For a good few years I have been fascinated by the art of calligraphy. I searched Pinterest for fonts and self learning techniques, I practiced with nib and ink as well as brush pens…I love how beautiful words look when they’re perfectly drawn.
Desde há uns anos que ando fascinada com a arte da caligrafia. Procurei letras e técnicas no Pinterest, pratiquei com aparo e tinta e com canetas pincel…Adoro a forma bonita das palavras quando são desenhadas de forma perfeita.
I’d been trying to get to Quill’s Beginner’s Workshop for a while, but never quite managed to go, for one reason or another. But last week I finally went and was it worth it!
Já andava a querer ir ao workshop de principiantes da Quill há uns tempos, mas por um motivo ou outro nunca consegui ir. Até que na passada semana fui e valeu bem a pena!
Julia, our teacher for the evening, had herself started out by doing a workshop with Quill three years ago, and now works as a lettering artist. She is clearly so passionate about this art, and so patient and lovely, that the experience became even better.
A Julia, a nossa professora, também começou a fazer caligrafia num workshop da Quill há três anos e agora trabalha como artista de lettering. É claramente apaixonada por esta arte, e é também tão paciente e simpática, que tornou a experiência ainda melhor.
We initially practiced down and up strokes, to get the difference in pressure, then moving to curves, then letters (both capital and lower case) and finally words.
Começámos por praticar riscos para baixo e para cima para perceber a diferença na pressão que devíamos colocar, depois passámos para as curvas, depois para letras (maiúsculas e minúsculas) e, finalmente, palavras.
I’m not artistic, so I got easily frustrated at my attempts, but Julia and the group of lovely ladies in the class created such a supportive, encouraging and fun environment that I felt motivated to carry on practicing!
Não tenho uma veia artística particularmente apurada, por isso facilmente fiquei frustrado com as minhas tentativas, mas tanto a Julia como o grupo de senhoras na aula criaram um ambiente tão positivo, encorajante e divertido que me senti motivada a continuar a praticar!
The next day I started practicing as soon as I got home and I intend to do it for a little bit every evening when I have free time. It’s beautiful but most of all it is relaxing. I even used a bit of my new found skills in writing my Christmas cards!
No dia seguinte comecei a praticar quando cheguei a casa e quero continuar a fazê-lo sempre que tiver tempo à noite. É bonito, mas acima de tudo é relaxante. Até já usei o meu novo talento nos cartões de Natal que enviei!
