Visiting Kew Gardens

Firstly, let me just say that I am still shocked and saddened by the events of last night, 3rd June, here in London. It is hard to process something like this, and I’d like to send my thoughts to anyone affected and my thanks to the Emergency Services who continue to amaze with their bravery. Life must resume, we cannot live in fear and won’t give way to hate. I truly believe that beauty and most of all kindness should be the response to such events. So here’s something that will hopefully brighten up your day. Stay safe, be kind.

Antes de mais deixem-me dizer que ainda estou chocada e entristecida com o que se passou ontem à noite, dia 3 de Junho, aqui em Londres. É difícil de digerir algo assim, e quero aproveitar para dizer que estou a pensar em todos os que foram afectados e para agradecer aos Serviços de Emergência que continuam a espantar com a sua coragem. A vida tem de continuar, não vamos viver com medo nem deixar o ódio tomar conta de nós. Acredito mesmo que a beleza e especialmente a bondade devem ser a resposta a eventos como este. Por isso aqui fica algo que espero que anime os vossos dias. Fiquem seguros e sejam gentis.

Hello! 🙂 In today’s post I’m telling you a bit more about my visit to Kew Gardens, aka the Royal Botanic Gardens, in Richmond last week.
Olá! 🙂 No post de hoje conto-vos mais sobre a minha visita aos Kew Gardens, o Jardim Botânico Real, em Richmond na semana passada.

Though I’d often heard about it and knew it wasn’t far from me, I hadn’t gotten round to visit. And so last week, to get out of the house and make the most of the warm weather on the long weekend, I went online, bought a ticket (they’re £14 for an adult) and headed over. On that note, I’d definitely recommend getting a ticket online as I managed to skip quite a queue to get in that way!

Embora já tivesse ouvido falar neles e soubesse que não ficavam muito longe de mim, ainda nunca os tinha visitado. Por isso, na semana passada, para sair de casa e aproveitar o tempo quente no fim-de-semana prolongado, fui à net, comprei um bilhete (£14 por um bilhete de adulto) e lá fui eu. Nessa onda de ideias, recomendo mesmo comprar bilhete online já que fazendo isso consegui evitar ficar numa fila considerável.

First on my list of places to see was the Palm House. I mean a whole greenhouse full of beautiful palm trees from around the world? I had to see it! But boy was it humid! And also wonderful, but mostly humid (just so you’re prepared). But that is the perfect environment for these magnificent tropical plants to thrive in and thrive they do – they’re so impressive! And the greenhouse itself, with beautiful ironwork details on the staircases, etc, is worth visiting.

O primeiro local a visitar foi a Palm House. Quer dizer, uma estufa cheia de palmeiras lindas vindas dos quatro cantos do mundo? Tinha de ver isso! Mas bolas que é húmido! Também é maravilhoso, mas especialmente húmido (só para irem preparados). Mas esse é o ambiente perfeito para estas magníficas plantas tropicais prosperarem e bem o fazem – são impressionantes! E a estufa em si, com ferro trabalhado cheio de detalhes nas escadas e não só, vale a pena ver.

I then headed to Kew Palace, where George III lived with Queen Charlotte and his daughters. The current Palace was part of a larger complex and is known as the Dutch House – the exterior is incredibly colourful and that makes it so gorgeous!

Depois dirigi-me ao Kew Palace, onde viveu George III com a Rainha Charlotte e as suas filhas. O Palácio actual fazia parte de um complexo maior e é conhecido como a Casa Holandesa – a fachada é super colorida e torna o Palácio mais bonito!

Nearby are The Royal Kitchens, where you can learn more about what it took to run the royal household and even learn how to prepare Georgian meals (one Sunday per month). This was a highlight for me, as I absolutely love visiting the kitchens of historical buildings.

Bastante perto ficam as Cozinhas Reais, onde é possível aprender sobre o que era preciso para gerir a casa Real e até aprender como preparar refeições da altura de George III (a um domingo por mês). As cozinhas foram um grande destaque para mim, que adoro visitar as cozinhas de edifícios históricos.

After walking along the Orangerie and admiring the beautiful roses nearby, I headed to the Princess of Wales Conservatory – which was a delight because of the section dedicated to the desert with all of the cacti and succulents you can think of. I wasn’t expecting this at all and was amazed by how striking it was. 

Depois de caminhar junto à Orangerie e admirar as fantásticas rosas lá perto, fui ao Princess of Wales Conservatory – que foi uma delícia com a secção dedicada ao deserto com todos os cactos que possam imaginar. Não estava à espera e fiquei impressionada.

By this time I was quite exhausted from the muggy heat so I decided to leave the other side of the Gardens, with Temperate House and The Pagoda (both were closed), for a next visit. It’s a good excuse to come back – not that I really needed one.

Por esta altura estava cansada do calor húmido então decidi deixar o outro lado dos jardins, com a Temperate House e o Pagode Chinês (que estavam fechados), para uma próxima visita. É uma boa desculpa para voltar, não que fosse precisa.
