Most of the travelling that I do is based on city breaks around Europe (and occasionally beyond), either alone or with family. I’ve become quite a fan of a long weekend exploring new cities, and have established a pretty good system to set up travel itineraries, so I thought I’d share my process with you.

Tenho-me tornado grande fã de um fim-de-semana prolongado a explorar novas cidades, e estabeleci um sistema bastante bom para criar itinerários, por isso pensei partilhar o meu processo convosco.
Travel
I usually start by looking on SkyScanner for flights for the days I have off work, trying to find the cheaper options. But I don’t always go with the absolute cheapest simply because I like the convenience of choosing the easiest airport to get to, as well as the most reasonably priced flight. So I’m happy finding a bit of a happy medium in terms of price and convenience, and SkyScanner is still a huge help.
Costumo começar por procurar voos no SkyScanner para os dias que tirei de férias no escritório, em busca das opções mais baratas. Mas nem sempre vou pela opção mais barata de todas, simplesmente porque gosto da conveniência de escolher o aeroporto onde é mais fácil de chegar, para além dos voos com melhores preços. Por isso fico satisfeita de encontrar um intermédio entre preço e conveniência, e o SkyScanner continua a ser uma óptima ajuda.
I always do some research as to how to get from the airport to where I’m staying – it’s much better to arrive somewhere knowing what you’re looking for, than to arrive unprepared! More often than not I will take a train/subway from the airport to the city centre and then walk from there if the hotel isn’t too far, or take a taxi.
Faço sempre alguma pesquisa para descobrir como vou chegar do aeroporto até ao sítio onde vou ficar – é muito melhor chegar a um sítio já sabendo do que vamos à procura, do que chegar sem estar preparado! O mais comum é apanhar um comboio ou metro até ao centro da cidade e depois ou ir a pé se o hotel não for muito longe, ou apanhar um táxi.
Citymapper is one of my all time favourite apps day-to-day, and becomes even handier when you are abroad – it already includes so many cities and is a godsend to help you find your way around! It requires a data connection or Wi-Fi, but it is well worth it, especially if you’re not familiar with the language.
Citymapper é uma das minhas apps preferidas no dia-a-dia e torna-se ainda mais útil quando estamos no estrangeiro – já inclui tantas estações e é um achado para indicar o caminho! Precisa de ligação de dados ou de Wi-Fi, mas vale imenso a pena, especialmente se não conhecerem bem a língua.
Somewhere to stay
I am an early riser, especially when I travel, and because of that I end up doing a lot of walking – and end up spending a fair bit of time resting in the hotel. So I like to find one that I enjoy, and one that I feel safe in as well, especially when I’m travelling solo.
Levanto-me sempre com as galinhas, especialmente quando viajo e por isso acabo por andar imenso – e por passar um bom bocado de tempo a descansar no hotel. Por isso gosto de escolher um que seja agradável e onde me sinta segura também, especialmente quando viajo sozinha.
I usually start my hotel search on Trivago and/or TripAdvisor – both of which have filters that allow you to narrow down by rating, price or distance to centre.
A pesquisa de hotéis começa normalmente no Trivago ou no TripAdvisor – ambos com filtros que permitem limitar a pesquisa por ranking, preço e distância até ao centro.
What I have also done is look for hotels I’ve seen on posts by one of my favourite bloggers (if I can afford them). I did this on my last city break to Paris, and was really pleased!
Outra coisa que também já fiz foi procurar hotéis que vi em posts das minhas bloggers preferidas (se tiverem preços razoáveis). Fiz isto no meu último city break em Paris e fiquei super satisfeita!
Another great option is to do a quick google of ’boutique hotels in…’ – there are usually a few options that are very central, reasonably priced and super pretty!
Outra óptima opção é fazer uma rápida pesquisa no Google por ‘hotéis boutique em…’ – normalmente aparecem umas quantas opções que são centrais, com bons preços e bem giras!
What to see and do
My first step for this stuff is always Pinterest. A few searches for ‘What to do in…’ bring up the must see places and my itinerary always starts from there. I usually also check with family and friends who have been to these cities what they recommend, which is always helpful.
O meu primeiro ponto de pesquisa para estas coisas é sempre o Pinterest. Umas quantas pesquisas por ‘o que fazer em…’ mostram os principais sítios a visitar e o meu itinerário começa sempre por aí. Normalmente também falo com amigos e família que já tenham visitado estas cidades para ver o que recomendam, o que ajuda sempre.
Because time is of the essence in these trips, I like to plan my days around the geographical areas of the places I want to visit. For this, I’ve recently discovered Ulmon, an app that has maps that can be made available offline (for several cities too). You can add the different things you want to see to the list and it shows you on the map where they are – making it far easier to plan an itinerary!
Porque o tempo não abunda nestas viagens, gosto de planear os meus dias à volta das zonas geográficas dos sítios que quero visitar. Para isto, descobri recentemente uma app chamada Ulmon, que tem mapas que podem ser usados offline (para várias cidades). Podemos adicionar as coisas que queremos ver a uma lista e a app mostra-as no mapa – tornando muito mais fácil planear o itinerário!
Because I am a big fan of films, I always try to find films that are set in the cities I am visiting, so that I can watch before I go. Some examples: Amélie for Paris, Breakfast at Tiffany’s for New York, Roman Holiday for Rome. Finding the locations of filming is something I genuinely enjoy when visiting a new city.
Porque adoro cinema, tento sempre encontrar filmes que se passem nas cidades que vou visitar para poder ver antes de ir. Alguns exemplos: Amélie Poulain para Paris, Breakfast at Tiffany’s para Nova Iorque, Roman Holiday para Roma. Encontrar os locais de filmagem é algo que adoro fazer quando visito uma nova cidade.
And then, again, come the blogs: I always visit World of Wanderlust to search for Brooke’s tips on a city I’m about to visit, as well as the blogs and Instagrams of What Olivia Did, Wish Wish Wish, The Anna Edit and Paris in Four Months. These ladies are my absolute favourites and have such great taste, so if they’ve been, I know I can trust their recommendations!
