Books I’ve been loving #2

Getting the Amazon Kindle has been almost life changing for me – I’ve been reading so much more, and loving so many books!

Quase posso dizer que Kindle da Amazon mudou a minha vida – tenho lido muito mais e tenho estado a adorar imensos livros!

Today I’m doing a little round-up of the books I’ve read and loved recently – hope you like it!

Hoje faço-vos um apanhado dos livros que mais gostei de ler nos últimos tempos – espero que gostem!

The Nightingale

This book really surprised me. It starts slow, but it grips you right from the beginning, almost without you noticing.

Este livro surpreendeu-me. Começa um bocado lento, mas agarra o leitor desde o início, quase sem darmos por isso.

It’s a story of how horrible life was during the years of World War II, focusing on the women and children left behind in Occupied France. It tells of survival, resistance and strength. Of family, love, moral values. It’s a great read – and often absolutely heartbreaking. I’d say it’s an important read in the times we live in – to ensure people remember what divisive, hateful rhetoric can lead to.

É uma história das dificuldades da vida durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, especialmente focado nas mulheres e crianças que ficaram na França Ocupada. Fala de sobrevivência, resistência e força. De família, amor e valores morais. É um óptimo livro – e várias vezes completamente desolador. Diria que é um livro importante para ler nos tempos que correm – para garantir que as pessoas se lembram ao que podem levar os discursos de ódio e divisão.

The Lido

This book is just wonderful! It touches on everything from History of London, to the importance of community, to friendship, love and even food.

Este livro é uma delícia! Fala de tudo desde a História de Londres, à importância da comunidade, à amizade, ao amor e até à comida.

It is follows the unlikely friendship of Rosemary, an elderly woman who swims at the Brixton Lido every day; and Kate, a journalist with the local paper who is moved to help the campaign to keep the Lido open. Through this, Kate deals with her anxiety and panic attacks, a result of feeling extremely lonely after moving to a new city like London.

Segue a amizade inesperada de Rosemary, uma senhora idosa que todos os dias nada na piscina ao ar livre (o Lido) de Brixton; e Kate, uma jornalista do jornal local que se dedica à campanha para manter a piscina aberta. Ao longo disto, Kate lida com ansiedade e ataques de pânico, que resultam de se sentir extremamente sozinha depois de se mudar para uma cidade nova e grande como é Londres.

Rich People Problems

In the past month I finished the Crazy Rich Asians Trilogy, and let me tell you, I really enjoyed it.

No último mês acabei a trilogia Crazy Rich Asians e deixem que vos diga, adorei.

This book not only touches in the family drama and all the arguments and backstabbing that the trilogy is famous for – but actually talks a (very little) bit about the History of Singapore, enough to actually make me learn more about what happened there during the Second World War.

Este livro não só segue o drama familiar, as discussões e intrigas que tornaram a trilogia famosa – mas também fala um bocadinho sobre a História de Singapura, o suficiente para me fazer querer saber mais sobre o que lá aconteceu durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.

In general the book is absurd and over-the-top as you’d expect, and it drives you nuts sometimes, such is the opulence and drama – but it’s such a fun, easy read, perfect for a bit of escapism from everyday life!

No geral, o livro é absurdo e excessivo como seria de esperar, e dá com uma pessoa em doida tal é a opulência e o drama – mas é uma leitura fácil de divertida, perfeita para um escape da vida quotidiana!

One Day in December

This is a very light read, perfect when you just want something chilled to distract you from life. A cross between One Day and Love Actually, it follows the relationships between three friends (a boy, two girls) along several years of their lives. It’s really sweet and easy to read, great for a lazy afternoon with a cup of tea and a blanket.

Este livro é de leitura muito fácil, perfeito quando queremos uma coisa para nos distrair da nossa vida. É um misto do One Day com o Love Actually e segue os laços entre três amigos (um rapaz, duas raparigas) ao longo de vários anos das suas vidas. É um livro agradável e fácil de ler, óptimo para uma tarde de preguiça com uma chávena de chá e uma manta.

After these I really struggled with finding my next read, I tried so many samples on Kindle and wasn’t feeling anything – I suppose that’s what you get after a streak of seriously good reads! If you have any recommendations, send them my way!

Depois destes tenho tido alguma dificuldade em encontrar um livro que me apeteça mesmo ler, já tentei várias amostras no Kindle e nada me chama – é nisto que dá ler vários livros seguidos de que se gosta tanto! Se tiverem alguma recomendação, não hesitem em dizer!
