A weekend in Seville

Back in January I noticed the cold, short days were really getting me down more than usual, and I felt like I needed a break. That’s when my friend Matilde went to Seville and, inspired by her posts and stories, I decided to book myself a trip there too.

Em Janeiro dei por mim a ficar mais em baixo do que é costume com os dias frios e curtos e a precisar de uma mudança de ares. Foi nessa altura que a minha amiga Matilde foi a Sevilha e eu, inspirada pelos posts e Stories que ela publicou, decidi marcar uma viagem para lá ir também.

It was an impulsive decision that turned out to be the perfect winter weekend break! The weather was mild, the sun was shining and the streets were lined with trees bearing beautiful, fragrant oranges – it was everything I could have hoped for.

Foi uma decisão impulsiva que acabou por se tornar na escapadinha perfeita de inverno! O tempo estava agradável, estava sol e as ruas estavam cheia de laranjeiras em fruto que cheiravam tão bem – não podia ter pedido mais.

How to get there

There are flights from Gatwick to Seville from both low cost and major airlines, and the airport there isn’t very far from the city, which makes it convenient for a quick getaway.

De Londres, há voos de Gatwick para Sevilha tanto com companhias low cost como maiores, e o aeroporto em Sevilha é próximo da cidade, o que a torna conveniente para uma escapadinha de fim-de-semana.

Where to stay

I stayed at the Hotel Boutique Elvira Plaza in Barrio Santa Cruz (the cutest, oldest, most picturesque area). The room was really reasonably priced, especially considering how well located the hotel is, and how beautiful and comfortable the room was. I would’ve paid for the view of the orange trees alone!! This hotel partners with nearby Halo Boutique Hotel where you check in/out and have breakfast – it’s not even a minute walk from Elvira and it also looks beautiful.

Fiquei no Hotel Boutique Elvira Plaza no Bairro de Santa Cruz (o mais bonito, antigo e pitoresco). O quarto não é caro, especialmente quando se tem em conta o quão bem localizado é o Hotel e o quão bonito e confortável o quarto. Este hotel tem parceria com o hotel Halo, onde se faz o check in/out e se toma o pequeno almoço – não fica nem a um minuto de distância e também parece lindo.

What to visit

I always recommend wandering around but in Seville it’s definitely the thing to do – especially around Santa Cruz, where all the streets are charming, all the squares have cute restaurants and all the gardens are covered in orange trees bearing fruit.

Recomendo sempre passear sem rumo; mas em Sevilha isto é mesmo o que se deve fazer – especialmente em Santa Cruz, onde todas as ruas são uma delícia, todas as praças têm restaurantes giros e todos os jardins têm laranjeiras em fruto.

The Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in the world, is definitely worth a visit. Not only does it have beautiful interiors, but it is also home to the Giralda tower, one of the most incredible bell towers (former Minaret) ever, and the beautiful Patio de los Naranjos.

A Catedral, a maior igreja do estilo Gótico no mundo, vale bem a pena visitar. Não só tem interiores lindíssimos, como tem a Giralda, uma das torres sineiras (antigo Minarete) mais incríveis de sempre, bem como o delicioso Patio de los Naranjos.

The Real Alcázar is right next to the Cathedral and it is a must see. Its History combines elements from Muslim and Christian rule. And it has some of the most amazing interiors, patios and gardens I have ever seen, in the incredible Mudéjar style. Worth buying tickets online in advance (especially if you want to do the tour of the palace on the top floor) because the queues are insane!

Mesmo ao lado da Catedral fica o Real Alcázar, que é imperdível. A História deste edifício combina elementos dos domínios Muçulmanos e Cristãos nesta cidade. E tem alguns dos interiores, pátios e jardins mais bonitos que alguma vez vi, no estilo Mudéjar. Vale a pena marcar bilhete (especialmente se quiserem fazer a visita ao palácio no andar de cima) pela internet com antecedência porque as filas são uma loucura!

I also really enjoyed visiting two homes that belong to Spanish noble families. The first was Palacio de las Dueñas, of the House of Alba. It is a gorgeous house, covered by beautiful bougainvillea (in the summer, this must be magical!) with beautiful patios and interiors filled with impressive pieces!

Também adorei visitar duas casas pertencentes a famílias da nobreza Espanhola. A primeira foi o Palacio de las Dueñas, da Casa de Alba. É uma casa linda, coberta de buganvílias lindas (no verão, deve ser mágico!) com pátios lindos e interiores repletos de peças impressionantes!

Casa de Pilatos, of the House of Medinaceli, was my second visit and it took my breath away. The beautiful main patio is surrounded by incredible classical statues and the most beautiful tiles you have ever seen. It’s again built in the Mudéjar style but it also mixes in some Renaissance elements, especially on the top floor – which you should definitely visit in a guided tour if you can!

A Casa de Pilatos, da Casa de Medinaceli, foi a segunda que visitei e a que me deixou sem fôlego. O pátio principal é incrível, rodeado por estátuas clássicas e os azulejos mais bonitos que já vi. Mais uma vez segue o estilo Mudéjar mas também tem toques de Renascimento, especialmente no andar de cima – que devem mesmo visitar numa visita guiada se tiverem oportunidade!

Plaza de España holds the gorgeous pavilion built for the Ibero-American exhibition of 1929 – the square is huge and the architecture impressive – so much beauty and detail! It was a shame that the pond where boats usually sail was dry and looking quite sad…hopefully they’re cleaning it and it will be back to it’s usual, prettier, state soon!

Na Praça de Espanha fica o maravilhoso pavilhão construído para a exposição Ibero-Americana de 1929 – a praça é gigante e a arquitectura é impressionante, tanta beleza e tantos detalhes! Tive pena que o lago que costuma ter barcos a passear estivesse seco e com mau aspecto…espero que o estejam só a limpar e que volte ao seu estado habitual, mais bonito, em breve!

Where to eat

I wanted to try the gorgeous El Pintón or Torres y Garcia but they were full with long waiting times when I got there (note to self: make reservations). So I started wandering and came across La Cata Ciega – a tiny tapas place with delicious food, great wine and excellent service! Couldn’t recommend enough.

Queria experimentar o El Pintón ou o Torres y Garcia, mas estavam muito cheios com listas de espera grandes quando lá cheguei (para a próxima tenho de marcar mesa). Então pus-me à procura e passei no La Cata Ciega – um restaurante de tapas pequeno com óptima comida, vinho delicioso e um excelente atendimento! Não podia recomendar mais.

I also found a lovely coffee place near Casa de Pilatos, called Almazen Café. I had a delicious cappuccino and chocolate cookie. Yummy!

Também encontrei um café giríssimo ao pé da Casa de Pilatos, chamado Almazen Café. Pedi um cappuccino e um cookie de chocolate e estavam ambos deliciosos!
