Oscar films to watch #1

I am a big fan of the Oscars. My first memory is of the 70th Academy Awards in 1998, which I recorded because I was so excited to see if Titanic would win Best Picture (it did, of course).

Sou uma grande fã dos Oscares. A minha primeira memória é da 70ª Cerimónia dos Prémios da Academia em 1998, que gravei porque estava ansiosa por saber se o Titanic ia ganhar Melhor Filme (ganhou, claro).

Since then I’ve been following the ceremonies and watching it in full when I can, even if I do have to work the next day.

Desde então tenho seguido as cerimónias e vejo na totalidade quando posso, mesmo tendo de trabalhar no dia seguinte.

This year I wanted to watch as many Oscar nominated films as I could, but focusing mainly on those nominated for Best Picture, before the big day which this year is the 26th Feb. Here are my thoughts on the first few I’ve watched.

Este ano quis ver tantos filmes nomeados para Oscares quanto possível, mas especialmente aqueles nomeados para Melhor Filme, antes do grande dia, que este ano é a 26 de Fevereiro. Aqui fica o que achei dos filmes que já vi.

La La Land

I’ve written a whole post dedicated to this film and mentioned it in my January favourites, so you know I loved it. It’s a really unexpected film in how it approaches music, romance, dreams and life and it moved me so much. So far my favourite.

Já escrevi todo um post sobre este filme e falei dele nos meus favoritos de Janeiro, por isso já se sabe que adorei. É um filme muito inesperado na forma de lidar com a música, o romance, os sonhos e a vida e mexeu imenso comigo. Até agora é o meu preferido.

Manchester by the Sea

A very troubling and raw account of how deeply certain moments can affect you, and how people react to loss, personal tragedy, and the changes that come with life in general. It takes a bit of thinking to fully comprehend the deep meaning of the film, but it is great and the performances, especially Lucas Hedges’, are fantastic. A more complete post here.

Um relato perturbador e cru de como certos momentos nos afectam tão profundamente, e como as pessoas reagem a perdas, tragédias pessoais e às mudanças que surgem com a vida no geral. É preciso pensar um bocado para perceber o significado profundo do filme, mas é óptimo e as actuações, especialmente a de Lucas Hedges, são fantásticas. Um post mais completo aqui.

Hacksaw Ridge

Mel Gibson returns to Hollywood and to directing with this WWII epic that tells the story of Desmond Doss, the first Conscientious Objector to win a Medal of Honor from the US Army. After fighting his superiors so that he could keep his beliefs and serve without carrying a weapon, Doss goes on to save dozens of his comrades in one of the key battles in the Pacific Front of WWII.

Mel Gibson volta a Hollywood e à cadeira de realizador com este épico da Segunda Guerra Mundial que conta a história de Desmond Doss, o primeiro Objector de Consciência a ganhar a medalha de Honra do Exército dos EUA. Depois de enfrentar os seus superiores para ter o direito a manter as suas crenças e servir na Guerra sem pegar numa arma, Doss salva dezenas dos seus camaradas numa das batalhas chave na Frente do Pacífico na 2a GG.

With battle scenes to make Saving Private Ryan blush, the film manages to not just portray the horrors of war in a gruesome, gory way, but also make a stark contrast with the almost idyllic life in Doss’ village in Virginia. Andrew Garfield is fantastic here, portraying Doss with such passion, but also innocence and humour. An Oscar would be really deserved for Best Actor.

Com cenas de batalha que fazem O Resgate do Soldado Ryan parecer levezinho, o filme consegue não só mostrar os horrores da guerra de forma crua e sangrenta, mas também marcar um contraste com a vida quase idílica na terra de Doss na Virgínia. Andrew Garfield está fantástico neste filme, interpretando Doss com uma paixão imensa, mas também com inocência e bom humor. Merecia bem o Oscar de Melhor Actor.

Lion

The story of Saroo is refreshing and beautiful. Based on a true story, Lion follows young Saroo as he gets lost from his family, thousands of miles away across India, and starts living as a street child. Many years later, after having been adopted by an Australian family and growing up comfortably, Saroo begins a quest to find the family he lost.

A história de Saroo é refrescante e bonita. Baseado  numa história verídica, Lion segue o pequeno Saroo quando ele se perde da sua família, a milhares de quilómetros de distância do outro lado da India, e começa a viver como menino de rua. Muitos anos depois, depois de ter sido adoptado por uma família na Austrália e de ter crescido com conforto, Saroo começa a busca pela família que perdeu.

Through his search he struggles with his identity and feels lost between two worlds. The story is incredibly interesting and moving, and it’s such an important subject to shed light on! There is something missing though, I think there could’ve been more to be explored while Saroo was searching for his family that could’ve added a little extra.

Ao longo da sua busca, Saroo fica confuso com a sua própria identidade e sente-se perdido entre dois mundos. A história é extremamente interessante e comovente, e é tão importante dar a conhecer este tema! No entanto acho que falta ali qualquer coisa, podiam ter explorado mais quando o Saroo procurava a sua família que desse mais dimensao à história. 

Hell or High Water

I was surprised at how much I liked this film. A bit of a cross between a western and a heist film, it follows two brothers who go on a banking robbery spree with quite a clever scheme in mind (which I won’t tell you because spoilers…), and the detective who is determined to catch them.

Fiquei surpreendida com o quanto gostei deste filme. Uma espécie de cruzamento entre um western e um filme de polícias e ladrões, o filme segue dois irmãos que roubam uma série de bancos com um esquema bastante esperto em mente (que não vos vou contar porque não quero dar spoilers…), e o detective que está decidido a apanhá-los.

Touching on issues like brotherly relationships, duty, morals, and even the financial system, this film has it all. Jeff Bridges is incredible as only he can be, and Chris Pine shows he has a much bigger talent than Star Trek allows him to showcase. Fantastic film, really worth watching – it’s on iTunes now.

Tocando em temas como as relações entre irmãos, o dever, a moral e até o sistema financeiro, o filme tem tudo. Jeff Bridges é fantástico como só ele, e Chris Pine mostra que tem um talento bem maior do que a saga Star Trek lhe permite mostrar. Filme fantástico, vale mesmo a pena ver – está já no iTunes.

Jackie

Natalie Portman is again nominated for Best Actress for her fantastic portrayal of Jackie Kennedy. The film finally touches on the subject of Jackie’s reaction to the tragedy that hit her family when her husband was killed.

Natalie Portman está mais uma vez nomeada para Melhor Actriz pela sua fantástica interpretação de Jackie Kennedy. O filme fala finalmente na reacção de Jackie à tragédia que atingiu a família quando o seu marido foi assassinado.

From the moment I saw frame 313 of the JFK video, which wasn’t published for years, I had wondered what Jackie must’ve felt like holding her husband’s body in her lap on the way to the hospital, telling her children, preparing the funeral, ensuring his legacy would live on.

Desde que vi o frame 313 do vídeo do assassinato de JFK, que durante anos não foi divulgado, pensei no que teria sentido Jackie ao segurar o corpo do marido a caminho do hospital, ao explicar o que se tinha passado aos filhos, ao preparar o funeral e ao certificar-se de que o legado de JFK seria lembrado.

And that’s what this film tells. But where it shines is in Natalie Portman’s spot on Jackie – everything from her mannerisms, to the way she spoke, the expressions in her face are so alike! An Oscar would be well deserved here.

E é isto que o filme aborda. Mas aquilo em que se destaca é mesmo na Jackie basicamente perfeita de Natalie Portman – tudo desde os seus jeitos, a forma de falar, as expressões faciais está tão parecido! O Oscar era bem merecido.
