A day in Oxford

Hi everyone! Hope you’re having a lovely weekend 🙂 In today’s post I’m taking you to Oxford, the beautiful university city perfect for a day trip from London.

Olá a todos! Espero que estejam a ter um óptimo fim-de-semana 🙂 No post de hoje levo-vos a Oxford, a lindíssima cidade universitária perfeita para uma viagem de um dia a partir de Londres.

Having taken the train from Paddington, I got to Oxford around 10:20am. My first stop was Turl Street Kitchen. I’d seen this recommended online and headed there for coffee and food (a danish) before I began exploring. The space is so cool (the floor tiles are to die for), and it’s got great service and equally great coffee and pastries. It’s a good space to hang out and read a book or even do some work – no wonder it’s a favourite among students!

Depois de apanhar o comboio em Paddington, cheguei a Oxford pelas 10:20h. A minha primeira paragem foi o café Turk Street Kitchen. Já o tinha visto em recomendações na internet e dirigi-me lá para um café e qualquer coisa para comer (um bolo) antes de começar a explorar. O espaço é giríssimo (os azulejos do chão são de cair para o lado), e tem óptimo serviço e café e bolos igualmente bons. É um óptimo sítio para ficar a ler um livro ou a trabalhar – não admira que seja um favorito dos estudantes!

I started my tour at Trinity College which was open and charged £2 to allow you to visit the quads – which is totally worth it because they are stunning!

Comecei a minha vista no Trinity College que estava aberto e cobrava £2 para entrar e ver os jardins – o que vale imenso a pena porque são maravilhosos!

Next up was the University Church of St Mary the Virgin. I was determined to face my fear of heights and climb up to the tower to admire (and photograph) the incredible view of the Radcliffe Camera and the surrounding colleges. And so I did, shaking like a leaf going up and down the stairs. But the view was totally worth it! You have to wait around 15 minutes to be allowed up because it’s a really tiny staircase and there’s not much space at the top but it’s worth the wait.

Seguiu-se a Igreja Universitária da Virgem Maria. Estava decidida a ultrapassar o meu medo de alturas e subir à torre para ver (e fotografar) a vista incrível da Radcliffe Camera com as faculdades à volta. E foi isso que fiz, a tremer que nem varas verdes nas escadas. Mas a vista valeu bem a pena! É preciso esperar cerca de 15 minutos para poder subir porque a escada é minúscula e não há muito espaço no cimo, mas vale a pena esperar.

The Bodleian library was my next stop – I bought a ticket for 1pm guided tour that took the group through the Divinity School and the Duke Humphrey’s Library. This was a highlight not just because the library has been there since the 17th century, but also because it inspired several sets for the Harry Potter films!

A Biblioteca Bodleian foi a minha paragem seguinte – comprei um bilhete para a visita guinada das 13h que nos mostrou a Divinity School e a Duke Humphrey’s Library. Visitar estes locais foi um ponto alto não só porque a biblioteca está ali desde o século XVII, mas também porque inspirou vários cenários da saga Harry Potter!

I stopped for lunch at The Handle Bar, a very cool restaurant and coffee shop that’s located above a bike shop and has brilliant decor. I’ve been loving choosing more veggie based foods recently so I picked the sweet potato burger with avocado and lemon mayo – it was divine! So filling and delicious.

Parei para almoçar no Handle Bar, um restaurante e café cheio de pinta que fica por cima de uma loja de bicicletas e tem uma decoração genial. Tenho estado a adorar comidas mais à base de legumes e por isso escolhi o hamburger de batata doce com abacate e maionese de limão – estava divinal! Tão delicioso e reconfortante.

For dessert, I stopped by G&D’s on the way to Christ Church college. I got a cone with two delicious scoops (Daim and Ferrero Rocher flavoured) and headed to the meadow. What a treat that was, enjoying a lovely ice cream in a beautiful park admiring such a grand, historic building!

Para a sobremesa passei pela G&D’s a caminho do Christ Church college. Pedi um cone com dois sabores (Daim e Ferrero Rocher) e segui para o parque. Que maravilha, comer um óptimo gelado num parque lindo a admirar um edifício tão grandioso e histórico!

There was a queue to get into Christ Church so I ended up going online on my phone and buying a ticket that way, which I’d recommend because it cuts the waiting time. And off I went, to finally visit the place that inspired Hogwarts’ Great Hall.

Havia fila para entrar no Christ Church college por isso acabei indo à net no telemóvel e comprar o bilhete dessa forma, o que recomendo porque se espera muito menos. E lá fui, para ver finalmente o sítio que inspirou o Great Hall de Hogwarts.

Christ Church’s Great Hall is magnificent, and so is the grand staircase leading up to it (also featured in Harry Potter). It was so cool to see the Hall with the tables set up for visitors!

O Great Hall de Christ Church é magnífico, tal como o é a escadaria que lá vai dar (e que também aparece nos filmes do Harry Potter). Foi tão giro ver o Great Hall com as mesas postas para os visitantes!

The final stop of my day in Oxford was the home of the Natural History and the Pitt Rivers Museums, which share the same building. It is said that visits to this museum inspired the Dodo in Alice in Wonderland, so it was something I had to see (Lewis Carroll, pen name for Charles Dodgson, was famously a student at Oxford)!

A minha última paragem no meu dia em Oxford foi o edifício onde ficam os museus de História Natural e Pitt Rivers. Dizem que foram visitas a este museu que inspiraram o Dodo na Alice no País das Maravilhas, por isso tinha de ir ver (Lewis Carroll, pseudónimo de Charles Dodgson, foi um dos mais famosos alunos de Oxford)!

After this I headed back to London, with tired feet but an excited mind, happy to have finally visited the place where so many great names studied. And, obviously, to have been in the places that inspired so much of the Harry Potter sets – I was a very happy nerd on the train ride home! Depois disto regressei a Londres, com pés cansados mas uma mente feliz de ter finalmente visitado o sítio onde estudaram tantos grandes nomes. E, obviamente, de ter estado nos sítios que inspiraram tantos dos cenários da saga Harry Potter – no comboio de regresso a casa eu era uma nerd feliz! Um agradecimento especial à minha amiga T que (é mega inteligente, andou em Oxford e) me deu as melhores dicas!
