I’ve loved knowing more about things I’m interested in for as long as I can remember. I can always be found googling something to have a better understanding of it, be it an actor or musician, a film, a song, or something that’s in the news.

Desde sempre que adoro investigar e saber mais sobre coisas que me interessam. Vou imensas vezes ao Google procurar qualquer coisa para saber mais, seja sobre um actor ou músico, um filme, uma canção, ou algo que vi nas notícias.

Luckily, Netflix has a wonderful selection of documentaries and that has introduced me to great stories, especially those about the music industry that I’m talking about today. So here is the top 3 documentaries that you should definitely watch if you love music – particularly Rock.

Por sorte, o Netflix tem uma óptima selecção de documentários que me apresentou a histórias excelentes, especialmente aquelas sobre a indústria da música das quais vos vou falar hoje. Por isso aqui fica o top 3 de documentários que devem ver se forem fãs de música, e de Rock em particular.

Foo Fighters: Back and Forth

What captivated me about this one was the inside story of what led to the Foo Fighters sound that I love so much. From Dave Grohl’s Nirvana days, to the various band member changes, to the creative processes that led to some of my favourite songs, and one of my favourite albums ever. It helps understand what inspires them, what makes them great. And it’s an awakening of a bigger passion for music that makes you want to go back and listen to your favourite songs all over again.

O que me cativou neste documentário foi a história detalhada do que formou o som dos Foi Fighters, que eu adoro. Desde os dias do Dave Grohl nos Nirvana, às mudanças de membros da banda, aos processos criativos que culminaram numas das minhas canções preferidas, e num dos meus álbuns preferidos de sempre. Ajuda a perceber o que inspira a banda e a torna óptima. E é um despertar de uma paixão maior por música que dá vontade de ir ouvir todas as músicas preferidas de novo.

Sound City

I had heard wonders about this doc directed by Dave Grohl and was really curious to watch it. Studio City was a recording studio in Seattle where incredible artists and bands recorded albums that would change Music History. From Neil Young, to Fleetwood Mac, to Johnny Cash and notably Nirvana, who recorded the hugely influential Nevermind there. 
Tinha ouvido maravilhas sobre este documentário realizado pelo Dave Grohl e estava curiosa para o ver. Studio City era um estúdio de gravações em Seattle onde artistas e bandas incríveis gravaram álbuns que iriam mudar a História da Música. Desde Neil Young, a Fleetwood Mac, a Johnny Cash, e mesmo os Nirvana, que lá gravaram o incrível Nevermind.

The documentary talks to studio owners/managers, and artists who’d famously recorded there and takes us through the History of Sound City, from the early stages to the time it eventually closed. And importantly it looks affectionately at the Neve Console, the machine responsible for the production of all those great records – and what Dave Grohl did with it after the studio closed. Sound City makes you look at the evolution of music with a degree of nostalgia and sadness – but also hope, because there are still those who still believe in true, old school, quality music.

O documentário fala com donos/gerentes do estúdio e com artistas que lá gravaram, levando-nos pela História do Sound City, desde os primeiros dias à altura em que acabou por fechar. O que é importante é a forma afectuosa como olha para a Neve Console, a máquina responsável pela produção de todos os grandes álbuns lá gravados – e o que o Dave Grohl fez com ela depois do estúdio ter fechado. Sound City olha para a evolução da música com uma certa nostalgia e tristeza – mas também esperança, porque ainda há quem acredite na música verdadeira, à antiga e de qualidade.

Who the f**k is that guy

This oddly titled doc is a look at the life of Michael Alago, a gay Puerto Rican kid from Brooklyn who became “Mr Heavy Metal” when he signed and helped produce some of the most influential bands. He’s the man who signed Metallica to a major label, which led to the development of the amazing Master of Puppets album.

Este documentário com um título estranho, é um olhar sobre a vida de Michael Alago, um miúdo porto-riquenho gay que se tornou no “Sr Heavy Metal” depois de assinar e ajudar a produzir algumas das bandas mais importantes desse género musical. Foi o responsável por assinar os Metallica a uma companhia discográfica grande, que depois levou ao desenvolvimento do fantástico álbum Master of Puppets.

The irony of a small, gay, Puerto Rican kid growing up to become an icon of heavy metal, and an icon in NYC, makes for a really interesting story! Not just about music, but also the whole context of the time – the drugs, the alcohol, and the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. It’s different from the previous two, but it is an interesting watch!

A ironia de um miúdo pequeno, gay, vindo de Porto Rico, se tornar num ícone do heavy metal, num ícone de Nova Iorque, dá uma história bem interessante! Não só sobre música, mas sobre todo o contexto da altura – as drogas, o álcool e o começo da epidemia da SIDA. É diferente dos outros dois, mas é um documentário bem interessante!
