Top 3…books into movies

We’re right in the middle of awards season and so far, I’ve really been loving the nominated movies I’ve seen. Watching ‘Call me by your name’ got me thinking about other books made into movies that I have loved.

Estamos bem no meio da época de prémios de cinema e até agora tenho adorado os filmes nomeados que vi. Quando vi o ‘Call me by your name’ fiquei a pensar outros livros que foram adaptados ao cinema que eu adorei.

Now I know that the usual thing people say (myself included) is that the book is usually better than the film – so I’ve decided I much prefer watching the movie first and then reading the book. I feel like doing it that way avoids disappointment, and also adds to stories I really loved in the first place! Does anyone else even do this?!

Toda a gente (eu incluída) diz que os livros são normalmente bem melhores que os filmes – por isso há já algum tempo decidi que prefiro muito mais ver o filme primeiro e depois ler o livro. Acho que fazer isso evita desilusões e desenvolve histórias que eu já tinha adorado! Mais alguém faz isto?!

Here are my favourite books into movies – that I really recommend watching/reading in that order!

Aqui ficam os meus filmes adaptados ao cinema favoritos – que eu recomendo ver/ler nessa ordem!

The House of the Spirits // A Casa dos Espíritos

When I spent my summer break with my godmother and cousins, there were afternoons and evenings dedicated to watch movies that stayed with me for life. They’re some of my favourite memories! One of these films was The House of The Spirits – which we watched because a) it’s amazing, b) it stars Jeremy Irons (my godmother’s lifelong crush!), Meryl Streep, Winona Ryder and host of other amazing actors, and c) it was partly filmed in Portugal.

Quando passava as férias de Verão com a minha madrinha e primas, tínhamos tardes e noites dedicadas a ver filmes que ficaram comigo para a vida. São das minhas memórias favoritas! Um desses filmes foi A Casa dos Espíritos – que vimos porque a) é fantástico, b) tem o Jeremy Irons (a panca da vida da minha madrinha!), a Meryl Streep, a Winona Ryder e tantos outros óptimos actores e c) foi parcialmente filmado em Portugal.

I don’t think I have ever been so moved by a movie, or a story, as I was back then by this one. I had to read the book, by Isabel Allende. The book goes so much deeper into the family saga, gives so much more detail about the characters, their personalities and what makes them special, their struggles. I read it so quickly then, and I’ve since reread it and loved it just as much!

Acho que nunca um filme, ou uma história, mexeu tanto comigo como este fez naquela altura. Tive de ler logo o livro de Isabel Allende. O livro entra em muito mais detalhe na saga familiar, da muito mais detalhes sobre os personagens, as suas personalidades e o que os torna especiais, e as suas lutas. Li o livro num abrir e fechar de olhos e já voltei a ler e adorei outra vez!

Practical Magic // Magia e Sedução

Way back in 1998 teenage me had a Sandra Bullock weekend: I went to the cinema on Saturday to watch Practical Magic and on Sunday to watch Forces of Nature. I loved them both, for very different reasons, but Practical Magic was the one I truly fell in love with. I begged my dad to use this great place he’d discovered online, Amazon, to order the book. It arrived unbelievably fast and I sped through it. I loved discovering more about Sally’s life when she left the Aunts – it painted such a cool picture of living in Brooklyn that I still haven’t forgotten.

Nos dois de 1998, a Teresa adolescente teve um fim-de-semana Sandra Bullock: fui ao cinema no sábado ver o Practical Magic e no domingo ver Forces of Nature. Adorei os dois por razões diferentes, mas apaixonei-me mesmo pelo Practical Magic. Implorei ao meu pai para usar um site óptimo que tinha descoberto na net, o Amazon, para encomendar o livro. Chegou super rápido e eu li-o num instante. Adorei saber mais sobre a vida da Sally quando deixou as Tias – dava uma ideia tão gira da vida em Brooklyn que eu ainda não esqueci.

Little Women // As Mulherzinhas

The 1994 film with Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon and Christian Bale is one of my firm favourites. I watched it countless times it as a teenager, and dreamt of being more like Jo (probably my favourite literary character). I read the book years later, and while I do think the film remains faithful to the story, it’s great to discover more details about these characters that I’ve grown up loving. The challenges they face, their passions, weaknesses, etc. It truly is a classic!

O filme de 1994 com a Winona Ryder, a Susan Sarandon e o Christian Bale é um dos meus preferidos. Vi-o vezes sem conta quando era adolescente e sonhei em ser mais como a Jo (talvez a minha personagem literária preferida de sempre). Li o livro anos mais tarde e, apesar de achar que o filme lhe é fiel, adorei descobrir mais detalhes sobre as personagens que cresci a adorar. Os desafios que enfrentam, as suas paixões, fraquezas, etc. É mesmo um clássico!
