My two favourite things, for as long as I can remember, have been films and Christmas. I love each individually but I love them together even more!

Sound of Music
Not exactly Christmassy; but Portuguese TV always played this on Christmas Day, after lunch, and I spent most of my Christmasses having a post-Turkey nap on the sofa of my grandma’s house to the sound of Julie Andrews’ voice – and it became synonymous of Christmas! It’s a classic for a reason: everything is wonderful, from the songs, to the cast, to the wardrobe and of course, the story. And after 34 years of watching it religiously, I still find new things!
Música no Coração não é um filme Natalício, mas em Portugal este filme passava sempre no dia de Natal depois de almoço e eu passei a maior parte dos meus Natais a fazer uma sesta pós-perú no sofá da minha avó a ouvir a voz da Julie Andrews – então o filme tornou-se sinónimo de Natal! É um clássico por boa razão: é tudo maravilhoso, das músicas, ao elenco, ao guarda-roupa e, claro, a história. E depois de 34 anos a ver o filme religiosamente ainda encontro coisas novas!
Home Alone 2
This has long been part of my favourite films, not just Christmas ones. The unreal adventures Kevin has, running around some of NYC’s most famous sights, and once again defeating the bad guys, never fail to make me smile. And the conversations between Kevin and the Pigeon Lady are so lovely.
Este filme faz parte dos meus favoritos de sempre, não só de Natal. As aventuras incríveis que o Kevin tem, passando por vários dos locais mais conhecidos de NYC, e mais uma vez levando a melhor sobre os maus da fita, nunca deixam de me fazer sorrir. E as conversas entre o Kevin e a Senhora dos Pombos são tão fofas.
The Holiday
The cosiest Christmas film ever. The Cottage in Surrey, the music, Jack Black’s character being adorable, and Kate Winslet being peak inspiration. I love how she develops throughout the film and think a lot can be learned from her character when it comes to strength, grace and of course, Gumption. It’s a lovely story of finding your feet, making connections in a strange place, and it’s just so good to watch on a cold rainy day!
O filme de Natal mais aconchegante de sempre. A casa no Surrey, a música, o personagem adorável do Jack Black, e a Kate Winslet a ser uma inspiração. Adoro como a personagem se desenvolve ao longo do filme e pode-se aprender bastante com a personagem dela no que toca a força, elegância e garra. É uma história deliciosa sobre ultrapassar problemas e aprender, estabelecer relações num sítio estranho e é tão bom de ver num dia frio e chuvoso!
Love, Actually
I won’t lie: I watch this film to hear Colin Firth speaking Portuguese because frankly that’s as adorable and romantic as it gets. A mix of stories to show love in different ways – it can be funny and sweet but also sad. All of those make up for a great seasonal film.
Não vou mentir: vejo este filme só para ouvir o Colin Firth a falar português, porque francamente é a coisa mais adorável e romântica que há. Um misto de histórias para mostrar as várias formas de amar – pode ser divertido e romântico, mas também é triste. Tudo isso resulta num óptimo filme para esta época.
While You Were Sleeping
One of my favourite early Sandra Bullock films is this cute romantic comedy set around Christmas in Chicago. It’s a lovely story about feeling lonely, finding your people, and falling in love, with a lot of really funny moments thrown in for good measure. Delightful!
Esta comédia romântica passada à volta do Natal em Chicago é um dos meus filmes preferidos do início da carreira de Sandra Bullock. É uma história querida sobre a solidão, descobrir as nossas pessoas, encontrar o amor e tudo com vários momentos super cómicos pelo meio. Uma delícia!
Elf
For a while I didn’t really get into this film but recently I’ve really started to enjoy it. It’s so sweet and lovely despite the sometimes over-the-top humour. I love the innocence and the genuine excitement Buddy the elf shows about everything – it’s such a fun representation of childlike wonder!
Durante muito tempo não quis ver este filme, mas recentemente tenho adorado. É tão querido, apesar do humor muitas vezes exagerado. Adoro a inocência e o entusiasmo genuíno do Elfo Buddy por tudo – é uma representação tão gira da excitação das crianças!
