Moana

I love a Disney film. Ever since I was a child I’ve watched them and through them let my imagination fly. I went off them for a while as some of the stories didn’t quite capture my attention, but Frozen brought me back and now Moana stuck me firmly to the ground of Disney animation movies.

Adoro filmes da Disney. Desde criança que os vejo e através deles deixei a minha imaginação voar. Desliguei um bocado durante uns anos porque algumas das histórias não captaram tanto a minha atenção, mas Frozen trouxe-me de volta e agora Moana voltou a prender-me aos filmes de animação da Disney.

Moana is the daughter of the chief (not a princess, as she mentions herself at a point) in a Polynesian tribe. She is chosen by the Ocean to set out on a special mission: to return the heart of the goddess Te Fiti and restore life to her island.

Moana é a filha do chefe (e não, como a própria faz questão de explicar, uma princesa) de uma tribo da Polinésia. É escolhida pelo Oceano para uma missão especial: devolver o coração da deusa Te Fiti e devolver a vida à sua ilha.

The heart of Te Fiti had been stolen by the demigod Maui, and so Moana must find him and get his help to accomplish her mission.

O coração de Te Fiti tinha sido roubado pelo semideus Maui, que Moana tem de encontrar e convencer a ajudá-la na sua missão.

What impressed me the most is what a strong character Moana is. Brave, determined and passionate but also responsible, caring and super funny! Auli’i Cravalho brings great personality to the character and sings so beautifully it’s hard to describe.

O que me impressionou mais foi que Moana é uma personagem de força. Corajosa, determinada e impetuosa mas também responsável, carinhosa e super engraçada! Auli’i Cravalho dá imensa personalidade à personagem e canta tão bem que nem dá para descrever.

Maui is brilliant. The character is shown as a bit of a conceited guy who still lives in the past when he was admired by all, one of guys who think they’re great. But he evolves to become Moana’s friend and comrade in achieving the mission, all the while providing several moments of genuine good humour. 

Maui é genial. O personagem é apresentado como um tipo convencido que ainda vive no passado quando era admirado por toda a gente, um daqueles tipos que se acham o máximo. Mas com o decorrer da história torna-se amigo e companheiro da Moana para conseguirem cumprir a missão, tudo enquanto proporciona vários momentos de bom humor genuíno.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is fantastic as the voice of Maui. He gives Maui the jokey side of himself that we’ve come to know thanks to things like his performance in Lip Sync Battle or his #tbt photos (fanny pack anyone?). And he’s a pretty good singer too! Have you heard ‘You’re Welcome’? Try getting that out of your head, go on, I dare you!

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson está fantástico a fazer a voz de Maui. Dá-lhe aquele lado gozão que temos vindo a conhecer no actor graças a coisas como a sua participação no programa Lip Sync Battle ou as suas fotografias #tbt (alguém se lembra da fotografia com a bolsa de cintura?). E até canta bastante bem! Já ouviram o ‘You’re Welcome’? Tentem tirar isso da cabeça, vá lá, tentem!

There isn’t a romance story in this film, but rather one of comraderie and friendship. I can’t be sure but I believe this is a first in Disney animation (at least for films with a female lead character), which together with the fact that Moana isn’t a princess per se, makes it a super important film in affirming to girls everywhere, whatever their age, that they can do anything.

Este filme não tem uma história romântica, mas fica-se antes na camaradagem e na amizade. Não tenho a certeza mas penso que é inédito na animação da Disney (pelo menos em filmes onde a personagem principal é mulher) o que, aliado ao facto de a Moana não ser exactamente uma princesa, faz deste um filme super importante no que toca a passar a mensagem a todas as raparigas pelo mundo fora, seja qual for a idade, que podem fazer tudo.

The soundtrack is phenomenal. With influences from Polynesia (Hawaii for example), the music is beautiful. And the songs, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the genius behind Hamilton, are super catchy! ‘How Far I’ll Go’, sung by Auli’i Cravalho, is so powerful. 

A banda sonora é fenomenal. Com influência da Polinésia (como o Havai, por exemplo), a música é linda. E as canções, escritas por Lin-Manuel Miranda, o génio por trás de Hamilton, ficam mesmo no ouvido! ‘How Far I’ll Go’, cantada por Auli’i Cravalho, é tão poderosa. 

I’m a very big fan of this film. It’s a turn for the more positive and modern for Disney and I applaud it. Plus it’s got a really interesting story, a carefully selected cast with roots similar to the characters’ (between New Zealand, Samoa and Hawaii) and amazing animation!

Fiquei grande fã deste filme. É uma mudança para o mais positivo e moderno para a Disney e é de fazer uma vénia. E depois a história é bem interessante, o elenco foi seleccionado cuidadosamente e tem raízes semelhantes às dos personagens (entre a Nova Zelândia, Samoa e Havai) e a animação é espectacular!

Watch it if: you need a boost of girl power and/or you like catchy songs, a cool story, The Rock, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Disney films, cool animation.
