Best of Porto: Livraria Lello

One of my favourite things about Porto is that it is home to the most beautiful bookstore I’ve ever visited, Lello.

Uma das minhas coisas preferidas no Porto é a livraria mais bonita que alguma vez visitei, a Lello.

Harry Potter connections

With a History dating back to the 19th Century, this stunning store has gained new popularity thanks to a rumoured connection to Harry Potter. It’s said JK Rowling was a customer in her time living in Porto, and Potterheads around the world have pointed out the similarities between Lello and the Wizarding World – like the Flourish and Botts bookshop in Diagon Alley or the staircases in Hogwarts.

Com uma História que data do século XIX, esta loja lindíssima ganhou uma nova popularidade graças a uma suposta ligação com a saga Harry Potter. Diz-se que JK Rowling era cliente da Lello quando vivia no Porto e os Potterheads pelo mundo vêm notando as semelhanças entre a Lello e o mundo do pequeno feiticeiro – como a livraria Flourish and Botts na Diagon Alley ou as escadarias de Hogwarts.

Origins

Lello’s History started in 1881 when José Lello – a man with a great passion for culture, particularly for books and music – and his brother António founded Lello & Irmão.

A História da Lello remonta a 1881 quando José Lello – um homem com uma grande paixão pela cultura, especialmente por livros e música – e o seu irmão António fundaram a Lello & Irmão.

Years later, the brothers acquired another bookstore, Chardron, and its entire collection. Chardron had been famous for publishing first editions of great Portuguese authors such as Eça de Queiroz or Camilo Castelo-Branco.

Anos mais tarde, os irmãos adquiriram uma outra livraria, a Chardron, e todo o seu espólio. A Chardron tinha já publicado primeiras edições de livros de grandes autores Portugueses como Eça de Queiroz ou Camilo Castelo-Branco.

You can still see the name of both Lello & Irmão and Chardron in the façade to this day.

Os nomes das duas livrarias, Lello & Irmão e Chardron, ainda podem ser vistos na fachada actual.

The building that currently houses Lello was inaugurated in 1906 – with the biggest names of Portuguese culture at the time in attendance.

O edifício onde fica actualmente a Livraria Lello foi inaugurado em 1906 – com a presença dos maiores nomes da cultura Portuguesa da altura.

Building

Local engineer Xavier Esteves designed the building, including in it elements of his own love for literature.

Xavier Esteves, um engenheiro local, desenhou e construiu o edifício, incluindo nele elementos do seu próprio amor pela literatura.

The beautiful façade follows the neo-gothic style, and it has two images showing art and science on each side of the main window.

A fachada lindíssima segue o estilo neo-gótico e nela podemos ver duas imagens, a arte e a ciência, de cada lado da janela principal.

Inside, though, you’ll see elements of Art Nouveau (the impressive glasswork ceiling) and Art Deco, with the beautiful bas-relief flowers in the columns upstairs, and the images of the Lello brothers downstairs.

Já no interior podemos ver elementos de Art Nouveau (o impressionante tecto em vitral) e Art Deco, com os baixos relevos de flores nas colunas do andar de cima, e dos irmãos Lello no andar de baixo.

Possibly the most well-known detail within Lello is the red staircase. It looks effortless and beautiful, and makes visitors want to head upstairs to see more of this beautiful space!

Talvez o aspecto mais conhecido da Lello seja a escadaria vermelha. Parece tão simples e bonita, e dá aos visitantes vontade de subir para conhecer mais deste espaço tão bonito!

Bookstore for the XXI Century

I love a good bookstore and this one is definitely one of the best. The staff is super nice and helpful – and their in-house editions, which exist in both English and Portuguese, are just beautiful!

Adoro uma boa livraria e esta é sem dúvida uma das melhores. Não só tem funcionários super simpáticos e prestáveis, como as edições da casa, que existem em Português e Inglês – são incríveis!
