Não só tem uma localização perfeita para explorar a cidade, mas os funcionários são super simpáticos e prestáveis, e os quartos são tão confortáveis! Ficámos no Garden Studio – perfeito para 3 pessoas já que tem uma cama de casal e, numa outra divisão, também tem um sofá cama.

Where to eat

Cantinho do Avillez is a favourite, the service is great and the food is delicious, always.

O Cantinho do Avillez é um favorito nosso, com óptimo serviço e comida sempre deliciosa.

The hotel staff recommended Rogério do Redondo for dinner – a traditional restaurant a little removed from the touristy centre that has the most delicious food and excellent service.

No hotel recomendaram-nos o Rogério do Redondo para jantar – um restaurante tradicional fora da zona mais turística que tem a melhor comida e um atendimento excelente.

Finally we tried Cantina 32 and were so impressed! Not only is the space super cool, but the food was divine. I mean they make banana butter – what’s not to love?! For this one it’s best to book in advance!

Finalmente experimentámos o restaurante Cantina 32 e ficámos impressionados! Não só tem um espaço giríssimo, mas a comida era divinal. Até fazem manteiga de banana – como é possível não gostar?! Convém marcar com antecedência!
