One thing I really enjoy is finding films on Netflix that I hadn’t heard of before, but end up loving.

Recently I’ve noticed Testament of Youth popping up in the list of films Netflix recommended for me, and after seeing it mentioned at the BAFTAs – where a clip was played to showcase Taron Egerton’s performance as a nominee for the EE Rising Star Award – I was convinced I needed to watch it.

Uma das coisas de que mais gosto é encontrar filmes no Netflix dos quais nunca tinha ouvido falar, mas que acabo por adorar.

Recentemente reparei que um filme chamado Testemunho de Juventude aparecia na lista de recomendações que o Netflix tinha para mim e, depois de ver o filme mencionado nos BAFTAs – onde passaram um excerto do filme para demonstrar a actuação de Taron Egerton como nomeado para o prémio EE Rising Star – fiquei convencida que tinha de o ver.

Not that I took much convincing, mind – this is a film set around the First World War (and I love wartime films, be it WWI or WWII), starring Alicia Vikander and Kit Harington (two of my favourite actors at the moment) after all.

Não que precisasse muito de ser convencida, diga-se – afinal, este filme passa-se à volta da Primeira Guerra Mundial (e eu adoro filmes sobre as Grandes Guerras), com a Alicia Vikander e o Kit Harington (dois dos meus actores preferidos do momento).

Testament of Youth is based on a book by the same name by Vera Brittain, a British author, feminist and pacifist. 

A strong-minded young woman, Vera is set on pursuing her studies in Oxford despite her traditional parents wanting her to live a life more customary for a woman at that time – learn to play the piano, find a husband, be very ladylike.

As WWI breaks out, Vera sees her own plans, as well as her brother’s, fiancé’ and good friends’, change.

Following their lives over the four years the war lasted, the film takes us through the hope, heartache, anguish, and overall pain that the devastation of war can bring.

Testemunho de Juventude é baseado no livro do mesmo nome por Vera Brittain, uma autora, feminista e pacifista britânica.

Vera é uma jovem mulher decidida, e tem como sonho seguir os seus estudos em Oxford, apesar de os seus pais, mais tradicionais, quererem que ela tenha uma vida mais habitual para uma mulher daquela altura – aprender a tocar piano, encontrar um marido, comportar-se como uma senhora.

Com o início da Grande Guerra, Vera vê mudar os seus planos, bem como os do seu irmão, do seu noivo, e dos seus bons amigos.

Seguindo as suas vidas durante o curso dos quatro anos da guerra, o filme mostra-nos a esperança, mágoa, angústia, e a dor geral que a devastação da guerra pode causar.

Vera Brittain

Alicia Vikander is phenomenal in bringing Vera to life. She is graceful as a 1910s woman would be expected to be, but strong and brave, and portrays the determination, pain, strength of her character impeccably. 

Alicia Vikander é fenomenal ao dar vida a Vera. É graciosa como se esperaria que uma mulher dos anos de 1910 fosse, mas é forte e corajosa – e desempenha a determinação, dor e força da sua personagem de forma impecável.

Roland Leighton

Kit Harington portrays a very different role to the one that made him famous, Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow. But he does so in such a stunning way that you barely can think it’s the same person! Roland is a writer plagued by the fear he will never live up to his mother’s talent. He writes beautifully and feels deeply, artistic sensitivity running high. The relationship he develops with Vera, through letters exchanged over time, is beautiful and Kit Harington’s fantastic acting makes it all the lovelier.

Kit Harington desempenha um papel muito diferente daquele que lhe trouxe fama – Jon Snow, em Game of Thrones. Mas fá-lo de uma forma tão impressionante que mal pensamos que seja a mesma pessoa! Roland é um escritor atormentado pelo medo de nunca chegar aos calcanhares do talento da sua mãe. Escreve lindamente e sente de forma apaixonada, com a sua sensibilidade artística em alta. A relação que desenvolve com Vera, através de cartas trocadas ao longo do tempo, é linda e o talento de Kit Harington só a torna mais encantadora.

Edward Brittain

Taron Egerton plays Vera’s younger brother Edward, her best friend, confidante and biggest supporter. The brother/sister bond is perfectly brought to life and very moving to witness. The trials and suffering of a young man in the beginning of the 20th Century who would rather pursue the arts and his love for playing piano rather than pursuing his studies or a military career are brilliantly represented in this character, who follows (what he believes to be) his obligation to fight for freedom when WWI breaks.

Taron Egerton desempenha o papel de Edward, o irmão mais novo, melhor amigo, confidente e mais fiel apoiante de Vera. A ligação entre os irmãos é perfeitamente representada e muito comovedora. As dificuldades e o sofrimento de um rapaz no início do século XX que preferiria seguir uma carreira nas artes e a sua paixão por tocar piano em vez de continuar os seus estudos ou seguir uma carreira militar estão maravilhosamente representadas neste personagem, que acaba seguindo (o que acredita ser) a sua obrigação de lutar pela liberdade quando a Guerra começa.

This film is extraordinary. What stood out for me was the different perspective to a war movie: typically you’ll see war movies from the men’s perspective, in the front, fighting, witnessing a lot of violence, gore, death. 

In Testament of Youth we are taken through WWI from the perspective of a woman who does her best to make an active contribution to the war effort, and ends up feeling the devastation of war despite not being in the front. It’s such an interesting take on History, and on women’s roles throughout.

It is proof (if ever it was needed…) that even way back in 1914-18 we can find strong women who could still be examples to us today – not least because we should be thankful to women like Vera Brittain for insisting on studying and pursuing a career, something many women take so lightly today.

It also sheds light on the idea of pacifism, and what drove Vera Brittain to defend this as the best way for the future, which is excellent food for thought. 

This film really struck a chord with me and I have already bought the book that inspired it, to learn more about the story of this extraordinary woman.

Este filme é extraordinário. O que se destacou para mim foi a perspectiva diferente num filme de guerra: tipicamente vemos filmes de guerra da perspectiva dos homens, na frente de batalha, a combater e a testemunhar toda a violência e morte.

Em ‘Testemunho de Juventude’ viajamos através da Primeira Guerra Mundial na perspectiva de uma mulher que faz o seu melhor para contribuir activamente para o esforço de guerra, acabando por sentir a devastação que ela causa apesar de não estar na frente de combate. É uma forma super interessante de olhar para a História, e para o papel das mulheres nela.

É prova (se alguma prova fora necessária) que até nos longínquos anos de 1914-1918 podemos encontrar mulheres fortes que ainda podem ser exemplos para nós hoje em dia – nem que seja porque temos de agradecer a mulheres como Vera Brittain por terem insistido em estudar e seguir uma carreira, algo que muitas mulheres de hoje tomam como garantido.

Também toca na ideia do pacifismo e no que levou Vera Brittain a defendê-lo como o melhor caminho para o futuro, o que dá que pensar.

‘Testemunho de Juventude’ é, para mim, marcante – e já comprei o livro que lhe serviu de base, para aprender mais sobre a história desta extraordinária mulher.
