3 reasons to watch…Lady Bird

One of the most buzzed about films this year has been Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut. It is a coming of age story that follows Christine “Lady Bird” MacPherson in her senior year in High School, in 2002/03, her friendships, loves, aspirations and experiences. Lady Bird is a teenager who longs for more: more culture, more opportunity, more sophistication. But to her frustration she cannot find these in her hometown of Sacramento, California.

Um dos filmes mais falados deste ano tem sido Lady Bird, o primeiro filme realizado por Greta Gerwig. É uma daquelas histórias de crescimento que segue Christine “Lady Bird” MacPherson no seu ano de finalista na Secundária em 2002/03, as suas amizades, amores, ambições e experiências. Lady Bird é uma adolescente que sonha com mais: mais cultura, mais oportunidade, mais sofisticação. Mas para frustração dela, não consegue encontrá-las na sua cidade natal de Sacramento, Califórnia.

The script is a thing of beauty, it is perfectly real, with well developed, complex characters. The soundtrack is incredible. The photography is stunning – just the first few images transport you to that world. And the cast is phenomenal. Saoirse Ronan is at the top of her game here – showing exactly why she has earned her third Oscar nomination at just 23! Lucas Hedges and Timothée Chalamet are incredible in their roles, and Laurie Metcalf is fantastic as Lady Bird’s mum!

O guião é maravilhoso, é realista, com personagens complexos e bem desenvolvidos. A banda sonora é incrível. A cinematografia é linda – só as primeiras imagens conseguem transportar-nos para aquele mundo. E o elenco é fenomenal. Saoirse Ronan está no seu melhor – mostrando exactamente porque é que aos 23 anos já vai na terceira nomeação para um Oscar! Lucas Hedges e Timothée Chalamet estão fantásticos nos seus papéis e Laurie Metcalf está fantástica no papel de mãe de Lady Bird!

Talvez já tenha dado para reparar que adorei o filme – mas aqui ficam as minhas principais razões para o irem ver…

Nostalgia

If you, like me, graduated from High School and started University near 2002, so many things about this film will resonate. What it felt to want to be different, to want to belong. The friendships you made in that time that became the most meaningful and have stuck with you. The feeling of moving away from Home and suddenly feeling such an appreciation for the places you’d known all your life. Even the music reminds me of those days – god damn Dave Matthews Band (not really, though, I really like them). All of these things rang true with me, despite having gone through them half a world away.

Se, como eu, tiverem acabado o liceu/começado a faculdade por volta de 2002, há tanta coisa neste filme que vai despertar memórias. O que era sentir-mo-nos diferentes, querer pertencer. As amizades que fizemos naquela altura e que se tornaram as mais importantes e ficaram connosco. Querer viver longe. Mudarmo-nos e de repente começarmos a apreciar melhor os sítios que conhecemos toda a vida. Até a música me lembra aquela altura – raios partam a Dave Matthews Band (só a brincar, que eu gosto imenso deles). Todas estas coisas me fizeram imenso sentido, apesar de as ter vivido a meio mundo de distância.

Emotional Rollercoaster

Lady Bird takes you through all the emotions in the spectrum. It is soothing and moving at the same time, it makes you laugh out loud and then makes you feel like you were punched in the stomach. It is relatable and imaginative at the same time and all of it contributes to a fantastic film.

Lady Bird faz-nos percorrer todas as emoções que existem. É calmante e ao mesmo tempo mexe connosco, faz-nos rir às gargalhadas e logo a seguir faz parecer que levámos um murro no estômago. É realista e ao mesmo tempo cheio de imaginação e tudo isto contribui para um filme fantástico.

Relationships

I suppose what struck me the most was Lady Bird’s relationship with her mother – I’d read somewhere that this film would make you call your mother and it is absolutely true. For me, it made me remember my teenage “struggles” with my parents, mostly my mum, and how I began to understand her more as I grew up, and moved away from home. It really pulls at the heart strings, in the best way.

Acho que o que mexeu mais comigo foi a relação da Lady Bird com a mãe – li algures que este filme faz com que queiramos ligar à nossa mãe e é bem verdade. A mim lembrou-me das minhas “lutas” adolescentes com os meus pais, especialmente a minha mãe, e como ao crescer e vir viver para Inglaterra comecei a percebe-la melhor. Puxa ao sentimento, da melhor maneira!

Let’s not forget as well that this film has made Greta Gerwig only the 5th woman to ever be nominated for a Best Director Oscar – and it’s her first film as a Director! What an incredible debut!

Não nos esqueçamos também que este filme tornou Greta Gerwig somente a 5ª mulher nomeada para um Oscar de Melhor Realizador(a) – e foi o primeiro filme que ela realizou! Que começo incrível!
