French Favourites

I’ve had to rewrite this intro a little bit…this Saturday I was meant to be heading over to Paris and I was so excited! But with strikes on the Paris end, Eurostar recommended I postponed the trip and that’s what I did – I’ll be going at the end of May instead. But I had been excited to share my favourite films, books and TV shows that are either French or set in France – so I’ll do just that, even though the trip will need to wait…

Mas com greves do lado de Paris, o Eurostar recomendou que mudasse a viagem e foi o que fiz – vou no final de Maio. Mas queria muito partilhar convosco os meus filmes, livros e séries de televisão que são ou franceses/as ou se passam em França – e é o que vou fazer, mesmo que a viagem tenha de esperar…

Film

L’Auberge Espagnole Trilogy

From director Cédric Klapisch, these three films follow Xavier through three very different decades of his life. As he goes from Paris to Barcelona for an Erasmus year (20s); as he starts his career and family between London and Paris (30s) and finally as he settles into his own skin and life and realises what is truly important (40s). I absolutely love these films. They bring back very special memories and always make me reflect on my life – what it’s been so far and what I want it to be.

Estes três filmes do realizador Cédric Klapisch seguem o personagem principal, Xavier, ao longo de décadas diferentes da sua vida. Quando vai de Paris para Barcelona fazer Erasmus (os 20); quando começa a carreira e a família entre Londres e Paris (nos 30) e finalmente quando assenta na sua própria pele e na sua vida e percebe o que é verdadeiramente importante (nos 40). Adoro estes filmes. Trazem-me recordações muito especiais e fazem-me sempre pensar na minha própria vida – o que tem sido até agora e o que quero que seja.

Qu’est-ce qu’on a fait au Bon Dieu?

A classic French comedy about a Catholic couple who see their lives turned upside down when their four daughters marry four men of different religions and backgrounds. The actors are sublime and the way the story develops turns out to be hilarious and with a positive message of respect and tolerance.

Uma comédia francesa clássica sobre um casal Católico que vê a vida do avesso quando as suas quatro filhas se casam com quatro homens de religiões e culturas diferentes. Os actores são sublimes e a forma como a história se desenvolve acaba por ser muito engraçada e com uma mensagem positiva de respeito e tolerância.

I love books set in France – recently I’ve read two that really stuck with me.

Adoro livros que sejam passados em França – recentemente li dois que adorei.

Un Appartement à Paris

This thriller by Guillaume Musso is really addictive and has you gripped from the start. It follows the two main characters as they look into the death of a renowned artist whose house they are renting (at the same time, accidentally) – and it’s full of unexpected twists and turns!

Este thriller de Guillaume Musso é viciante e agarra o leitor desde o início. Segue os dois personagens principais enquanto investigam a morte de um artista de renome cuja casa estão (por acidente, ao mesmo tempo) a alugar – e está cheio de reviravoltas inesperadas!

The Nightingale

Kristin Hannah wrote this historical fiction novel that brilliantly describes the difficulties and horrors that the women in France survived during German Occupation in World War II.

Kristin Hannah escreveu este romance histórico que descreve de forma brilhante as dificuldades e os horrores que as mulheres em França passaram durante a Ocupação Alemã na Segunda Guerra Mundial.

TV Shows

The Hook-Up Plan

Netflix’s original show is as stylish and charming as you’d expect from anything or anyone that comes from Paris. It is a modern, silly, cute and funny romantic comedy that has all the makings of a classic. I watched it in one evening and have been recommending it to friends and family since!

Esta série original do Netflix tem tanto estilo e charme como seria de esperar de algo ou alguém vindo de Paris. É uma comédia romântica tola, fofinha e divertida que tem tudo para se tornar um clássico. Vi a série numa noite e tenho vindo a recomendar a amigos e família desde então!

Call My Agent

A sitcom about a Parisian talent firm, whose agents deal with some of France’s biggest stars. Produced by Cedric Klapisch, this is a really good watch!

Uma comédia sobre uma agência de talentos em Paris, cujos agentes representam alguns dos maiores nomes em França. A série é produzida por Cedric Klapisch e vê-se muito bem!
