4 days in Rome

Hello! 🙂 I thought it would be a good idea to share the itinerary my parents and I had in Rome last week – it was a pretty comprehensive one and we saw all the major sights in a short amount of time – hope you find it useful.

Olá! 🙂 Pensei que seria boa ideia partilhar o itinerário que eu e os meus pais fizemos em Roma na semana passada – foi bastante completo e vimos tudo o que queríamos em pouco tempo – espero que o achem útil!

Day 1 – Centro Storico

Once you get to Rome, head to the train station and get the Leonardo train, that gets you to central Rome in 32 minutes. Then taxi it to the hotel.

Ao chegar a Roma, dirijam-se à estação de comboios do aeroporto e apanhem o comboio Leonardo, que vos leva até à estação central de Roma em 32 minutos. Depois taxi até ao hotel.

Take some time to explore Piazza Navona and stop for lunch at Santa Lucia, the incredible restaurant in Largo Febo.

Aproveitem para explorar a Piazza Navona durante um bocado e depois parem para almoçar no Santa Lucia, o incrível restaurante no Largo Febo.

Then head over to the Pantheon and make sure to go in to be marvelled by the cupola and the skylight in the oldest church in Rome. Walk through the colouful streets and stop at the Sant’Antonio dei Portoghesi church – it is a small but beautiful example of barroque architecture (and really special for me due to the Portuguese symbology).

Depois dirijam-se ao Panteão e entrem para ficarem maravilhados com a cúpola e a clarabóia na mais antiga igreja de Roma. Depois sigam pelas ruas coloridas e parem na igreja Sant’Antonio dei Portoghesi – uma igreja pequena mas que é um exemplo lindíssimo da arquitectura barroca e particularmente especial devido a toda a simbologia Portuguesa.

Walk over to the Piazza di Spagna here, through Via dei Condotti, known for all the posh and expensive stores. Admire the view of the Trinitá dei Monti at the top of the flower covered stairs, and then admire the view down too!

Sigam até à Piazza di Spagna passando pela Via dei Condotti, famosa por todas as lojas finas e caras. Admirem a vista da Igreja Trinitá dei Monti no topo da escadaria coberta de flores e depois admirem a vista lá de cima também!

Walk back down through Via Gregoriana and spot the really cool Mascherone house, then head over to the Trevi Fountain. Marvel at the sheer size of it, as well as the skill and artistry it took to make this incredible work.

Desçam pela Via Gregoriana e vejam se reparam na casa que tem os Mascherone, seguindo depois em direcção à Fontana di Trevi. Preparem-se para ficar maravilhados com o tamanho da fonte, bem como o talento e a arte necessários para fazer este trabalho incrível.

Make a reservation at Giulio Passami L’Olio and have a good dinner to gain back your strength after a long day of travelling and exploring. And then explore some more because you’re so close to the Castel Sant’Angelo and you must see it at night with all the illumination!

Façam uma reserva no restaurante Giulio Passami L’Olio e jantem bem para recuperar forças depois de um longo dia a viajar e explorar. E depois continuem a explorar porque estão pertíssimo do Castel Sant’Angelo e vale mesmo a pena vê-lo iluminado!

Day 2 – Vatican & Trastevere

Be sure to book a City Wonders Skip the Line tour – they are in English and depart from the entrance of the Vatican Museums. Book one for early in the morning (ours was 9am) to avoid bigger crowds and to make the most of your day.

Marquem com antecedência uma visita guiada ‘Skip the Line’ com a City Wonders – as visitas são em Inglês e partem da entrada dos museus do Vaticano. Marquem a visita de manhã cedo (a nossa começou às 9h) para evitar multidões maiores e para aproveitar bem o dia.

The tour takes you in to Vatican City and through the museums with detailed information that you wouldn’t really have otherwise. It takes you through the several galleries of Vatican art, as well as the Papal Appartments decorated by Raphaello, the Sistine Chapel and finally Saint Peter’s Basilica.

A visita leva-vos ao interior da Cidade do Vaticano e pelos museus com informação que de outro modo não teriam. Passam pelas várias galerias de arte do Vaticano, bem como pelos Apartamentos Papais decorados por Raphaello, pela Capela Sistina e finalmente pela Basílica de São Pedro.

It finishes around 12pm at St. Peter’s Square and you can then take your time to go back in and explore the Basilica some more, at your own pace. And it is absolutely worth doing so as it is absolutely monumental.

A visita acaba perto do meio-dia na Praça de São Pedro e depois podem voltar para dentro e explorar melhor a Basílica, ao vosso ritmo. E vale mesmo a pena fazê-lo porque é absolutamente monumental.

Have lunch across the river and then make sure you go to Gelateria del Teatro for a delicious wafer cone with the most incredible gelato. It is also worth sitting in the square taking in Roman life as you enjoy your dessert!

Almocem do outro lado do rio e passem depois na Gelateria del Teatro para um gelato incrível num verdadeiro cone de bolacha. Também vale a pena sentarem-se na praça e observar a vida de Roma enquanto comem a sobremesa!

Visit Castel Sant’Angelo and admire the beautiful views and historical quarters. Then take a bus or a taxi and head up to Terrazza del Gianicolo – a square dedicated to Garibaldi that has the most wonderful panoramic views of Rome.

Visitem o Castel Sant’Angelo e admirem as vistas lindas e o local histórico. Depois apanhem um autocarro ou taxi e subam para a Terrazza del Gianicolo – uma praça dedicada a Garibaldi que tem vistas maravilhosas sobre Roma. 

Walk down to Trastevere and prepare to fall in love with this residential neighbourhood, its colourful buildings and streets full of ivy. Head over to the Open Door Bookshop too – a second hand Bookshop that is full of charm!

Desçam a pé até Trastevere e preparem-se para se apaixonarem por este bairro residencial, com os seus edifícios coloridos e ruas cobertas de vinha. Passem também pela Open Door Bookshop – uma livraria encantadora com livros em segunda mão!

If you still have energy head over to Campo de’ Fiori and visit Fahrenheit 451, another great bookshop.

Se ainda tiverem energia passem pelo Campo de’ Fiori e visitem a Fahrenheit 451, outra livraria óptima.

Day 3 – Ancient Rome & Monti

Start your day early at La Bottega del Caffé in Piazza Madonna dei Monti with a cappuccino and a chocolate cornetto (the Italian answer to a pain au chocolat) – made in house and simply delicious.

Comecem o dia no restaurante La Bottega del Caffé na Piazza Madonna dei Monti com um cappuccino e um cornetto de chocolate (a versão italiana de um pain au chocolat) – feitos no restaurante e simplesmente deliciosos.

Head over to the Colosseum and collect your pre-booked tickets (it is worth it!) as early after opening time as possible to avoid huge queues (we went at 8.45am). These give you access to both the Colosseum and Palatine Hill/Roman Forum.

Sigam até ao Coliseu e levantem os bilhetes reservados (vale a pena!) tão cedo quanto possível depois da hora de abertura para evitar grandes filas (nós fomos às 8:45h). Os bilhetes dão acesso tanto ao Coliseu como ao Palatino/Fórum Romano.

Start by visiting the Colosseum. Absorb the greatness of the structure and the tragic history it represents. Then take a walk towards Via Sacra and make your way to Palatine Hill. There you will find the ruins of a Roman Imperial palace – the scale of which show you just how grand and amazing the palace must have been.

Comecem por visitar o Coliseu. Absorvam a grandeza do edifício e a história trágica que representa. Depois sigam até à Via Sacra e dirijam-se ao Palatino. Lá encontrarão as ruínas de um palácio imperial da Roma Antiga – cujo tamanho dá uma ideia de quão grandioso e fantástico o palácio deve ter sido.

After you’ve explored the hill, not forgetting the view of Circus Maximus from the back, head over to the Farnese Gardens to see the beautiful flower gardens and ancient fountains, as well as admire the breathtaking (and I mean that literally) view of the Forum down below.

Depois de explorarem o monte Palatino, não esquecendo a vista do Circus Maximus das traseiras, vão até à Orti Farnesiani, o jardim onde poderão ver lindíssimas flores, fontes antigas e uma vista de cortar a respiração (literalmente) sobre o Fórum.

Walk down and take your time to explore the different bits of the forum, from the huge warehouse to the beautiful lakes and the Temple of Saturn.

Desçam e explorem as diferentes zonas do fórum com tempo, desde o enorme armazém, aos lindíssimos lagos e o Templo de Saturno.

Once you’re ready to come back to the future, head on over to Taverna dei Fori Imperiali. It is a homely looking restaurant that is quiet in a super busy area, and has delicious food and great service.

Quando estiverem prontos para regressar ao futuro, dirijam-se até à Taverna dei Fori Imperiali. É um restaurante com um ar caseiro que é sossegado numa zona super agitada e tem comida deliciosa e um óptimo atendimento.

Spend some time exploring the Monti neighbourhood and then head over to Campidoglio and the Altare Della Patria – a monument built as tribute to King Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of a unified Italy. It is absurdly huge and really impressive to visit.

Passem algum tempo a explorar o bairro de Monti e depois sigam para o Campidoglio e o Altare Della Patria – um monumento construído em homenagem ao Rei Vittorio Emanuele II, o primeiro rei da Itália unificada. É absurdamente grande e impressionante de visitar.

Walk or taxi (like we did, exhausted that we were by then) over to Basilica de Santa Maria Vittoria to retrace the steps of Robert Langdon in Angels & Demons and see Bernini’s The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa.

Sigam a pé ou de taxi (como nós fizemos, tal era o cansaço por esta altura) até à Basílica de Santa Maria Vittoria para seguir os passos de Robert Langdon em Anjos & Demónios e ver a escultura O Êxtase de Santa Teresa de Bernini.

Head back down through the Quirinale palace, home to the Italian President, and then through the Parliament to Giolitti, another great Gelateria. Here, as the lines can be busy, it is worth sitting down and ordering a bowl of ice cream. They’re delicious and it’s a great way to get a bit of a rest!

Desçam depois passando o Palácio Quirinale, residência do Presidente Italiano e depois pelo Parlamento até à Giolitti, outra óptima gelateria. Aqui, como as filas podem ser grandes e confusas, vale a pena sentar e pedir uma taxa de gelado. São deliciosas e é uma óptima forma de descansar um bocadinho!

Later head over to Santa Lucia and experience it at night – the heaters work wonders and it’s great to have a delicious meal, with some great wine, in a terrace under the stars!

Mais tarde dirijam-se ao Santa Lucia para o experiênciar à noite – os aquecedores funcionam bem e é óptimo ter uma refeição deliciosa, com um bom vinho, numa esplanada debaixo das estrelas!

Day 4 – Villa Borghese & Piazza del Popolo

Start the day with breakfast at Ciampini – it serves delicious coffee and cornetti and is located in the beautiful Piazza di San Lorenzo in Lucina that is worth visiting. Head over to Piazza di Spagna and get a taxi over to Galleria Borghese.

Comecem o dia no Ciampini – serve café e cornetti deliciosos e fica na Piazza di San Lorenzo in Lucina que é linda e merece ser visitada. Sigam para a Piazza di Spagna e apanhem um táxi até à Galleria Borghese.

To visit the Galleria it is worth booking tickets in advance as space is limited and tickets sell out quick. We didn’t know this and ended up not being able to visit…

Para visitar a Galleria vale a pena marcar bilhetes com antecedência porque o espaço é limitado e os bilhetes esgotam rápido. Não sabendo isto, nós não conseguimos visitar…

Take a walk through the calm and delightful Villa Borghese park and head over to Pincio to admire the incredible views of the Piazza del Popolo (with St Peter’s Basilica in the distance). Probably the most amazing view of this Piazza you could ever get.

Passeiem pelo calmo e agradável parque Villa Borghese e sigam até Pincio para admirar a incrível vista da Piazza del Popolo (com a Basílica de São Pedro ao fundo). Possivelmente a melhor vista desta Piazza que poderiam ter.

Head down to the Piazza and, if you can, visit the Basilica di Santa Maria del Popolo (we didn’t manage, it was a Sunday and they had back to back Mass).

Desçam até à Piazza e, se puderem, visitem a Basílica do Santa Maria del Popolo (nós não conseguimos, era domingo e tinham Missa atrás de Missa).

Walk down Via Babuino and go to Via Margutta, home to the great Federico Fellini and the location of Gregory Peck’s house in Roman Holiday (number 51). A quiet street covered in beautiful ivy, Via Margutta is an absolute dream.

Desçam a Via Babuino e vão à Via Margutta, onde viveu o grande Federico Fellini e que é onde fica a casa de Gregory Peck no filme Roman Holiday (no número 51). É uma rua calma, coberta de vinha linda – a Via Margutta é um sonho.

Find Via Gesù e Maria and have lunch at Hostaria da Pietro – don’t forget to have a biscotto with your coffee, they are delicious!

Encontrem a Via Gesù e Maria e almocem no Hostaria da Pietro – não se esqueçam de pedir um biscotto com o café, são deliciosos!

Make sure you stop by the Sant’Inacio de Loyola church near the Pantheon – a lesser known church with stunning frescoes ceilings – before collecting suitcases from the hotel and heading back to the airport.

Certifiquem-se que passam na Igreja Sant’Inacio de Loyola perto do Panteão – uma igreja menos conhecida mas com frescos lindos – antes de irem buscar as malas e seguirem para o aeroporto.

A Taxi ride to Fiumicino costs about 48€ and takes about 45 minutes through crazy Rome traffic – but make sure you get a certified taxi as these will likely be safer.

Uma viagem de Taxi até Fiumicino custa cerca de 48€ e demora cerca de 45 minutos pelo trânsito doido de Roma – mas apanhem um táxi certificado que será mais seguro.
