If you follow my Instagram you’ll have seen I’ve spent a few days last week on a long weekend in the Spanish capital of Madrid. The weather was lovely and I fell in love with the culture, life, and just general vibe the city has to offer! This is a little guide to share some of my tips and favourite places – hope you like it!

Se me seguirem no Instagram, já saberão que passei uns dias de fim-de-semana prolongado em Madrid. O tempo estava uma delícia e apaixonei-me pela cultura, pelo estilo de vida e pelo ambiente que aquela cidade tem para oferecer! Este é um pequeno guia para partilhar algumas das minhas dicas e os meus sítios preferidos! Espero que gostem!

How to get there

I flew to Madrid on the first flight of the day, to make sure I had most of that first day to explore. Let me tell you, it was painful to realise I’d gotten to Heathrow before security even opened!

Apanhei o primeiro voo do dia para Madrid, para garantir que tinha a maior parte do primeiro dia para explorar. Deixem que vos diga, foi doloroso chegar a Heathrow antes sequer de estar aberto o controlo de segurança!

Once in Madrid Barajas airport, the journey into the centre of the city is really easy. I was staying very near to the Atocha train station, so got a train that took me there in around 30mins.

Chegando a Madrid Barajas, é facílimo chegar ao centro da cidade. Fiquei perto da estação de Atocha e por isso apanhei um comboio que me pôs lá em cerca de 30 minutos.

Where to stay

I knew I wanted to visit the main three museums, so when it came to picking an area to stay, it made sense to stay nearby.

Sabia que queria visitar os três principais museus, por isso quando chegou a altura de escolher onde ficar, fez sentido procurar ali na zona.

In the end I decided for an airbnb in the neighbourhood just a few streets away from the museums: it was my first experience at an airbnb and I couldn’t have been happier! The flat was simple but stylish and had everything you could need to feel at home and rested while exploring a new city.

Acabei por escolher um airbnb no bairro umas ruas ao lado dos museus: foi a minha primeira experiência num airbnb e não podia ter ficado mais satisfeita! O apartamento era simples mas bem decorado e com tudo o que podia querer para me sentir em casa e descansada enquanto explorava uma cidade nova.

Where to eat/drink/get coffee

My to-do list for Madrid had just as many coffee shops and restaurants as it did museums – probably more to be honest! I wanted to get the culture fix, but also wanted it to be a relaxing few days where I’d take time to sit in cafés relaxing, taking in the local life, and reading my book. Here are my favourites.

A minha lista de Madrid tinha tantos cafés e restaurantes como museus – talvez até mais, para ser franca! Queria fazer o lado cultural, mas também queria ter uns dias de descanso onde pudesse passar tempo num café, relaxada, a apreciar a vida local e a ler o meu livro. Aqui ficam os meus favoritos.

Zero Point Coffee

This place was just 5 minutes away from my airbnb, and it was a brilliant find! With lovely staff, great coffee and a cosy atmosphere, it was perfect for a coffee fix on my first and last days in Madrid!

Este café ficava a 5 minutos do meu airbnb e foi um achado! Com um atendimento super simpático, café óptimo e um ambiente agradável, foi o local ideal para tomar café no primeiro e no último dia em Madrid!

Faraday

Half coffee shop, half record store, this place takes specialty coffee to another level! The coffee was great, the space was welcoming, and I loved sitting at the mezzanine level reading for a while before starting my day of exploring.

Metade café, metade loja de discos, está loja leva o specialty coffee a outro nível! O café era óptimo, o espaço era convidativo e adorei estar um bocado sentada na mezzanine a ler o meu livro antes de começar a explorar.

La Colectiva

I met the lovely Yai here for coffee on the Saturday and loved this place! It’s really cosy, with delicious coffee and vegan treats. Next time I’m in town (there will be a next time, and it won’t be too far away) I’m definitely going back here for brunch!

Encontrei a querida Yai aqui para tomarmos café juntas no sábado e adorei o sítio! É confortável, tem café delicioso e petiscos vegan. Na minha próxima visita (sim, vai haver e não, não vai demorar muito) quero voltar lá para tomar brunch!

Vacaciones

This bar caught my attention when I saw it on Andrea’s feed – the floors, the decor…I knew I needed to visit! I spent a while resting my tired legs and feet there, drinking a non-alcoholic Piña Colada and reading my book. It was just lovely!

Este bar chamou-me a atenção quando o vi no feed da Andrea – o chão, a decoração…sabia que tinha de lá ir! Passei um bom bocado lá a descansar as minhas pernas e pés que estavam exaustos, a beber uma piña colada sem álcool e a ler o meu livro. Foi tão agradável!

Gran Clavel

Another place I found through Andrea’s feed – this bar restaurant is beautiful, with serious Wes Anderson vibes. It’s a nice place to go in the evenings for an aperitif and some light food.

Outro sítio que descobri graças ao feed da Andrea – este bar restaurante é lindo, com muitos ares de Wes Anderson. É um bom sítio para ir tomar um aperitivo com uns petiscos leves ao final da tarde.

What to see

The Museums

Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen are all incredible museums with collections that will take an art-lover’s breath away. I’d recommend getting the Paseo del Arte ticket which allows you visits to the 3 museums for a cheaper price (vs buying individual tickets).

Os museus do Prado, Reina Sofia e Thyssen são incríveis e têm colecções de cortar a respiração de qualquer amante da arte. Recomendo o bilhete Paseo del Arte que dá acesso aos três museus a um preço mais baixo (do que se comprassem bilhetes individuais).

For me, Reina Sofia and it’s incredible collection of Cubist and Surrealist paintings was the highlight. I realised the lifelong dream of seeing Guernica, Picasso’s masterpiece, in real life – and it was just as emotional as you’d expect.

Para mim, o Museu Reina Sofia e a sua colecção de quadros Cubistas e Surrealistas foi o grande destaque. Concretizei o sonho de uma vida de ver Guernica, a obra prima de Picasso, ao vivo – e foi uma experiência tão emotiva como seria de esperar.

Palácio Real

I may be here #adulting, but I’m still a little girl who loves princess stories at heart – so I love a good visit to a Palace! Madrid’s Palácio Real was no exception – there are some truly jaw-dropping rooms inside, especially King Carlos III’s dressing room or the porcelain room.

Posso estar aqui a fazer de adulta, mas no fundo ainda sou uma menina que adora histórias de princesas – por isso adoro uma boa visita a um Palácio! O Palácio Real de Madrid não foi excepção – há salas que deixam uma pessoa de queixo caído, especialmente a sala de vestir do Rei Carlos III ou a sala de porcelana.

Parque del Retiro

For a more relaxing visit, Retiro Park is the thing! It’s great to enjoy the beauty of the lake and the Crystal Palace. Especially now with hints of Autumn leaves, wandering around the park was just the nicest thing!

Para uma visita mais relaxante, o Parque del Retiro é o ideal! É óptimo poder apreciar a beleza do lago e do Palácio de Cristal. Especialmente agora que está a ficar com tons de Outono, passear pelo parque foi uma delícia!

Malasaña

At Yai’s suggestion I spent some time in the evening exploring the Malasaña area – it’s an older area of Madrid but at the moment it feels alive and modern! It’s filled with cool street corners, cool murals, excellent independent shops and tons of bars with terraces. It was great to experience this on a warm evening as everyone was enjoying the weather and each other’s company!

Seguindo a sugestão da Yai, fui explorar a zona de Malasaña – é uma zona antiga de Madrid, mas que actualmente é cheia de vida e super moderna! Está repleta de cantos com imensa pinta, murais giros, lojas independentes óptimas e imensos bares com esplanadas. Foi óptimo ver esta zona num fim de tarde quente, quando toda a gente estava a gozar do bom tempo e da companhia!

The best views

There are some great views to be had from up high in Madrid! I loved the view from the top of Circulo Bellas Artes to the Metropolis building, and from the Gourmet Experience of El Corte Ingles Callao to the Schweppes building!!

Há óptimos sítios com vistas óptimas sobre Madrid! Adorei a vista do cimo do Círculo Bellas Artes para o edifício Metropolis, e do Gourmet Experience do Corte Ingles Callao para o edifício Schweppes!!
