Before I left for New York, I revisited some of my favourite films, TV shows and books set in The Big Apple.

Home Alone 2 Lost in New York
This was the film that made me dream of going to New York one day. I was very young when I first saw it, but it remains one of my favourites, that I can watch anytime – especially when I need a pick me up.
From Kevin’s tour of Manhattan when he first arrives, to his stay at The Plaza and trips to Central Park and Rockefeller Centre, this film makes New York seem insanely cool!
Este foi o filme que me fez sonhar com uma viagem a Nova Iorque um dia. Era muito nova quando o vi pela primeira vez, mas continua a ser um dos meus filmes preferidos, que posso ver a qualquer hora – especialmente quando preciso de ser animada.
Desde a visita do Kevin a Manhattan quando chega, à sua estadia no Plaza e as viagens ao Central Park e a Rockefeller Centre, este filme faz Nova Iorque parecer maravilhosa!
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
This Audrey Hepburn classic is one I’ve only just recently watched in full but immediately fell in love with.
The strolls through 1960’s New York and Audrey H’s fantastic style (by Monsieur Hubert de Givenchy, no less) make this movie a dream to watch!
Este clássico com Audrey Hepburn é um daqueles filmes que só recentemente vi inteiro, mas pelo qual me apaixonei logo.
Os passeios pela Nova Iorque dos anos 60 e o estilo fantástico de Audrey H (criado pelo Monsieur Hubert de Givenchy) fazem deste filme um verdadeiro sonho!

Mozart in the Jungle
This is a recent TV show favourite of mine (I’ve written a post all about this show) and I love how it portrays modern New York, a melting pot of different people, interests, cultural backgrounds, etc. The characters are amazing, the shots of NYC are brilliant and it made me want to visit even more!
Esta é uma série que recentemente se tornou uma das minhas favoritas – adoro como retrata a Nova Iorque moderna, uma mistura de diferentes pessoas, interesses, origens culturais, etc. Os personagens são fantásticos, as imagens de NYC são maravilhosas e só aumentou a minha vontade de a visitar!
Friends
Yes, I am aware that this was in fact shot in a studio in LA but it’s still meant to be set in New York…and I love it! Friends is that show that I can watch over and over again without getting bored. And it features great (albeit slightly cliché) shots of New York which I am excited to finally see in real life!
Sim, tenho noção que esta série era na realidade filmada num estúdio em LA, mas de qualquer forma é suposto passar-se em Nova Iorque…e eu sou viciada! Friends é aquela série que posso ver vezes sem conta e não me fartar. E tem imagens lindas (se bem que um pouco cliché) de NYC que eu mal posso esperar por ver ao vivo!
Gossip Girl
One of the most stylish, addictive TV shows of recent years, featuring a ton of New York sights. If I get to sit on the steps of the Met, walk past the Empire and see the Central Park spot where Chuck and Blair got married I will be a very happy girl.
Uma das séries mais estilosas e viciantes dos últimos anos, que mostra imensos pontos célebres de Nova Iorque. Se eu me puder sentar nos degraus do Met, passar pelo Empire e ver o sítio no Central Park onde o Chuck e a Blair se casaram, serei uma rapariga muito feliz.

The Catcher in the Rye
The Catcher in the Rye is perhaps one of the most famous books set in the Big Apple. It follows teenager Holden Caulfield, one of the most complex and interesting characters in American literature, over a few days of wandering around New York by himself. I read this as a 15 year old and so much of what Holden said and described resonated with me back then – so much of him and his school colleagues reminded me of friends of mine and it all made so much sense. I have started re-reading this now, a little unsure how 31 year old me will interpret things that made so much sense all those years ago.
Uma Agulha no Palheiro é talvez um dos mais famosos livros passados na Big Apple. Segue o adolescente Holden Caulfield, um dos personagens mais complexos e interessantes na literatura americana, ao longo de alguns dias em que explora Nova Iorque sozinho. Li este livro aos 15 anos e, na altura, tanto do que o Holden dizia e descrevia fez sentido para mim – tanto dele e dos seus colegas de escola me lembrava de amigos meus e tudo fazia tanto sentido. Comecei a re-ler o livro agora, um pouco incerta sobre como irei interpretar aos 31 anos, algo que fez tanto sentido há tantos anos.
The Great Gatsby
Another quintessentially New York novel, F Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece shows NYC (and the Hamptons) in all its 1920s glory – it’s beautiful, and yet dark, the characters are complex and the writing is superb. The way New York is described fills a whole imaginary of that time and it’s almost poetic. A brilliant read!
Outro dos melhores exemplos de um romance Nova-Iorquino, esta obra prima de F Scott Fitzgerald mostra-nos NYC (e os Hamptons) em toda a sua glória dos anos 20 – é maravilhoso e ao mesmo tempo misterioso, os personagens são complexos e a escrita é soberba. A forma como Nova Iorque é descrita enche todo o imaginário daquela época e chega a ser quase poética. Um livro fabuloso!
