20 years of ‘10 Things I Hate About You’

In 1999, 15 year old Teresa headed to the video store to rent a movie to watch on a lazy day of Summer Holidays. That film was ’10 Things I Hate About You’ – released over 20 years ago, on the 31st March 1999, and starring Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Larisa Oleynik and a very baby faced Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Em 1999, a Teresa de 15 anos foi ao clube de vídeo alugar um filme para ver numa tarde de preguiça das Férias de Verão. Esse filme era o ’10 Things I Hate About You’ – que estreou há 20 anos, no dia 31 de Março de 1999, com Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Larisa Oleynik e um Joseph Gordon-Levitt com uma carinha de bebé.

It was a game changer for me. I wanted to be like Kat so much that I had my ears pierced a second time and wore two silver hoops on each ear like she did. I also bought, and tried to read, The Feminine Mystique – I didn’t get very far, though, the English was complex and I was just 15 after all. But 10 Things through Kat did open my mind to Feminism, for which I’m still thankful.

Foi um daqueles filmes que marcou imenso a minha vida. Queria tanto ser como a Kat que fiz um segundo furo nas orelhas e andei com duas argolas de prata como as dela. Também comprei, e tentei ler, o livro The Feminine Mystique – não cheguei muito longe, o inglês era demasiado complexo e eu só tinha 15 anos. Mas foi através do ’10 Things’ e da Kat que comecei a prestar mais atenção ao Feminismo e por isso ainda estou muito grata.

There’s just so much to love about this film!

Há tanto para gostar neste filme!

The soundtrack – which features great 90s songs (Sister Hazel’s Your Winter will always have a special place in my heart) as well as interpretations of rock classics like Letters to Cleo’s versions of I Want You To Want Me and Cruel to be Kind – is fantastic. It’s one of those soundtracks I could listen to over and over again back then – and just as easily now.

A banda sonora – que inclui músicas óptimas dos anos 90 (Your Winter dos Sister Hazel vai ser sempre super especial para mim) bem como interpretações de clássicos do rock como as versões de I Want You To Want Me e de Cruel to be Kind por Letters to Cleo – é fantástica. É uma daquelas bandas sonoras que ouvia vezes sem conta na altura – e que ouço com igual facilidade agora.

There is also Heath Ledger playing a brooding, charming, mysterious Patrick Verona – who won me over the first time he winked at Ms Perky.

Depois tem o Heath Ledger no papel de Patrick Verona, um rapaz misterioso e cheio de pinta – que me conquistou com o primeiro piscar de olho à Ms Perky.

Finally, but more importantly, there are some brilliant one liners – and I have to thank my best friend A for her suggestion of writing a post about the best lines from this iconic movie. Here we go…

Patrick: Don’t let anyone, ever, make you feel like you don’t deserve what you want. Go for it!

How amazing is it to have this line be said between two boys in a 90s teen rom-com? It’s the pep-talk everyone needs! I was so inspired by this line, and still go back to it when I need a confidence boost.

Não é incrível esta frase ser trocada entre dois rapazes numa comédia romântica de adolescentes dos anos 90? É o discurso motivador de que toda a gente precisa! Senti-me tão inspirada por esta frase – e ainda volto a ela sempre que preciso de um aumento de confiança!

Cameron: We’re Screwed.

Michael: No, Hey, Hey, No, I don’t want to hear that defeatist attitude. I want to see you upbeat.

Cameron: (cheerfully) We’re Screwed!!

There’s nothing like this sentence to put things in perspective when you feel pessimistic about something happening in your life! Whenever that happens to me, I envision this scene and immediately my mood lightens and I feel more capable.

Não há nada como esta cena para por as coisas em perspectiva quando nos sentimos pessimistas sobre qualquer coisa que esteja a acontecer na nossa vida! Sempre que me sinto mais negativa, visualizo esta cena e sinto-me imediatamente mais leve e mais capaz.

Patrick: You may not be afraid of me, but I’m sure you’ve thought of me naked, huh?

Kat: (sarcastically) Am I that transparent? I want you. I need you. Oh baby, Oh baby.

In the 90s this was the epitome of cool for me. A girl saying to a guy’s face that she really did not think about him. Strength and confidence by the bucket load. I’ve always wanted to use it in real life!

Nos anos 90, isto era o auge para mim. Uma rapariga a dizer na cara de um rapaz que não pensava nele de todo. Cântaros de força e confiança. Sempre quis usar esta frase na vida real!

Kat:  I guess in this society, being male and an asshole makes you worthy of our time.

20 years and that still applies. Says a lot doesn’t it?

20 anos depois e ainda se aplica. Diz muito, não diz?

Kat: You don’t always have to be who they want you to be, you know.

This is the key thing about Kat – she is strong, and fearless and she does things for her own reasons, not anyone else’s. It was something I tried to live by through high school and university, and still do today – with mixed results, but it’s a process!

Este é o ponto chave da Kat – é forte, é destemida e faz coisas pelas suas próprias razões e não pelas dos outros. Foi uma regra pela qual me tentei guiar no liceu, na faculdade e até hoje – com resultados variados, mas é uma aprendizagem!

Kat: But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.

Being honest with yourself also means acknowledging your feelings and Kat does that so well in that famous scene reading the poem to Patrick. Being strong doesn’t mean you can’t be vulnerable – life is about all those feelings.

Ser honesta consigo mesma também significa reconhecer os seus sentimentos e a Kat faz isso tão bem na famosa cena em que lê o poema ao Patrick. Ser forte não quer dizer que não se possa ser vulnerável – a vida é feita de todos os sentimentos.
