Mad Max: Fury Road // Mad Max: Estrada da Fúria

Mad Max: Fury Road was the first Oscar Best Picture nominee I saw this year, which was fitting given its release date was all the way back in Summer. One thing I have to admit: I am a Mad Max newbie – I was aware of the films, but aside from knowing it was a post-apocalyptic setting, Mel Gibson played Max and Tina Turner had a role, as well as a kick-ass song, in one of the original films, I knew very little. But the reviews were great, and I was very curious. And George Miller, the brilliant director, did not disappoint.

Mad Max: Estrada da Fúria foi o primeiro dos nomeados para o Oscar de Melhor Filme que vi este ano, o que calhou bem tendo em conta que estreou no verão passado. Uma coisa que devo admitir: sou uma estreante nos filmes Mad Max – conhecia os filmes, mas para além de saber que se passavam num mundo pós-apocalíptico, que o Mel Gibson era o Max e que a Tina Turner teve um papel, bem como uma música brutal, num dos filmes originais, sabia muito pouco. Mas teve muito boas críticas e eu estava curiosa. E George Miller, o brilhante realizador, não desiludiu.

Story // História (No Spoilers!)

In a post-apocalyptic desert land, crazed people are fighting for the basics such as food and water, which are being held hostage by the gang leader Immortan-Joe. Originally setting out to get gasoline for Joe, Imperator Furiosa takes his five wives and goes rogue, believing that the only way to survival means going back to her homeland. Max, a lonely road warrior captured by Joe’s War Boys, is being used as a blood bag for the sickly Nux, and winds up dragged into the immense chase that ensues.

Num deserto pós-apocalíptico, as pessoas enlouquecidas lutam por coisas básicas como água e comida, que são controladas por Immortan-Joe. Tendo como missão original recolher gasolina para Joe, Imperator Furiosa leva as Cinco Mulheres deste e decide seguir a sua própria missão, já que acredita que a única forma de sobreviverem é regressarem à sua terra natal. Max, um solitário guerreiro da estrada capturado pelos War Boys de Joe, está a ser usado como saco de sangue para o doente Nux, e vê-se arrastado para a imensa perseguição que se segue.

Tom Hardy’s Max is a man of very few words. We know he is haunted by not being able to save a child from his past, and that he keeps to himself, treasuring his freedom and his car above all. At the beginning of the film Max’s objective is to escape and go back on the road alone, however he understands Furiosa’s goal and becomes involved in their escape. The character development is really interesting, as you can clearly see him come out of his shell and become more active, once he realises what’s at stake.

O Max de Tom Hardy é um homem de muito poucas palavras. Sabemos que vive atormentado por não ter conseguido salvar uma criança no seu passado, e que é solitário, valorizando a sua liberdade e o seu carro acima de tudo. No início do filme o objectivo de Max é fugir e voltar a fazer-se à estrada sozinho, no entanto vemos que ele acaba por perceber o objectivo de Furiosa e acaba por se deixar envolver na fuga. O desenvolvimento do personagem é muito interessante, já que vemos claramente a sua abertura e o seu envolvimento na história, uma vez que se apercebe do que está em jogo.

Charlize Theron is a babe. A bad-ass babe. Furiosa is a brilliant character, a modern interpretation of the heroine of a story. Although it is clear from her physical appearance that she has lived through tough times, Furiosa is guided by what is right, has very strong morals and huge determination. Plus, she is tough as nails and takes absolutely no crap. A character for the history books, for sure!

A Charlize Theron é uma braza. Uma braza durona. A Furiosa é uma personagem espectacular, uma interpretação moderna do que deve ser a heroína da história. Embora seja claro pela sua aparência física que ela já passou por tempos duros, Furiosa é guiada pelo que acha certo, tem princípios morais muito fortes e enorme determinação. Além disso, é resistente como tudo e não se deixa levar. Uma personagem para os livros de história, definitivamente!

Nux

Nicholas Hoult is both unrecognisable and absolutely brilliant as Nux. Starting off a sickly War Boy willing to go to any length to impress and please Immortan-Joe, and hoping to find his way to the mythical Valhalla, Nux has a change of heart during the film and begins to understand and fight with/for Furiosa and the five wives.

Nicholas Hoult está irreconhecível e absolutamente espectacular como Nux. Começando como um War Boy adoentado disposto a tudo para impressionar e agradar Immortan-Joe, esperando encontrar o caminho para a mítica Valhalla, Nux passa por uma mudança durante o filme, compreendendo então e lutando com/por Furiosa e as cinco mulheres.

What I thought // O que achei

This is a film that grows on you. When I first finished watching it I was very confused, but the more I thought about the story, the characters, the underlying themes, even the cinematography, the more I loved it!
Survival is the most obvious theme in this film, but the search for redemption and for family (blood, or otherwise) and the despair that leads to irrational acts are also there and make the most striking impact, without you even noticing. Not to mention, of course, the theme of female empowerment, which is evident as you follow Furiosa and the wives – and is inspiring!
Finally, there’s the visual aspects: the cinematography is stunning. It’s incredible how the Fury Road team managed to transform a car chase in a desert into a thing of beauty. The makeup and costume designs are fantastic – the way they are used to help the viewer create a certain image of the different characters is amazing.
Overall I was very impressed with this film. I was not sure what to expect but it wasn’t exactly on top of my list of films to watch – but I am so glad I did!

Este é daqueles filmes que melhoram quanto mais pensamos neles. Quando acabei de o ver estava super confusa, mas quanto mais pensei sobre a história, as personagens, os temas subjacentes, até a cinematografia, mais adorei o filme!
O tema mais óbvio neste filme é a sobrevivência, mas a busca por uma redenção, pela família (de sangue, ou não) e o desespero que leva a actos irracionais também estão presentes e deixam uma impressão marcante, sem nós darmos por isso. Já para não falar, claro, do poder atríbuido às mulheres que é evidente enquanto seguimos Furiosa e as cinco mulheres – e é inspirador!
Finalmente, temos os aspectos visuais: a cinematografia é maravilhosa. É incrível como a equipa de Estrada da Fúria consegue transformar uma perseguição automóvel no deserto num exemplo de beleza. A maquilhagem e o guarda-roupa são fantásticos – através deles cria-se uma imagem específica dos personagens de forma genial.
No geral fiquei muito bem impressionada com este filme. Não sabia o que esperar, mas não estava exactamente no topo da minha lista de filmes para ver – mas ainda bem que vi!
