Hi guys! I’m back today with a post about a mini-series I binge watched on Netflix a couple of weekends ago: Alias Grace.
Olá a todos! Hoje estou de volta com um post sobre uma mini-série que vi de seguida no Netflix há umas semanas: Alias Grace.
Based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, it tells the story of Grace Marks an Irish immigrant sentenced to life in prison for the murders of Thomas Kinnear and Nancy Montgomery. Though these events are real, the series, like the novel, is fictionalised, as it follows the conversations between Grace and Simon Jordan, a young psychiatrist hired by a committee to try and get Grace exonerated. Apesar dos eventos serem reais, a série, como o livro, é romanceada, seguindo as conversas de Grace com Simon Jordan, um jovem psiquiatra contratado por um grupo que quer tentar que Grace seja perdoada. Characters
I was completely drawn in by the character of Grace Marks. Through the series the viewer is drawn in and almost hypnotised by her story, her demeanour, even her accent. It becomes almost impossible to let go and stop watching – making the series binge-worthy and completely creepy, much like the book is meant to be. Simon Jordan, the doctor, is also excellent, in that he begins by genuinely trying to understand what Grace remembers and then struggles to let go of her, and her story. I also loved the character of Grace’s friend Mary Whitney and how strongly she felt about the rebellion and matters of politics!
Fiquei cativada pela personagem de Grace Marks. Ao longo da série, quem vê é quase que puxado para ela, pela sua história, forma de estar, até pelo sotaque. Torna-se quase impossível de parar de ver – tornando a série muito fácil de ver numa assentada e ligeiramente assustadora, como o livro é suposto ser. O médico, Simon Jordan, também é excelente, já que começa por querer perceber de que é que Grace se lembra e acaba com dificuldade de a largar a ela e à sua história. Também adorei a personagem de Mary Whitney, a amiga de Grace e a forma apaixonada com que falava da revolução e de política.

The story of Grace Marks and the murders of Thomas Kinnear and Nancy Montgomery is real – though the book and series have touches of fiction for the sake of the narrative. And that is fascinating! Did Grace do it? What happened?!
A história de Grace Marks e dos homicídios de Thomas Kinnear e Nancy Montgomery é verdadeira – embora, para ajudar a história, o livro e a série tenham toques de ficção. E isso é fascinante! Será que Grace é culpada? O que aconteceu afinal?!
In addition to that it gives an interesting picture of what Canada was like in the 19th Century, which I didn’t really know much about and loved seeing. The references to the Rebellions of 1837 and 1838 and the Battle of Montgomery’s Tavern were also really interesting to me – and being a lover of History I then went and googled to learn more about it, which is, in my book, a sign of a story well told!
Para além disso dá uma visão interessante de como era o Canadá no século XIX, que eu desconhecia e gostei de ver. As referências às revoluções de 1837 e 1838 e à Batalha de Montgomery’s Tavern também são interessantes – gostando de História como gosto fui logo à procura de mais informação o que, a meu ver, é sinal de uma história bem contada!
Mystery
From the real life story, to the conversations between Grace and Dr Jordan, to the mentions of spirits and memories – all of this creates an air of mystery that keeps you hooked. The series is creepy, but almost hypnotising, and it leaves you wanting more – much like the effect Grace then has on the doctor…
Desde a história verdadeira, às conversas entre Grace e o Dr Jordan, às referências a espíritos e memórias – tudo isto cria um mistério que nos mantém cativados. A série é um bocadinho assustadora, mas quase hipnótica e deixa-nos a querer mais – muito no género do efeito que a Grace tem no médico…

Overall I absolutely loved this series. I was hooked from the first episode and couldn’t stop watching until the end of the 6 episodes – it’s beautiful story telling, with great characters, fantastic casting and great attention to detail when it comes to sets, costumes, etc. I’ve recommended it to friends who have themselves gone and binge watched it too!
No geral adorei esta série. Fiquei viciada logo no primeiro episódio e não consegui parar de ver até ao final dos 6 episódios – é uma forma incrível de contar a história, com personagens óptimos e um elenco fantástico bem como grande detalhe nos cenários, guarda-roupa, etc. Já recomendei a amigas que também a viram de uma assentada!
