May Reading List

Good morning everyone! 🙂 Today’s post is an overview of the books I would like to read over the month of May. I’d love to make this a more regular thing – there is nothing quite like finding a good book, devouring it in days and then being able to tell someone about it! 

Bom dia a todos! 🙂 O post de hoje é um pequeno resumo dos livros que tenho para ler durante este mês de Maio. Adorava tornar isto numa coisa mais regular – não há nada como encontrar um bom livro, devorá-lo em poucos dias e depois poder falar sobre ele a alguém!

I love reading novels that take my imagination somewhere new, and I’ve been loving reading books in French to keep up my use of the language. The next challenge is moving to books in Italian. Let’s get right into this month’s list.

Adoro ler romances que levem a minha imaginação a sítios novos e tenho adorado ler livros em Francês para manter a prática da língua. O próximo desafio é começar a ler em Italiano. Comecemos então com a lista deste mês.

#1 Re-vive L’Empereur

This is the book I am currently reading. It was recommended to me by a lovely lady at Librairie La Page in South Kensington when I asked for something light and enjoyable. 

Este é o livro que estou a ler no momento. Foi-me recomendado por uma senhora simpática na Librairie La Page em South Kensington quando pedi que me sugerisse um livro leve e divertido.

I’d never read something like this before! About what it would be like if Napoleon Bonaparte resurfaced in the present day, in a world scarred by terrorist attacks, it is absurd and hilarious in all the good ways. 

Nunca tinha lido nada assim! Imaginando como seria se Napoleão Bonaparte reaparecesse nos dias de hoje, num mundo marcado por ataques terroristas, o livro é perfeitamente absurdo e hilariante.

It is also quite an unassuming satire of modern culture which is a very interesting aspect! I’m really enjoying it – found myself laughing out loud in the tube reading it and everything!

Também acaba por ser uma crítica subtil à cultura moderna, o que é um aspecto bastante interessante! Estou a adorar – até já dei por mim a rir alto no metro a ler isto!

#2 Il Giardino Persiano

The first of the books I plan to try reading in Italian was a present from my Dad on our trip to Rome and recommended by the guy at Fahrenheit 451 in Campo de’ Fiori. 

O primeiro dos livros que tenciono ler em italiano foi-me oferecido pelo meu Pai na viagem a Roma e recomendado pelo senhor da Fahrenheit 451 no Campo de’ Fiori.

It is an autobiographical novel in which the author tells of her family’s move to Tehran, where her father was going to be Ambassador. This was the early 80s and Ayatollah Khomeini was showing his power everywhere. The story is told through the innocent eyes of a child who just enjoys the beautiful garden of the Embassy. I’m so excited to dig into this one!

É um romance autobiográfico no qual a autora fala sobre a mudança da sua família para Teerão, onde o seu Pai ia ser Embaixador. Estávamos no início dos anos 80 e o Ayatollah Khomeini mostrava o seu poder por todo o lado. A história é contada da perspectiva inocente de uma criança que apenas fica encantada com os lindos jardins da Embaixada. Estou super entusiasmada por começar este!

#3 Their Finest

I’m back to books in English for this next one. I heard about it after seeing the trailer for the movie adaption but it intrigued me, so I want to read the book first – it seems right up my alley! It tells the story of Catrin Cole, an ad lady who in 1940 was asked to write propaganda for the UK’s war effort. 

Neste último volto aos livros em Inglês. Já tinha ouvido falar nele depois de ver o trailer da sua adaptação ao cinema, mas a história deixou-me curiosa, então quis ler o livro primeiro – parece mesmo o meu género! Conta a história de Catrin Cole, uma publicitária que em 1940 foi recrutado para fazer a propaganda para o Reino Unido durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.

A book about creating propaganda during WWII, a period I’m so fascinated about, with interesting characters and a dash of humour is all I need!

Um livro sobre criar propaganda na 2a Grande Guerra, um período que me fascina, com personagens interessantes e um toque de humor é mesmo o que eu preciso!
