Portugal Top 10 for Portugal Day

On the 10th June, Portugal celebrates its National Day. It celebrates the country and the Portuguese communities around the world. It has gained more and more importance for me personally as I’ve been away.

No dia 10 de Junho, celebramos o Dia de Portugal. Celebramos o país e as comunidades Portuguesas pelo mundo. Desde que estou fora, este dia tem ganho mais e mais importância para mim.

For that reason, I wanted to share some of my favourite things and places, that you may not already have heard of.

Por isso, quis partilhar aqui algumas das minhas coisas e os meus sítios preferidos em Portugal.

Biblioteca Joanina

In one of the oldest universities in the World, the University of Coimbra, which dates back to the 13th Century, is the magnificent Biblioteca Joanina. It’s beautiful, super detailed and in it you can find some of the oldest books in Portugal. To add to that, it was also the inspiration behind the library in the Disney live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson.

Numa das mais antigas universidades do Mundo, a Universidade de Coimbra, que data do século XIII, fica a magnífica Biblioteca Joanina. É lindíssima, super detalhada e nela se encontram alguns dos livros mais antigos em Portugal. Para além disso, serviu de inspiração para a biblioteca do mais recente filme A Bela e o Monstro da Disney, com a Emma Watson.

Ovos Moles

You may have heard about custard tarts, but there are so many more traditional Portuguese sweet treats! Ovos Moles are my absolute favourites – a sweet cream made out of egg yolk and sugar, with an outer layer of ultra thin wafer, in different, delicious shapes. They’re traditionally from Aveiro, a beautiful city towards the North of Portugal.

Portugal tem tantos doces para além dos famosos pastéis de nata! Os ovos moles são os meus preferidos de todos – um creme à base de gema de ovo e açúcar, coberto por uma hóstia super fina, apresentado em várias formas deliciosas. São tradicionais de Aveiro e são de comer e chorar por mais.

Ouro de Viana

The North of Portugal is famous for its artisans. None do more impressive work than the jewellery artists that create the filigree. This is a very detailed way of working the metal to create beautiful shapes, traditional to the Minho region and Viana do Castelo in particular.

O Norte de Portugal é famoso pelos seus artesãos. Nenhuns fazem um trabalho mais impressionante do que os joalheiros que criam a filigrana. As peças de ouro tradicionais do Minho e de Viana do Castelo em particular são sempre impressionantes.

Tavira

This town in the Algarve is often overlooked by tourists but it is one of the most charming – and around it are the most beautiful beaches! Nearby Santa Luzia has some of the best fish and seafood restaurants I’ve ever been to and they have the freshest, nicest octopus salad – the perfect dish for a Summer lunch. And Praia do Barril, where I spent my Summers as a teenager, is still my favourite!

Tavira é uma das cidades mais bonitas em Portugal – o centro é lindo e à sua volta tem praias incríveis! Santa Luzia, que fica muito perto, tem alguns dos melhores restaurantes de peixe e marisco a que já fui e também a melhor e mais fresca salada de polvo – o almoço perfeito para o Verão. E a Praia do Barril, onde passei os meus Verões enquanto adolescente, continua a ser a minha preferida!

Palácio da Ajuda

In one of the hills of Lisbon is the beautiful Palácio da Ajuda. It was home to the royal family after the 1755 earthquake devastated downtown Lisbon, and the plans were for it to rival Versailles in size and opulence. This didn’t quite happen and you can still see where construction stopped if you go past the side of the building. There are some fascinating rooms in this palace, full of beautiful details and colour. It really is magnificent!

Numa das colinas de Lisboa fica o Palácio da Ajuda. Foi a casa da família real depois do terramoto de 1755 ter destruído a baixa de Lisboa e o plano era rivalizar com Versailles em tamanho e opulência. A coisa não se passou exactamente assim e ainda podemos ver onde a construção parou quando se passa ao lado do edifício. O palácio tem salas fascinantes, cheias de detalhes lindos e cheias de cor. É realmente magnífico!

Vinho do Porto

Port wine is by far my favourite. Whether it’s the rich and sweet taste of a Tawny (aged in oak wood) or a Ruby (aged in bottle); or the sweet but crisp taste of White, Port is just delightful! Try a Port Tonic: to a large wine glass add some white port (my favourite is Lágrima by Ramos Pinto), tonic water, lemon peel and ice. It is the perfect summer drink. And if you’re ever in Porto, definitely cross the river to visit the Port Wine cellars – it’s incredible to explore the rich history surrounding these family brands, and you get to try the wines at the end!

O vinho do Porto é de longe o meu preferido. Seja o sabor rico e doce de um Tawny ou de um Ruby; ou o sabor mais fresco de um Branco, o vinho do Porto é sempre uma delícia! Experimentem um Porto Tónico: num copo grande de vinho adicionem um pouco de vinho do Porto branco (o meu preferido é o Lágrima da Ramos Pinto), água tónica, casca de limão e gelo. É a bebida perfeita para o Verão. E se forem ao Porto, não se esqueçam de atravessar o rio e visitar as caves – é incrível aprender sobre a história destas marcas familiares e ainda por cima podemos experimentar os vinhos no final!

Manuelino

The Manuelino is a very Portuguese style of architecture and ornamentation originating in the 16th Century. This late Gothic style can be found in work’s commissioned by King Manuel I, and it incorporates maritime elements, inspired by the Portuguese Discoveries across the globe. The most famous examples of this detailed style can be found at Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon, Sintra National Palace or Batalha Monastery. The colourful and famous Palácio da Pena also features Manuelino details, but from the revival period in the 19th Century.

O estilo Manuelino marcou a arquitectura Portuguesa do século XVI. Este estilo pode ser admirado em obras encomendadas por D. Manuel I e inclui elementos marítimos inspirados pelos Descobrimentos. Os melhores exemplos estão no Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, no Palácio da Cidade em Sintra ou no Mosteiro da Batalha. Já o Palácio da Pena inclui detalhes do Neo-Manuelino, do século XIX.

Queijo da Serra

If you like cheese, Portugal has several delicious ones for you. Perhaps the most famous among them is the Queijo da Serra, made from sheep’s milk and hailing from the Serra da Estrela region. There are different types of this cheese, from amanteigado (soft and smooth) to curado (hard and with a deeper taste). Try a sandwich of delicious presunto and amanteigado which is always delicious!

Portugal tem queijos incríveis de norte a sul. Mas talvez o mais famoso seja o Queijo da Serra, feito de leite de ovelha na região da Serra da Estrela. Há diferentes tipos de Queijo da Serra, do amanteigado (macio e suave) ao curado (duro e com um sabor mais forte). Uma sandes de presunto com queijo da serra amanteigado fica sempre uma delícia!

Bordallo Pinheiro

Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro was an artist of caricatures, humorous illustrations and ceramics. The ceramics brand he started in the town of Caldas da Rainha is famous the world over. It has some seriously original pieces, ranging from fruits and animals to popular characters such as Zé Povinho.

Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro foi um artista das ilustrações humorísticas, das caricaturas e da cerâmica. A marca de cerâmica que fundou nas Caldas da Rainha é famosa pelo Mundo fora. Tem peças super originais, desde frutas e animais a personagens da cultura popular como o Zé Povinho.

Pastéis de Tentúgal

A lot of Portuguese traditional desserts hail from convents and were originally baked by nuns – the divine (see what I did there?) Pastéis de Tentúgal are no different. Made from super thin puff pastry and an incredible egg yolk cream, they were first created at the Tentugal Carmelite Convent. They are some of the best (and yet for the most part still largely unknown) sweets in Portugal!

Muitos dos doces tradicionais Portugueses foram criados em conventos e originalmente confecionados por freiras – os divinais (vêm o que fiz aqui?) Pastéis de Tentúgal não fogem à regra. Feitos com massa folhada super fina e um creme de gema de ovo, os pastéis surgem no Carmelo de Tentúgal. São dos melhores (e no entanto ainda muito desconhecidos) doces de Portugal!
