Hello! 🙂 Today’s post is a guide to the Eternal City – a few tips from my recent visit with my parents, in which we discovered some amazing things in the Italian capital!

Where to Stay // Onde Ficar
If you’re planning to visit all the historical sites and explore Rome mainly on foot, it is worth staying in the Centro Storico, near the Pantheon or Piazza Navona. For this trip we stayed at the Hotel Navona, which is clean, comfortable and at a great location – but that’s about it, as any extras were pretty basic.
Se estiverem a planear visitar os locais históricos e explorar Roma maioritariamente a pé, vale a pena ficar no Centro Storico, perto do Panteão ou da Piazza Navona. Para esta viagem ficámos no Hotel Navona, que é limpo, confortável e tem uma óptima localização – mas é basicamente só isso, os extras são bastante básicos.
What to Visit // O que Visitar
Rome is one of those cities where everywhere you look there’s something stunning to visit. Wandering around and exploring is definitely worth it.
Roma é uma daquelas cidades onde há coisas incríveis para visitar por todo o lado. Passear por lá e explorar vale bem a pena.
From beautiful buildings to historical monuments and incredible remains of the Roman Empire, it’s all there and it is all an absolute must see!
Desde edifícios bonitos a monumentos históricos e incríveis pedaços do Império Romano, está tudo lá e é tudo imperdível!
To visit the Vatican, I’d highly recommend booking a tour – we booked a ‘skip the line’ tour with City Wonders through Viator. The tour guide was great and really informative, and it did what it said: helped us skip the huge queues!
Para visitar o Vaticano, recomendo vivamente marcar uma visita guiada – nós marcámos uma chamada ‘skip the line’ com a empresa City Wonders, através do Viator. A nossa guia era excelente e super informativa, e a visita fez o que prometia: ajudou-nos a evitar as filas gigantes!
For the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum, I’d recommend booking tickets in advance and getting there close to opening time. We collected our tickets straight away when we arrived at 8:45, but noticed the queues were huge by the time we left the Colosseum later!
Para o Coliseu, o Palatino e o Fórum Romano, recomendo marcar bilhete com antecedência e chegar lá o mais perto possível da hora de abertura. Nós fomos buscar os nossos perto das 8:45h e depois quando saímos do Coliseu reparamos que a fila estava já enorme!
Palatine Hill and the Forum were without a doubt my favourite things to visit. They are monumental, breathtaking and such a great illustration of where we came from – this was the start of so many of Europe’s societies, mainly those whose languages come from Latin, like Portuguese.
O Palatino e o Fórum Romano foram as coisas que mais gostei de visitar, sem sombra de dúvida. São monumentais, de cortar a respiração e uma óptima ilustração do que originou as nossas sociedades – especialmente aquelas cujas línguas originam do latim, como a Portuguesa.
Where to eat // Onde Comer
Luckily all the restaurants I had found in my pre-trip research were big hits – but of all of them for me the favourite was the Santa Lucia, just outside Piazza Navona. It’s so central but in a little square (Largo Febo) that is rather quiet and it has both the most bucolic outdoor space and delicious food.
Por sorte, todos os restaurantes que encontrei na minha pesquisa antes da viagem foram grandes êxitos – mas o melhor de todos para mim foi o Santa Lucia, perto da Piazza Navona. É tão central mas numa praça pequena (Largo Febo) que é sossegada e tem ao mesmo tempo um espaço exterior bucólico e comida deliciosa.
Other amazing finds were the Taverna dei Fori Imperiali (a fantastic restaurant near the Roman Forum), and Hostaria da Pietro (delicious food near Piazza del Popolo)!
Outras descobertas fantásticas foram a Taverna dei Fori Imperiali (um restaurante fantástico perto do Fórum Romano) e Hostaria da Pietro (comida deliciosa perto da Piazza del Popolo)!
For breakfast nothing beats a good cappuccino and a cornetto – La Bottega del Café in the Piazza Madonna dei Monti was the best place we tried! Home made cornetti, great service and such a great location!
Para o pequeno-almoço nada melhor que um cappuccino e um cornetto (a versão italiana de um croissant) – La Bottega del Café na Piazza Madonna dei Monti foi o melhor que experimentámos! Cornetti feitos lá, com óptimo serviço e uma excelente localização!
And then there is ice cream. The favourite was Gelateria del Teatro which wasn’t overly busy and had the best authentic wafer cones and delicious gelato flavours! I’m still dreaming of how incredible the strawberry scoop I had was…
E depois vem o gelado. O nosso favorito foi o Gelateria del Teatro que não estava demasiado cheio de gente e tinha os melhores cones de wafer e os mais deliciosos sabores de gelato! Ainda sonho com a bola de gelado de morango que lá comi…
Where to Shop // Onde ir às Compras
If you keep an eye out, Rome is full of shops with great pieces. We accidentally stumbled upon the Marta Ray store, that sold the most beautiful ballet flats! I’m so in love with the ones I bought!
Se estiverem atentos, Roma tem lojas com coisas giras por todo o lado. Nós passamos por acaso pela loja da marca Marta Ray, que vende sapatos lindos! Estou apaixonada pelas sabrinas que lá comprei!
For books, Fahrenheit 451 (recommended by my aunt and uncle) in Campo de’ Fiori was a great find – a small bookshop with a great selection of new and second hand books and very helpful staff.
Para livros, Fahrenheit 451 (recomendada pelos meus tios) no Campo de’ Fiori, foi uma óptima descoberta – uma livraria pequena com uma óptima selecção de livros novos e em segunda mão e um atendimento excelente.
Explore // Explorar
Exploring the neighbourhoods of Trastevere and Monti was another highlight, and admiring their quaint, colourful streets that look straight out of a movie an absolute dream.
Explorar os bairros de Trastevere e Monti foi outro destaque é admirar as suas ruas típicas e cheias de cor que parecem saídas de um filme foi um sonho.
Something we found really fun was retracing the steps of movies set in Rome. From La Dolce Vita, to Roman Holiday and even Angels & Demons it was really great fun to see the places they were filmed and/or set in. Especially magical to see the places Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck filmed Roman Holiday – Via Margutta, for example, looks just as beautiful and special as it did in the film.
Uma coisa que achámos bem divertida foi andar a ver as localizações de filmes passados em Roma. Desde La Dolce Vita, a Férias Romanas e até Anjos & Demónios, foi super divertido ver os sítios onde se passaram e/ou foram filmados. Foi especialmente mágico visitar os sítios onde Audrey Hepburn e Gregory Peck filmaram Férias Romanas – a Via Margutta, por exemplo, é tão bonita e especial agora como o era no filme.
