Copenhagen City Guide – Part 1

For the August bank holiday I wanted to go out of the UK and explore a new city. Copenhagen was the obvious choice as it had been on my list for years!

Scandinavia is a region I am fascinated by not just because of its famous sights, but also because of their history, culture, architecture, design and general way of life.

Para o feriado de final de Agosto aqui no Reino Unido, quis sair do país e explorar uma cidade nova. Copenhaga foi a escolha óbvia, já que estava na minha lista há anos!

A Escandinávia é uma região que me fascina, não só pelos monumentos e sítios famosos, mas também pela sua história, cultura, arquitectura, design e até pela sua forma de vida.

Taking a few tips from the Wallpaper City Guide Copenhagen app, as well as the Cereal magazine Copenhagen guide, off I went to explore this first stop in what I am calling my Scandi-Tour – here is the first part of my little guide with some ideas and tips if you’re heading that way…

Tirando algumas dicas da app do Wallpaper City Guide Copenhaga, bem como do guia de Copenhaga da revista Cereal, lá fui eu explorar esta primeira paragem no que eu chamo a minha Escandi-Tour – aqui fica a primeira parte do meu mini guia com algumas ideias e dicas se estiverem a planear ir para aqueles lados…

Useful tips

I decided to make the most of my trip by flying out on the Friday night – I flew with Norwegian airlines and they have quite a few flight times to choose from, as well as on board wifi which was a (very cool) first for me!

Decidi aproveitar a viagem ao máximo viajando sexta-feira à noite – voei com a Norwegian e eles têm vários horários por onde escolher, bem como wifi a bordo o que foi uma (excelente) primeira vez para mim!

After some research I found that getting the Copenhagen Card from the Tourist Information Centre first thing would be the best option – you can get these cards for 24, 48 or 72 hours, and pay only once to get access within that time to all the major museums and attractions, as well as canal boat tours, and all the transport in the city (including to/from the airport) – so that’s the first thing I did on Saturday.

Depois de alguma pesquisa, achei que ir logo comprar o Copenhagen Card no Posto de Turismo antes de fazer visitas seria a melhor ideia – o cartão pode ser comprado para períodos de 23, 48 ou 72 horas e com ele tem-se acesso durante esse tempo à maioria dos museus e atrações, viagem de barco nos canais e todos os transportes na cidade (incluindo de/para o aeroporto) – então isso foi a primeira coisa que fiz no sábado.

I managed to pack quite a lot into the 3 days I spent there, but having forgotten that some museums are closed on Mondays, I ended up missing the National Museum and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek – so keep that in mind if you’re planning a trip!

Consegui fazer bastantes coisas nos 3 dias que lá passei, mas como me esqueci que alguns museus fecham à segunda-feira, acabei por não conseguir visitar o Museu Nacional nem o Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek – portanto não se esqueçam disso se estiverem a planear lá ir!

Where to stay

On recommendation from my godmother who had been to Copenhagen recently, I stayed at the Copenhagen Plaza hotel, which is conveniently located near the Station, Tivoli Gardens and the Tourist Information Centre.

Seguindo a sugestão da minha madrinha que esteve em Copenhaga há pouco tempo, fiquei no hotel Copenhagen Plaza, que convenientemente fica localizado mesmo ao lado da Estação de comboios, dos jardins Tivoli e do Posto de Turismo.

Where to eat

If the weather is warm and sunny, I’d say do like the locals and buy some food and drink to go, and sit on the docks enjoying the sunshine, feet hanging over the water. One great place to go for this is Papirøen which has really cool vibes, yummy food and great view of the city from the river banks.

Se o tempo estiver quente e de sol, sugiro fazer como o pessoal de lá e comprar comida e bebida para levar, para desfrutar sentados nas docas com os pés a balançar por cima da água a gozar o bom tempo. Um óptimo sítio para isto é o espaço Papirøen, que tem óptimo ambiente, comida deliciosa e uma vista fantástica da cidade das margens do rio.

Otherwise I loved Café Europa in Strøget for the great food and super central location!

Para dias menos soalheiros, gostei muito do Café Europa na Strøget que tem óptima comida e fica muito bem localizado mesmo no centro!

What to visit

Christiansborg Palace

Christiansborg is the third palace to be built on the site under that name, and before that it was also the site of castles! One of its wings is currently home to the Danish Parliament, and it was the setting of Borgen, one of my favourite series of recent years.

The Palace houses the Royal Reception Rooms, which are beautiful beyond words – the library quite literally took my breath away for a couple of seconds!

You can also visit the ruins of previous castles and palaces and learn more about the history of the city, and the palace itself.

Finally, you can also visit the palace kitchen, which is set up to show you how it worked when preparing an important state dinner. It’s full of copper pots and pans and it’s really well laid out – kitchens are always my favourite things to visit in palaces and this was no exception!

Christiansborg é o terceiro palácio construído naquele local com este nome, sendo que antes tinha sido o local de castelos! Actualmente é numa das alas do palácio que fica o Parlamento Dinamarquês e como tal foi o cenário da série Borgen, que é uma das minhas preferidas dos últimos anos.

Também no palácio podemos visitar as Salas de Recepção Reais, que são lindas de cair para o lado – a biblioteca deixou-me literalmente de queixo caído durante uns segundos!

As ruínas dos antigos castelos e palácios também podem ser visitadas e são uma óptima forma de aprender mais sobre a história da cidade, e do palácio em si.

Finalmente, também se pode visitar a cozinha, que está disposta de forma a mostrar como funcionava quando se preparava um importante jantar de estado. Está cheia de panelas e utensílios de cobre e muito bem distribuída – as cozinhas são sempre a minha parte preferida de visitas a palácios e esta não foi excepção!

 

 

 

Round Tower

The Round Tower was actually one of my favourite things to visit in Copenhagen – it’s a 17th century tower that was built as an observatory, when Denmark was having a moment for its achievements in astronomy.

The spiral walk up to the observatory deck has minimal amounts of stairs (I get short of breath if I climb too many stairs, so this is a big plus!) and it’s well worth it to get amazing views of the whole old part of the city and its beautiful towers.

The simplicity of the spiral up to the top is so pretty, and the views are incredible!

A Torre Redonda foi uma das minhas visitas preferidas em Copenhaga – é uma torre do século XVII que foi construída como observatório numa altura em que a Dinamarca estava a ter um momento de fama pelas suas conquistas na astronomia.

A caminhada espiral até à plataforma do observatório tem poucas escadas (eu fico com falta de ar quando subo muitas escadas, pelo que isto é um ponto importante!) e vale mesmo a pena para ter vistas maravilhosas da parte velha da cidade com as suas torres tão bonitas.

A simplicidade da espiral até ao topo é linda e a vista é incrível!

Nyhavn

The new port is possibly the most photographed place in Copenhagen so, no surprise, it’s packed with tourists. But it’s well worth a visit: the buildings surrounding the port are lovely and colourful, and if nothing else, you should visit the yummy ice cream shop, Vaffelbageren!

O porto novo é talvez o local mais fotografado em Copenhaga, pelo que sem surpresas, está cheio de turistas. Mas vale bem a pena visitar: os edifícios à volta do porto são bonitos e coloridos e, se não forem por mais nada, devem pelo menos visitar a deliciosa loja de gelados Vaffelbageren!

 

 

 

 

Kastellet

Kastellet is one of the best preserved star shaped fortresses in Northern Europe, and was originally a Citadel founded by Danish King Christian IV – it still holds a manor, a church and a windmill, but it’s also full of beautiful buildings (used as military barracks and offices) with the Danish colours of red and white.

Kastellet é uma das fortalezas em forma de estrela mais bem preservadas no Norte da Europa e era originalmente uma Cidadela fundada pelo Rei Christian IV da Dinamarca – ainda lá podemos encontrar uma casa senhorial, uma igreja e um moinho, mas também está cheia de edifícios lindos (usados como casernas e escritórios de militares) com as cores nacionais de vermelho e branco.

 

The Little Mermaid

I was told many times that the statue of The Little Mermaid was very small, full of tourists, and not worth visiting. But my grandad had a reproduction of the sculpture in the house when I was little and it was one of my favourite things – so it was a must for me. I had to “elbow” a couple of people out of the way to get a good look, but it was worth it – it’s beautiful, and it made me happy to think of my grandparents there.

Várias vezes me disseram que a estátua da Pequena Sereia era muito pequena, cheia de turistas e que não valia a pena visitar. Mas o meu avô tinha uma réplica da escultura em casa quando eu era pequena e era uma das minhas coisas preferidas – por isso era uma paragem obrigatória para mim. Tive de “dar uns encontrões” a algumas pessoas para a poder ver bem, mas valeu a pena – é linda, e fiquei feliz de poder recordar os meus avós ali.

 

Canal Boat Tour

I decided to take the canal boat tour at sunset on my first day – it was sunny and warm and it was a dream to see all the sights at the golden hour!

Getting to see the Royal Yacht Dannebrog, and the Nyholm Guardhouse from the river, as well as going through the beautiful canals of Christianhavn, made this a really memorable experience!

Decidi fazer a visita de barco ao por do sol no primeiro dia – estava um dia soalheiro e quente e foi um sonho ver os pontos mais bonitos da cidade na hora dourada!

Ver o Iate Real Danneborg e a Casa de guarda Central Nyholm do rio, bem como atravessar os lindíssimos canais de Christianhavn, tornaram esta visita numa experiência memorável!
