Career Girl Daily Academy

You may remember my post around the beginning of December last year, where I talked about the experience of attending the first ever Career Girl Academy. This Sunday I finally attended another of these inspiring events, after having been unable to attend the previous ones as I was either busy or out of the country.

Talvez se lembrem do meu post por volta do início de Dezembro do ano passado, onde falei sobre a experiência de ir à primeira Career Girl Academy. Este domingo pude finalmente ir a outro destes eventos inspiradores, já que não consegui ir aos últimos porque estava ou ocupada ou a viajar.

Career Girl Daily is a blog I have been following since around September 2015, when I came back to corporate life in London. It was a great source of motivation and strength then, and it continues to inspire me today not only for the content produced, but also for the events organised.

Já sigo o blog Career Girl Daily desde Setembro de 2015, quando voltei a Londres e a trabalhar cá. Na altura foi uma óptima fonte de força e motivação, e continua a inspirar-me hoje não só pelo conteúdo que produz, mas também pelos eventos que organiza!

So this past Sunday, bright and early, I got out of the house and headed to The Hoxton Shoreditch hotel, where the day of talks would take place. Here’s an overview of what was presented…

Então no último domingo, bem cedinho, saí de casa e dirigi-me ao hotel The Hoxton em Shoreditch, onde se iria realizar este dia de palestras. Aqui fica um pequeno resumo do que foi falado…

Talita Ferreira

Talita is a brilliant lady who used to be CFO of BMW, who talked about finding your “Inner Authentic Power”, which she addresses in the book she wrote. According to Talita it is important to inspire yourself through negative things at work, and to inspire others as well. 

Talita é uma senhora espectacular, que já foi CFO da BMW, que falou sobre encontrar o nosso “autêntico poder interior”, do qual fala no livro que escreveu. De acordo com a Talita, é importante inspirarmo-nos (e aos outros) para não sermos afectados por coisas negativas no trabalho.

In order to get out of a “negativity spiral”, we need to prepare for change, i.e we need to be aware of ourselves (of what triggers our negativity spiral), and our core values, fears and purpose.

Para sair da “espiral de negatividade”, precisamos de estar preparados para a mudança, ou seja, ter noção do que nos faz entrar na espiral negativa e dos nossos valores, medos e motivadores centrais.

Talita’s key point was that you need to be true to who you are, and work towards your goal (whatever it may be) by taking bold, imperfect steps now. This was the best quote from the day for me. You need to start somewhere, it doesn’t matter if it’s a small step or giant leap!

O ponto mais importante que nos foi dito pela Talita foi que devemos ser autênticos e trabalhar para o nosso objectivo (seja ele qual for) dando passos arriscados mas imperfeitos agora. Precisamos de começar em algum lado, não interessa se é um pequeno passo ou um salto gigante!

The first talk was motivating, inspiring and overall a super positive way to get the day started.

A primeira palestra foi motivadora, inspiradora e no geral uma forma super positiva de começar o dia.

Beluga Bean

In fairness, I wasn’t a fan of the second talk. We had two speakers from a company called Beluga Bean: Renee who founded Planet Organic, and her business partner. I was expecting an inspiring talk on skills you need to be an entrepreneur but instead this ended up being more of a sales pitch for the course they have, with little information to take away. 

Para ser franca não gostei muito da segunda palestra. Tivemos dois apresentadores de uma empresa chamada Beluga Bean: a Renee que fundou as lojas Planet Organic e o seu sócio. Estava à espera de uma apresentação sobre as coisas que eram necessárias para abrir um negócio, mas na realidade foi mais uma apresentação para tentar recrutar pessoas para o curso que eles fazem e pouco houve a retirar.

Pavan Henna Bar

Pavan was the hit of the day for many of us attending – she’s so lovely and a natural speaker that it became almost like listening to a friend talk about her success. Pavan is the world’s fastest Henna artist and she opened the first Henna bar in Selfridges, so she was giving us a talk on how to take your passion and make it into a business.

Para muitas de nós, a Pavan foi o sucesso do dia – é tão simpática e tão natural a falar que se tornou quase como ouvir uma amiga a falar sobre o seu sucesso. Pavan é a artista de Henna mais rápida do Mundo e abriu um Henna Bar no Selfridges, então veio falar-nos de como pegar numa paixão e torná-la num negócio.

If you have a goal, Pavan said, you have to focus on it, keep working, educate yourself, but don’t tell too many people at the risk of their doubts putting you off. You also need to build good relationships: be nice to people and they’ll go out of their way to help you, and you create a stronger network. 

Se tivermos um objectivo, disse a Pavan, temos de nos focar nele, continuar a trabalhar, aprender, mas não contar a demasiadas pessoas para evitar que as dúvidas deles nos tirem o entusiasmo. Também é importante criar boas relações: ser simpático e gentil para as pessoas leva a que nos queiram ajudar e assim criamos uma rede mais forte.

Things don’t always go to plan, but that’s ok – it might end up being a detour that leads you to something better. And you have to persevere, know your end goal and keep going – because in the end, if that’s what it is, it will be ok!

As coisas nem sempre acontecem como previsto, mas isso é normal – pode ser um desvio que nos leve a coisas melhores. E temos de insistir, saber o objectivo que temos e seguir em frente – porque no fim de contas se assim for , vai correr bem!

The London Fashion Agency

Rosie from The London Fashion Agency came to talk to us about building a business with virtually no money. Rosie started LFA from her bedroom in London based on knowledge she had gained of PR by interning everywhere that would have her and has now gone to build a second business. 

A Rosie da London Fashion Agency veio falar connosco sobre como criar um negócio sem praticamente dinheiro nenhum. A Rosie começou a LFA do quarto dela em Londres, baseando-se em conhecimentos de RP que tinha de vários estágios que tinha feito, e agora até já criou um segundo negócio.

Her focus was on being resourceful, learning how to do things yourself or learning how to trade and barter for them!

O foco da Rosie está muito em ser desenrascado, aprender a fazer as coisas por nós ou a negociar trocas por algo de que precisamos.

It is important, Rosie said, to network and stay in touch with people! It is also crucial to perfect your product/service, know your market and customers, and nurturing your team. And finally – stay true to yourself and your idea.

É importante, disse a Rosie, conhecer pessoas no meio onde queremos trabalhar e manter contacto! É também crucial aperfeiçoar o produto/serviço que oferecemos, conhecer o mercado e o consumidor e cuidar da nossa equipa. Finalmente – é importante mantermo-nos fiéis à nossa ideia é a nós mesmos.

For me, the key takeaways from the different talks were can be summarised in a few words: authenticity, passion, relationships, perseverance. 

Para mim, os pontos essenciais das várias palestras resumem-se em poucas palavras: autenticidade, paixão, relações, perseverança. 

I came out of the Academy feeling really motivated and inspired! Looking forward to putting some of these tips to work. And it was amazing to meet such inspiring people that were attending, and to be able to network a bit myself too!

Saí da Academia a sentir-me super motivada e inspirada! Estou cheia de vontade de por algumas destas dicas em prática. Também foi óptimo conhecer pessoas super inspiradores que estavam a assistir, e poder eu também criar uma rede mais forte!
