I remember watching Beauty and the Beast way back in the early 90s, and falling in love with the story, the characters and the songs. Belle was (and still is) my favourite Disney Princess – she is beautiful and kind, but also smart, determined and brave. So naturally, when the live action movie was announced I was beyond excited!
Lembro-me de ver A Bela e O Monstro no princípio dos anos 90 e de me apaixonar pela história, pelos personagens e pelas canções. A Bela era (e continua a ser) a minha Princesa Disney preferida – é bonita e simpática, mas também esperta, determinada e corajosa. Então quando anunciaram a nova versão do filme, fiquei para lá de entusiasmada!
Ontem era finalmente altura de ver o remake e por isso quando me dirigi ao cinema estava em pulgas! Quando saí umas duas horas depois os meus olhos estavam vermelhos de chorar, a minha cara doía de sorrir e o meu coração estava cheio porque o filme foi tudo o que eu queria que fosse – e mais um bocado.
Aside from the story itself, which I love, here are my 4 reasons to love this film.
Para além da história em si, que eu adoro, aqui ficam as razões que me levam a adorar este filme.
#1 A Fresh Twist on a brilliant Original
The story doesn’t suffer major alterations versus the original, aside from the widely discussed one where Belle is now the inventor, not Maurice. But, as people say in sports: you don’t change a winning team!
A história não sofre grandes alterações em relação ao original, tirando aquela já bastante falada de que agora é a Bela a inventora, não o Maurice. Mas, como se diz no desporto: em equipa que ganha não se mexe!
In many aspects the film stays true to the original but not in a way that makes it boring or obvious – it picks up on the original and makes it better, fresher. And then with the addition of new storylines and songs the film is both a comforting visit to your childhood, and something new that you genuinely enjoy watching.
O filme mantém-se fiel ao original em vários aspectos, mas não de uma forma que o torne chato ou óbvio – pega no original e dá-lhe um toque de frescura, torna-o melhor. Com a adição de novas histórias e canções o filme é ao mesmo tempo uma visita reconfortante à infância, e algo novo que dá gosto ver.
#2 An Enchanted Cast
Este filme consegue um feito notável ao juntar talentos enormes para contar uma história de uma forma tão bonita! Desde Ian Mckellen a fazer de Cogsworth/Horloge a Audra McDonald como Madame Garderobe ou Stanley Tucci como Cadenza, é um elenco genial. O único defeito que aponto ao filme (que é ridiculamente pequeno, mas não deixa de distrair) tem a ver com os sotaques do Lumière de Ewan McGregor(é um sotaque Francês? Porque é que ele é o único com este sotaque?) e da Mrs Potts/Madame Samovar de Emma Thompson (o sotaque Britânico do costume não chegava? Ela tinha mesmo de ir buscar uma espécie de cockney?).
Emma Watson as Belle is phenomenal. She is intelligent (an inventor) and interested, and has the elegance, the kindness and also the bravery that I’ve loved about Belle all my life. She discusses Shakespeare and can hold her own when arguing with the Beast – what a remake of a great character for the 21st Century!
Emma Watson está fenomenal como Bela. É inteligente (uma inventora) e interessada; e tem a elegância, a bondade e também a coragem que eu admirei na Bela a minha vida inteira. Conversa sobre Shakespeare e aguenta-se bem ao discutir com o Monstro – que óptimo remake de uma personagem excelente para o século XXI!
Dan Stevens as the Beast is genius – ultra charming and lovable! The character we know and love from the original is there, but is given more dimension here as we understand what led him to become so superficial (until he was cursed). And the dimension develops further as we see his relationship blossom with Belle: he’s full of quirky one liners and moments of kindness.
Dan Stevens é genial como o Monstro – super charmoso e adorável! O personagem que conhecemos e adoramos do original está lá, mas tem aqui mais dimensão já que percebemos melhor o que o levou a ser tão superficial (antes de ser amaldiçoado). E a dimensão do personagem é ainda mais desenvolvida quando vemos a sua relação com a Bela florescer: cheio de pequenas piadas e momentos de bondade.
Luke Evans is fantastic as Gaston, making him as obnoxious and self-centered as he should be, but also adding some moments that bring out the laughs.
Luke Evans está fantástico como Gaston, tornando-o tão egocêntrico e desagradável como o personagem tem de ser, mas acrescentando alguns momentos de bom humor.
And then there is Josh Gad’s LeFou, Gaston’s faithful sidekick and Disney’s first openly gay character. The witty and quietly brilliant comedic lines, plus the singing and dancing in the tavern scene are bloody amazing!
E finalmente surge Josh Gad como LeFou, o companheiro fiel de Gaston e o primeiro personagem abertamente gay da Disney. As suas frases espirituosas e subtilmente cómicas, bem como o cantar e dançar na cena da taberna são brutais!
#3 Visual Escapism
Visually this film is absolutely flawless. From the detail in the village, to the beautiful touches of grandeur in the castle, everything shows such beauty and detail!
Este filme é visualmente perfeito. Do detalhe da vila, dos lindíssimos toques de grandeza no castelo, tudo mostra imensa tanto cuidado com os detalhes e tanta beleza!
One of my favourite lines in the original film is when Cogsworth says to Belle, about the decoration of the castle in a Baroque style, that “if it ain’t baroque, don’t fix it”. The live action version was able to perfectly bring the baroque decoration of the castle to life!

#4 Music to fill you with joy
We all know the classic Beauty and the Beast songs – I love them and still know them by heart both in English and in the original Brazilian Portuguese dubbing (which was the version I grew up watching). I was really looking forward to listening to the new version, sung by a cast I love so much for their body of work. They do not disappoint.
Todos conhecemos as canções clássicas d’A Bela e O Monstro – eu adoro-as a e ainda as sei de cor tanto em inglês como na versão dobrada em portugês do Brasil (a original) com a qual cresci. Queria muito ouvir as novas versões, cantadas por um elenco que adoro por todo o seu trabalho. Não desiludem.
Emma Watson singing Belle makes me truly happy, Be Our Guest (accent aside) is fantastic and so much fun, and Emma Thompson’s Beauty and the Beast gives me shivers. There have been a few new songs added as well which fit in seemlessly with the rest of the music and story!
A Emma Watson a cantar o tema inicial, Belle, deixa-me tão feliz; Be Our Guest (tirando o sotaque) é fantástico e tão divertido; e Emma Thompson a cantar Beauty and the Beast dá-me arrepios. Também adicionaram outras canções que encaixam perfeitamente com o resto da música e da história!
I was worried about being disappointed by this film, as is often the case with remakes I’d say, but genuinely came out of the cinema feeling relived and truly happy. I’ve already bought the soundtrack and have been listening to it ever since I got back home. I think it’s safe to say this film will make it to my list of ‘top films of 2017’!
Tinha algum receio de ficar desiludida com este filme, coisa que acho que acontece muito com remakes, mas digo com franqueza que saí do cinema aliviada e mesmo feliz. Já comprei a banda sonora e tenho estado a ouvir desde que cheguei a casa. Acho que posso dizer com confiança que este filme vai estar na lista de ‘melhores filmes de 2017’!
