You may have noticed that last Friday marked the 20th anniversary of the initial episode of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, Joss Whedon’s masterpiece series that would go on for 7 seasons. I remember loving this show in the 90s and wanting to have both Buffy’s fighting skills (those kicks!!) and someone to look at me the way Angel looked at her (minus the whole vampire part).
Talvez tenham notado que na última sexta-feira foi o vigésimo aniversário do primeiro episódio da série ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, a obra prima de Joss Whedon que viria a durar 7 temporadas. Lembro-me de adorar esta série nos anos 90 e de querer ter as habilidades de combate da Buffy (aqueles pontapés!!) e alguém que olhasse para mim da maneira que o Angel olhava para ela (tirando a parte de ser um vampiro).
I didn’t remember much of the detail so I’ve been rewatching the episodes 20 years on. And it really stands the test of time! Buffy really was groundbreaking in many ways, paving the way for others to come that would elevate TV shows to art. Here are my top reasons why it’s one of the best ever (influenced by seasons 1 and 2 which I’ve rewatched over the past few days).
Já não me lembrava dos detalhes então tenho estado a rever os episódios 20 anos depois. E a série aguenta-se bem com o passar do tempo! Buffy foi inovadora de várias formas, abrindo caminho para outras séries que viriam elevar as séries de TV ao estatuto de arte. Aqui ficam as minhas razões principais pelas quais a Buffy ainda é uma das melhores séries de sempre (influenciadas pelas temporadas 1 e 2 que tenho estado a rever nos últimos dias).
#1 The kickass female lead
Buffy was the first TV show where the lead character was a tough-as-nails girl. She could hold her own in a fight, but at the same time she was also a girl, one with normal teenage problems of school and boys. And she was a true friend, who put others first in times of crisis. An inspiration to many a teenage girl in the 90s, myself included.
Buffy foi a primeira série a ter como personagem principal uma rapariga durona. Sabia-se defender em combate mas ao mesmo tempo era uma rapariga com os problemas normais das adolescentes com a escola e os rapazes. E também era uma amiga verdadeira que punha as necessidades dos outros primeiro em tempos de crise. Uma inspiração para imensas adolescentes dos anos 90, eu incluída.
#2 The witty lines
“If the apocalypse comes, beep me” was just one of the many Joss Whedon-esque one liners this show became famous for. And I don’t know if it’s because it takes me back to my teenage years but rewatching them, I still find the lines hilarious!
“Se o apocalipse vier, manda-me um beep” foi só uma das frases muito ao estilo de Joss Whedon pelas quais a série se tornou famosa. E não sei se será porque me leva de volta aos tempos de adolescente, mas ainda acho estas bocas de partir a rir!
#3 The “nerds are cool” factor
I’m going to throw this out there and say that Willow and Xander brought on an age where it’s ok to be a nerd, or just a bit dorky. The show taught us to embrace the differences in people, and to learn from each other’s strengths.
Vou arriscar e dizer que a Willow e o Xander deram início a uma época onde não faz mal ser um nerd, ou ligeiramente tótó. A série ensinou-nos a abraçar as diferenças nas pessoas e a aprender com os pontos fortes de cada um.
#4 The 90s fashion
Suddenly 90s fashion seems so cool to me again. 20 years go by and I still want to dress like Buffy. The spaghetti straps, the mini skirts with knee high boots, the plaid…some of it might be slightly outdated, but I can’t help but love it.
De repente a moda dos anos 90 parece-me tão fixe outra vez. Passam-se 20 anos e ainda me quero vestir como a Buffy. A alsas fininhas, as mini saias com botas até ao joelho, os padrões de xadrez…algumas coisas podem até ser um bocado datadas, mas não consigo não adorar!
#5 Angel (& Spike)
An enigmatic, kind, vampire-with-soul-who’s-in-love-with-a-slayer? What more could a girl want – it’s dream material! Of course the whole vampire thing puts a damper on things but good grief, the looks he gives Buffy still make me weak at the knees.
Um enigmático, gentil, vampiro-com-alma-apaixonado-pela-slayer? O que mais poderia uma rapariga pedir – isto é material de sonhos! Claro que a parte de ele ser um vampiro estraga um bocado a coisa, mas oh senhores, a forma como ele olha para a Buffy ainda me deixa a tremer.
And then there’s Spike, the ultra cool Billy Idol type of vampire that starts off as a villain and then develops brilliantly into an anti-hero and a lover to Buffy. What a phenomenal character!
E depois há o Spike, o ultra fixe vampiro estilo Billy Idol que começa como vilao e depois se torna de forma brilhante num anti-herói e um amante da Buffy. Que personagem fenomenal!
I could carry on and talk about how brilliant Joss Whedon is (because damnit, he really is!) and in how many ways Buffy changes lives by being such a phenomenon of TV culture – but these are my standout reasons why Buffy is still genius after all this time.
Podia continuar e falar do génio que é Joss Whedon (porque raios partam, é mesmo!) e das várias formas em que a Buffy mudou vidas ao ser um tal fenómeno da cultura televisiva – mas estas são as minhas razões principais que fazem com que a Buffy se mantenha uma série genial depois de todo este tempo.
Joss Whedon went on to create other remarkable TV shows (hello Firefly) and characters (ah Malcom Reynolds) but none were as long lasting and deeply impactful on so many levels as Buffy. Especially not in the lives of us 90s teenage girls who just wanted to fit in and, sometimes, kick butt.
Joss Whedon criou outras séries (olá Firefly) e personagens (ah Malcom Reynolds) incríveis, mas nenhuma tão duradoura e tão marcante em tantos níveis como a Buffy. Especialmente não nas vidas de miúdas adolescentes dos anos 90 que só queriam pertencer a alguma coisa e, de vez em quando, sentir que podiam fazer tudo.
