Manchester by the Sea

Manchester by the Sea is this year’s standout film, and probably of the biggest contenders for the Best Picture award at the Oscars.

I went to watch it last weekend, and came out of the theatre feeling mostly confused. The truth is, it took me a few minutes thinking about what I’d just seen (and a couple of messages to my friends going “I’m pretty sure I missed something”) for the film to sink in, and for me to finally get the importance of it.

Fui vê-lo ao cinema no passado fim-de-semana e saí a sentir-me especialmente baralhada. A verdade é que precisei de alguns minutos a pensar no que tinha acabado de ver (e umas mensagens às minhas amigas a dizer “acho que me escapou alguma coisa”) para interiorizar o filme e para eu conseguir finalmente perceber a sua importância.

In this film, Kenneth Lonergan approaches the  effects grief has on people, how each one deals with a loss, a tragedy, a bad moment. 

Neste filme, Kenneth Lonergan trata do luto e dos efeitos que tem nas pessoas, como cada um lida com uma perda, uma tragédia, um mau momento.

Casey Affleck plays Lee, a janitor in Boston who is forced to return to his hometown when his brother dies. This deeply troubled, angry man is then dealt a bigger shock when he is told he is to be his teenage nephew’s legal guardian. 

Casey Affleck é Lee, um porteiro em Boston que é forçado a voltar à terra onde cresceu quando o seu irmão morre. Este homem perturbado e zangado recebe um choque ainda maior quando descobre que foi nomeado guardião legal do sobrinho adolescente.

The sheer fact of being in the town of Manchester seems to put a sad and heavy burden on Lee’s back, and we come to find through flashbacks that he lived through a personal tragedy so big he had to leave the place behind.

Só o facto de estar em Manchester parece por um peso triste nos ombros de Lee e descobrimos através de flashbacks que ele lá viveu uma tragédia tao grande que teve de sair.

Affleck portrays Lee with such grit, anger and vulnerability that you can’t help but feel a knot in your stomach throughout the film. You feel his struggle, his pain.

O papel de Lee é representado por Affleck de uma forma crua, com uma raiva e ao mesmo tempo uma vulnerabilidade tal que não há como não sentir um nó no estômago durante todo o filme. Sentimos o seu conflito interno, a sua dor.

Lucas Hedges plays Patrick, who suddenly finds his uncle Lee will be responsible for him. He suffers and his vulnerable, but he also shows maturity and is a grounding and calming influence on Lee.

Lucas Hedges é Patrick, que de repente descobre que o seu tio Lee vai ser responsável por ele. Sofre e é frágil, mas ao mesmo tempo demonstra maturidade e consegue trazer Lee à terra e acalmá-lo.

His performance is fantastic, giving Patrick a level of knowledge but at the same time of innocence and vulnerability that help translate the crucial message of the film.

A actuação de Lucas Hedges é fantástica, dando a Patrick o nível de sabedoria e ao mesmo tempo de vulnerabilidade que ajudam a demonstrar a mensagem crucial do filme.

That is that sometimes, as much as you want to, there are things you cannot get over. Lee finds this out in his interaction with Randi (Michelle Williams).

Que às vezes, e por muito que se queira, há coisas que não conseguimos ultrapassar. Lee descobre isto na sua interacção com Randi (Michelle Williams).

Her performance is troubling and moving: Randi has lived through personal tragedy and tries to move on, but you can tell she needs closure and something still burns inside. Your heart breaks with and for her. 

A actuação de Michelle Williams é perturbadora e comovente: Randi passou por uma grande tragédia pessoal e tenta seguir em frente, mas vê-se que precisa de uma conclusão é que alguma coisa ainda mexe com ela. O coração parte-se com e por ela.

What surprised me though, given all the praise and award nominations, was that she is barely on screen for 20 minutes!

O que me surpreendeu, no entanto, dados todos os elogios e as nomeações para prémios, foi que ela mal está no écran por 20 minutos!

This film will be especially painful and meaningful if you’ve lost someone, and/or if you’ve lived through something that meant you can’t go back to a place without being weighted down by sadness, or memories you’d rather leave behind.

Este filme será particularmente doloroso e significativo se tiverem perdido alguém e/ou se viveram alguma coisa que implique que não conseguem ir a um sítio específico sem se sentirem pesados por tristeza ou por lembranças que preferiam deixar para trás.

The writer/director tackles the themes of loss and personal tragedy as they truly are: something that leaves a mark, and has no definitive closure. People carry on, trying to learn from each event of their lives (whether they succeed or not is a different matter).

O autor/realizador lida com os temas de perda e tragédia pessoal como são realmente: algo que deixa uma marca e que não tem conclusão definitiva. As pessoas seguem em frente, tentando aprender com cada evento das suas vidas (se são bem sucedidas ou não, é outra história).

I thought the cinematography in particular was absolutely stunning. The images of the town, the way you follow the characters around, etc. The visual is perfect.

Achei a fotografia em especial absolutamente maravilhosa. As imagens da cidade, a forma como seguimos os personagens, etc. O aspecto visual está perfeito.

And the flashbacks fall in seamlessly, giving the viewer that gut wrenching feeling I mentioned before.

E os flashbacks ligam-se perfeitamente com o resto, dando a quem vê a tal sensação de nó no estômago de que falei há pouco.

Overall, Manchester by the Sea is a great film. You need to let it sink in for a bit, and think about it. In that way it is thought provoking, but that’s not the only reason. You think of what you’d feel, how you’d react. It reminds you of your own loss. Of the places in your own life you can’t think of going back to.

No geral, Manchester by the Sea é um óptimo filme. É preciso deixar assentar um bocado, pensar sobre ele. Nesse sentido, dá que pensar, mas não é a única razão para isso. Pensamos no que sentiríamos, como reagiríamos. Lembra-nos da nossa própria perda. Dos sítios nas nossas vidas onde nem queremos pensar em voltar.

Watch it if: you like a wintry, thought-provoking film; excellent performances, gut-wrenching stories.

Vejam se: gostarem de um filme invernoso e que dê para pensar; actuações excelentes e histórias que comovem.
