Hi everyone, happy Friday! This week’s second post is a suggestion if you’re planning on having a lazy bank holiday weekend: the new Freeform series, The Bold Type.
Olá a todos! O segundo post desta semana é uma sugestão caso queiram ter um fim-de-semana de preguiça: a nova série do canal americano Freeform, The Bold Type.
The series follows three best friends who work in different departments of Scarlet Magazine (a Cosmopolitan inspired publication) and deal with the normal struggles of working women.
A série segue três melhores amigas que trabalham em diferentes áreas da revista Scarlet (inspirada na Cosmopolitan) e que lidam com as dificuldades que afectam mulheres profissionais.
But where this series shines is that while it looks like it’s going to be similar to The Devil Wears Prada, it’s not at all. When you expect the editor to be mad, she is supportive. When you expect people to backstab, they help, encourage, empower. It’s absolutely refreshing, and really uplifting and motivating! So here are the reasons why you’ll love binge watching The Bold Type.
Mas onde esta série brilha é que enquanto parece que vai ser parecida com O Diabo Veste Prada, não é de todo. Quando esperamos que a editora se zangue, ela apoia. Quando esperamos que alguém esfaqueie alguém pelas costas, ajudam, encorajam, dão força. É refrescante e muito motivador! Por isso aqui ficam as razões pelas quais acho que vão adorar devorar The Bold Type.
#1 It’s full of strong female characters
The three main characters are very different, but incredible in their ways. Jane has just become a writer for the magazine and is working hard to find her voice as a journalist while struggling with difficult issues; Kat is the social media director who is figuring out her sexual identity while fighting for what she believes in; and Sutton is the determined girl who dreams of working in Fashion – and even cancels a date with a dreamy guy to work on her career, how refreshing and inspiring is that?!
As três personagens principais são muito diferentes mas incríveis à sua maneira. A Jane tornou-se recentemente escritora para a revista e trabalha no duro para encontrar a sua voz como jornalista, enquanto lida com questões pessoais difíceis; a Kat é a directora das redes sociais que está a tentar encontrar a sua identidade sexual enquanto luta por aquilo em que acredita; e a Sutton é a rapariga determinada que sonha trabalhar no departamento de Moda – e até cancela um encontro com um homem lindo para trabalhar na carreira – não é refrescante e inspirador?!
Even the boss is amazing: Jaclyn is assertive, knowledgeable, but kind, understanding, caring and supportive. There is an incredible amount of support between women in this show and that is such a welcome change!
Até a chefe é espectacular: a Jaclyn é assertiva, tem muito conhecimento, mas é gentil, compreensiva, preocupa-se e dá apoio. Há imenso apoio entre mulheres nesta série e isso é uma mudança muito bem-vinda!
#2 It approaches important subjects naturally
From sexuality, to feminism, to politics and health issues, the show addresses them all, and it does so in a positive and respectful way. The issues are discussed openly, with a positive, almost educational element behind it.
Desde a sexualidade, ao feminismo, à política e a questões de saúde, a série fala de tudo, e fá-lo de forma super positiva e respeitosa. Estas questões são discutidas de forma aberta, com um elemento positivo, quase educativo, por trás.
It’s also great to see a teen/young adult drama that deals openly with the issues of starting a career and the pressures that come with adulthood (that “don’t grow up, it’s a trap” thing? Totally true).
Também é óptimo ver uma série para adolescentes/jovens adultos a lidar abertamente com as dificuldades de quem começa uma carreira e as pressões que surgem com o ser adulto (aquela história de “não cresçam, é uma armadilha”? Completamente verdade).
#3 Squad Goals
Jane, Kat and Sutton are besties that value their friendship above all else. They’re there for one another and offer useful advice and a shoulder to lean on whenever the others need it. They’re, as they mention in one episode, each other’s safety net. And that is the most important thing in the world. Watching this, particularly the ‘safety net’ moment, has made me realise how much I value my two best girl friends and how so often I would have been lost without them.
A Jane, a Kat e a Sutton são melhores amigas que valorizam a amizade acima de tudo. Estão lá umas para as outras e dão conselhos úteis e um ombro amigo quando as outras precisam. São, como dizem num dos episódios, a rede de segurança umas das outras. E isso é a coisa mais importante do Mundo. Ver isto, especialmente a parte da “rede de segurança”, fez-me pensar na importância das minhas duas melhores amigas e de como, muitas vezes, não seria nada sem elas.
#4 It’s motivating!
My friend A told me to (in fact almost made me!) watch this show a couple of months ago when I was feeling a bit sad. And the beauty of it is that it motivates you. It picks you right out of whatever slump you may be in to give you a mood boost worthy of a Rocky training montage. Everything from the cool office setting, to the friendships, the support, the topics dealt with, etc., makes me want to be more productive, more active.
A minha amiga A disse-me para (aliás quase me obrigou!) ver esta série há uns meses quando estava a sentir em baixo. E a beleza da coisa é que motiva. Puxa-nos para cima e tira-nos de qualquer buraco onde estejamos, para nos dar um boost do estilo de uma montagem de treino do Rocky. Tudo desde o escritório cheio de pinta, às amizades, ao apoio, os tópicos referidos, etc., me faz querer ser mais activa e mais produtiva.
