Recently I picked up and read through the new book by John Green, the author of beloved YA novels The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns and my personal favourite, Looking for Alaska.
Há umas semanas comprei e li o novo livro de John Green, o autor dos livros The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns e, o meu preferido, Looking for Alaska.
His latest work is called Turtles All the Way Down and it’s a story that involves mystery, friendship, love, the complicated nature of our own thoughts, and a big lizard. These are the three (spoiler free) reasons why you should pick up this book…

#1 Honest look at Mental Health // Descrição honesta da Saúde Mental
The detail in which John Green describes the Mental Health issues that affect the protagonist Aza, is beautifully raw and honest. She wants to be a good friend and daughter, but she gets stuck in what she calls her thought spirals – and the way these are shown in the book is fantastic.
O detalhe que John Green usa para descrever os problemas de saúde mental que afectam Aza, a protagonista, é perfeitamente honesto. Ela quer ser uma boa amiga e filha, mas fica presa naquilo que chama as espirais do pensamento – e a forma como estas espirais são descritas no livro é fantástica.
You can feel Aza’s concerns, her anxiety, almost get the physical reactions she gets as well. It’s clarity on a matter that hasn’t been openly discussed until recently, and it struck a chord with me because of my own anxiety.
Sentimos as preocupações da Aza, a sua ansiedade e quase temos as mesmas reações físicas que ela tem. É uma forma clara de falar sobre um assunto que até há pouco tempo não era discutido abertamente, e mexeu comigo por causa dos meus próprios problemas com a ansiedade.
#2 True friends stick around // Os verdadeiros amigos ficam connosco
Aza and her “best and most fearless friend” Daisy have a special bond, but they also have issues and arguments like all friends. What I loved about it though is that even though Daisy gets frustrated at Aza; or Aza gets mad at Daisy, ultimately they are there for one another no matter what.
A Aza e a sua “melhor e mais destemida amiga” Daisy têm uma ligação especial, mas também têm problemas e discussões como todos os amigos. O que eu adorei sobre a relação delas foi que apesar de a Daisy ficar frustrada com a Aza; ou a Aza ficar zangada com a Daisy, no fim de contas estão lá sempre uma para a outra.
And who hasn’t had problems with their best friends over the years? I know I have, but I also know I would do anything for my best friends, and they would for me too. They’re my people.
E depois, quem é que nunca teve problemas com as/os melhores amigas/os ao longo dos anos? Eu sei que tive, mas também sei que faria o que fosse preciso pelas minhas amigas e elas por mim. São as minhas pessoas.
#3 Mystery // Mistério
An accessory to the development of the story is the mystery that Daisy wants Aza’s help in investigating: a local millionaire disappeared and there’s a reward. Following the unveiling of the clues is interesting and exciting – and there’s a level of sadness there too.
Uma parte que ajuda o desenvolvimento da história é o mistério que a Daisy quer que a Aza a ajude a investigar: um milionário local desapareceu e há uma recompensa. Seguir o desvendar das pistas é interessante e emocionante – mas também há uma dose de tristeza.

These were by far my three favourite aspects of the book – but Daisy being a Star Wars fan and writing fan fiction about Rey and Chewbacca was a big plus in my view!
Estes foram, de longe, os meus pontos preferidos do livro – mas o facto da Daisy ser uma grande fã de Star Wars e escrever fan fiction sobre a Rey e o Chewbacca foi um bónus a meu ver!
