Bruges Travel Guide

Good morning guys! Hope you’re all doing well 🙂 As you’ll have seen from my previous post, I spent the past weekend in the beautiful city of Bruges, the UNESCO World Heritage Site which was a great centre of commerce in Europe in the Middle Ages.

Bom dia! Espero que estejam bem 🙂 Como terão visto no meu post anterior, passei o fim-de-semana na lindíssima cidade de Bruges, Património da Humanidade da UNESCO que foi um grande centro Europeu de comércio na Idade Média.

Despite its appearance as a small town, Bruges packs a lot in, from great sights and museums to stunning architecture and delicious food. Here are my top tips if you’re planning a visit.

Apesar de parecer uma cidade pequena, Bruges tem imenso para ver, desde locais históricos e museus a arquitectura fantástica e comida deliciosa. Aqui ficam as minhas dicas se estiverem a planear uma visita.

Where to stay // Onde ficar

I stayed in the boutique hotel Monsieur Maurice, which had only been open for a few days. The hotel follows a minimalist approach to decor, quite Scandinavian in style, and it’s absolutely brilliant. The reception won me over straight away – it is pink!

Fiquei no hotel boutique Monsieur Maurice, que só estava aberto há alguns dias. O hotel tem uma decoração minimalista, bastante ao estilo Escandinavo, e é fantástico. A recepção conquistou-me logo – é cor-de-rosa!

And then the simple but practical and super comfortable bedroom was incredible too. The staff was really welcoming and helpful, and the girl in reception gave me some great recommendations for places to visit and also for restaurantes and bars (more on that shortly).

E depois o quarto simples mas prático e super  confortável também era incrível. O pessoal do hotel foi super simpático e prestável, e a rapariga da recepção deu-me óptimas recomendações de sítios para visitar e também de restaurantes e bares (mais detalhes em breve).

What to visit // O que visitar

Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk

Did you know that Bruges has one of the few Michelangelo sculptures to be outside Italy? It is a Madonna and Child in white marble and it can be found in the Church of Our Lady. The detail is unbelievable, and the serenity of the Madonna while holding Jesus between her knees is absolutely striking.

Sabiam que Bruges tem uma das poucas esculturas de Miguel Ângelo que se encontram fora de Itália? É uma imagem de Nossa Senhora com o menino Jesus em mármore branco e pode ser vista na Igreja de Nossa Senhora. O detalhe da escultura é inacreditável e a serenidade de Nossa Senhora ao segurar o Menino entre os joelhos é impressionante.

Begijnhof

The Beguinage of Bruges is really worth a visit – it’s a truly peaceful place that is also really interesting. It is a set of houses built around a central chapel that was used from the 13th century to house Beguines, religious women who lived like Nuns without actually taking religious vows. The whole Square, including the simple houses and the garden covered in daffodils, is so pretty!

O Beguinage de Bruges merece mesmo ser visitado – é um local verdadeiramente pacífico e ao mesmo tempo super interessante. É um conjunto de casas construídas em torno de uma capela central, que foi usado desde o século XIII para a habitação de Beguines, mulheres religiosas que viviam como Freiras sem terem feito votos religiosos. Toda a praça, incluíndo as casas simples e o jardim coberto de daffodils, é tão bonita!

Groeninge Museum

If you are a fan of the Dutch masters (i.e. Vermeer, Rembrandt), like I am, you’re likely to appreciate the skill and artistry of the Flemish Primitives of the 15th century. The Groeninge Museum hosts an impressive collection of art works from this time and beyond, pieces of great detail and beauty. Well worth a visit!

Se forem, como eu, fãs dos mestres Holandeses (Vermeer, Rembrandt), irão provavelmente apreciar o talento e técnica dos Primitivos Flamengos do século XV. O Museu Groeninge alberga uma colecção impressionante de obras de arte dessa época em diante, peças lindas e super detalhadas. Vale bem a pena visitar!

Canal Tours

Taking a canal tour in Bruges is well worth it, especially when the weather is nice. It’s a fun experience that gives you a new perspective on the different sights. There are several boat tours around and you can pick whichever one you want to take – mine started in front of the Hotel de Tuilereen and was about 8€. The guide was great and showed us all the best sights – which I then went back to on foot to explore a bit more.

Fazer uma visita a Bruges de barco é recomendável, especialmente quando está bom tempo. É uma experiência divertida que dá uma perspectiva diferente dos vários locais. Existem vários serviços de visitas de barco, basta escolher a que querem fazer – a minha começou em frente do Hotel de Tuilereen e custou cerca de 8€. O guia era excelente e mostrou-nos os melhores locais – que eu depois voltei a visitar a pé para explorar melhor.

Where to eat

Vero Caffé

A couple of streets away from the Markt square you will find Vero Caffé – a charming coffee shop decorated in quite a minimalistic Scandinavian style that has the most delicious cakes and welcoming environment. It’s close to the centre but it’s not very busy, so it makes for a great place for a break from all the wandering around.

Umas ruas acima da praça Markt podem encontrar o Vero Caffé – um café encantador decorado ao estilo minimalista Escandinavo com os bolos mais deliciosos e um ambiente acolhedor. É perto do centro mas não é demasiado agitado, por isso é um óptimo sítio para fazer um intervalo de todo o passeio.

Bar’n Cocktail Bar

Bar’n was recommended to me by the lovely girl at the Monsieur Maurice hotel and I’m really glad I went over on my way to dinner. It is a very cool bar, small but not crowded, with incredible cocktails. If you like a good cocktail, definitely try this place.
O Bar’n foi-me recomendado pela rapariga do hotel Monsieur Maurice e ainda bem que lá fui a caminho de ir jantar. É um bar bem giro, pequeno mas não demasiado cheio, com cocktails incríveis. Se gostarem de um bom cocktail, vale a pena ir a este bar.

Amuni Restaurant

Another recommendation from the girl at the hotel was Amuni, the pizzeria in Burg square. This isn’t your average pizzeria though – it follows the ‘slow food’ philosophy and the ingredient combinations in their pizzas make it almost impossible to choose!
Outra recomendação da rapariga do hotel foi Amuni, a pizzeria da praça Burg. Mas esta não é uma pizzeria comum – segue a filosofia de ‘slow food’ e as combinações de ingredientes nas pizzas tornam a escolha quase impossível!

I asked for a recommendation and ended up getting the Gourmet pizza with Raw San Daniele ham, burrata cheese, fig mustard and Fior di Latte mozzarella – without a doubt the best pizza I have ever had. And the tiramisu I had for dessert was divine! The service was excellent, which is always a plus in my book. If you’re planning to go book in advance, the place is very popular.

Depois de pedir uma recomendação, acabei por pedir a pizza Gourmet com presunto cru San Daniele, queijo burrata, mostarda de figo e mozzarella Fior di Latte – sem exagero a melhor pizza que alguma vez comi. E o tiramisu que comi à sobremesa era divinal! O serviço foi fantástico, o que ganha sempre pontos comigo. Se estiverem a planear lá ir marquem com alguma antecedência – é um restaurante muito popular.

Hope you found this little guide useful. I think the best advice in terms of exploring Bruges is to just walk around. Get lost in the quaint little streets and appreciate the details.

Espero que tenham achado este guia útil. Acho que o melhor conselho em termos de explorar Bruges é mesmo andar. Perder-se nas pequenas ruas típicas e apreciar os detalhes.
