Le Livre des Baltimore is the latest book by Joël Dicker, who has officially become my current favourite author – this is the third of his books that I’ve read and absolutely loved.
In this novel we meet up with Marcus Goldman, the narrator and author of The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair, who takes us through the story of his family with all the usual ups and downs families go through, while always alluding to a mysterious (and tragic) event which deeply marked his life/their lives.
Marcus tells us of his feelings towards the more successful, seemingly luckier side of the family, of his relationship with his cousins, and their friendship with an enchanting girl they met in their teens.
Through all of this the author touches on things that very likely hit home with many families the world over, and that definitely resounded with me: wanting the attention of people you admire/care about, the bonds of friendship with your cousins, first loves, true loves, and the idea of jealousy of people who seem to have it all (forgetting that sometimes not all that glitters is gold).
The characters are fantastically described, I felt truly connected to each one, feeling their joy, pain, struggles like my own.
The emotions they face are raw, truthful and not made to look glamorous, they are exactly what ordinary people like you or me feel in similar situations.
The cliffhangers are almost like you are watching a TV show with a dramatic season finale – from the very beginning this book has you hooked, and pulls you in to learn more and more about Marcus Goldman, his family, their story.
It’s absolutely incredible. I had not read through half of a book so quickly since I first read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone years and years ago – this book has everything to keep you reading on for hours, the story will make you go through a bunch of emotions and think about episodes of your life, in a really good way. I could not recommend this book more!

O Livro dos Baltimore é o mais recente livro de Joël Dicker, que já se tornou oficialmente no meu autor preferido do momento – este foi o terceiro dos seus livros que li e adorei.
Neste romance encontramos Marcus Goldman, o narrador e autor de A Verdade Sobre o Caso Harry Quebert, que nos leva numa viagem pela história da sua família com todos os altos e baixos que as famílias passam normalmente, sempre fazendo alusão a um acontecimento misterioso (e trágico) que marcou claramente a(s) sua(s) vida(s).
Marcus conta-nos sobre os seus sentimentos em relação ao lado da família mais bem sucedido e aparentemente com mais sorte, sobre a sua relação com os primos e a amizade que travaram com uma rapariga encantadora que conheceram ainda adolescentes.
Através do percurso desta família, o autor fala de coisas que serão familiares a muitas famílias pelo mundo fora, e que me foram muito familiares: querer a atenção de pessoas que admiramos/de quem gostamos, os laços de amizade com primos/primas, primeiros amores, verdadeiros amores, e a ideia de “inveja” de pessoas que parecem ter tudo (esquecendo que às vezes, nem tudo o que parece, é).
Os personagens são descritos com um detalhe fantástico, senti uma verdadeira ligação a cada um, sentido a sua felicidade, dor, e as suas dificuldades como minhas.
Há uma boa dose de suspense no livro que dá a sensação de que estamos a ver uma série de TV com um último episódio da temporada dramático – o livro agarra-nos desde o princípio e puxa-nos ainda mais para o meio da história e para querermos aprender mais e mais sobre Marcus Goldman, a sua família e a sua história.
É absolutamente incrível. Não tinha chegado a meio de um livro tão rápido desde que li Harry Potter e a Pedra Filosofal há anos e anos – este livro tem tudo para nos manter a ler durante horas, a história faz-nos passar por vários estados emocionais e repensar sobre episódios das nossas vidas, de uma forma óptima. Não podia recomendar mais este livro!
