Movies on my list

Whenever Awards Season approaches at the beginning of a new year, I start researching among the nominees what films I want to watch. I love watching the Oscars and a few years back I set myself the challenge to watch all the movies nominated for Best Picture – I like being able to have an informed opinion on the winner (yes, yes, I’m a nerd)!

Sempre que começa a Época de Prémios no início de cada ano, começo a fazer pesquisa entre os filmes nomeados para decidir quais é que quero ver. Adoro ver os Óscares e aqui há uns anos decidi desafiar-me a mim mesma a ver todos os nomeados para Melhor Filme – gosto de poder ter uma opinião informada sobre o vencedor (sim, sim, sou uma nerd)!

This year, for the first time, I had actually seen 4 of the 8 Best Picture nominees when they were announced! And I watched Roma on the day the noms were announced.

Este ano, pela primeira vez, já tinha visto 4 dos 8 nomeados quando foram anunciados! E vi o Roma no dia em que foram anunciadas as nomeações.

Roma

Roma might be my favourite of the bunch so far. Original, moving, beautifully filmed – it seems like such a simple story but it touches on so many important, interesting topics. I was hooked from the start and loved every minute. Just wonderful.

Acho que Roma é até agora o meu preferido. Original, emotivo, visualmente lindo – parece uma história tão simples mas toca em tantos assuntos importantes e interessantes. Prendeu-me desde o início e adorei o filme todo. Simplesmente maravilhoso.

The Favourite

The Favourite is completely nuts. It’s an absurd, based-on-reality story with incredible performances from all the cast – but for me the one who stood out the most was Emma Stone. What a role!

The Favourite é uma loucura. É uma história absurda e baseada na realidade, e o elenco principal está todo maravilhoso – acima de tudo, para mim, a Emma Stone. Que papelão!

Blackkklansman

Blackkklansman is such an unlikely but incredible story, told brilliantly in a style that only Spike Lee could achieve – and linking it to modern times in an incredibly powerful way.

Blackkkansman é uma história improvável e incrível, contada de forma brilhante no estilo único de Spike Lee – e fazendo a ligação com os nossos tempos de forma impressionante.

Black Panther

Black Panther is a remarkable Marvel film. An interesting take on the superhero genre, touching on the subject of race and prejudice that are so relevant now, more than ever. With excellent special effects and a wonderful cast, this is a surprise (as part of the blockbuster club) but it’s an interesting choice.

Black Panther é um impressionante filme da Marvel. É uma perspectiva interessante sobre o género dos super-heróis, falando em questões de preconceito e raça que são tão relevantes nos dias que correm. Com óptimos efeitos especiais e um elenco espectacular, esta nomeação é uma surpresa (por ser um blockbuster) mas é uma escolha interessante.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody is an interesting film, about one of the best bands of all time – and the man who is perhaps the most iconic rock frontman there ever was, Freddie Mercury. Personally, I think it stayed on the surface a bit too much – there could’ve been more depth to such an incredible history and remarkable character. But it is catchy!

Bohemian Rhapsody é um filme interessante sobre uma das melhores bandas de sempre – e do vocalista mais icónico da história do rock, Freddie Mercury. Pessoalmente, acho que ficou muito pela superfície – podiam ter aprofundado muito mais numa história que é incrível e sobre uma personagem tão marcante. Mas é engraçado!

After the first few nominees, I still have to see…
