As I mentioned in my Creed post, there are two exceptions to the Oscar Movie Challenge this year. This is the second. Joy is the most recent film written and directed by David O. Russell, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Robert DeNiro and Bradley Cooper. In other words, the fab four responsible for one of my favourite movies of all time, Silver Linings Playbook.

Como referi no meu post sobre Creed, há duas excepções no meu Desafio de filmes dos Oscars 2016. Esta é a segunda. Joy é o mais recente filme escrito e realizado por David O. Russell, com Jennifer Lawrence, Robert DeNiro e Bradley Cooper nos principais papéis. Portanto, os quatro fantásticos responsáveis por um dos meus filmes preferidos de sempre, Silver Linings Playbook. 

Story // História (no spoilers!)

Joy is based on the life of Joy Mangano, famous american inventor and self made woman, known for her invention of the Miracle Mop, among other products which she sold through TV shopping channels such as QVC or HSN.
The movie follows Joy from a little girl with dreams of creating wonderful things to struggling divorced mother of two with an ex-husband who lives too close, a needy mother and a father with no boundaries, her only support coming from her grandmother and her best friend.
It then sees Joy blossom as an inventor determined to sell her product, despite too many problems being thrown her way. It’s an incredible true story, one that should inspire women everywhere to know that they can do what they choose, provided they are not afraid of working hard and sticking to their guns.

Joy é baseado na vida de Joy Mangano, uma famosa inventora e ‘self made woman’ americana, conhecida pela invenção da Miracle Mop, entre outros produtos que vendeu através de canais de teleshopping como QVC ou HSN.
O filme segue Joy de menina com sonhos de criar coisas maravilhosas, até mãe divorciada em dificuldades financeiras, com um ex-marido que vive perto demais, uma mãe carente e um pai sem noção dos limites, o seu único apoio vindo da avó e da melhor amiga.
Vemos então Joy florescer como uma inventora determinada a vender o seu produto, apesar dos demasiados problemas que lhe surgem pelo caminho. É uma fantástica história verídica, que deve inspirar mulheres por todo lado a saber que podem fazer aquilo que escolherem, desde que não tenham medo de trabalhar muito e de defender as suas ideias.

Characters // Personagens


Joy is an incredibly strong woman. Struggling to make ends meet, with two young children, parents and an ex-husband that depend on her, she still keeps her cool enough to know that what she needs is a something that will be useful to many people like herself, something that will speak to the masses. During the course of the film Joy goes from being exhausted, to overwhelmed, to determined, to devastated, to tough and even more determined. Jennifer Lawrence shows an acting range beyond her years, she gives this character such life, such emotion and truth that you are kind of fist pumping when something goes right, and lunging toward the screen to show her wrong-doers what’s good. I haven’t yet seen the other contenders for Best Actress, but I risk saying right now that J-Law is a shoe in.

Joy é uma mulher verdadeiramente forte. Com dificuldades financeiras, dois filhos pequenos, pais e um ex-marido que dependem dela, ainda consegue manter a cabeça fria o suficiente para saber que o que ela precisa é de inventar algo que seja útil para muitas pessoas como ela.
Ao longo do filme, Joy passa de exausta, a sobrecarregada, a determinada, a devastada, a rija, a ainda mais determinada. Jennifer Lawrence mostra uma versatilidade enorme neste papel, dá uma vida, uma emoção e uma honestidade à sua personagem que damos por nós a dar murros no ar quando algo lhe corre bem, e a correr para o ecrã para mostrar o que é bom a quem lhe faz mal. Ainda não vi as outras nomeadas para Melhor Actriz, mas arrisco dizer que Jennifer Lawrence tem isto quase garantido. 

Robert DeNiro as Joy’s father Rudy is as funny as he is irritating. His performance is so believable though! He drives the film forward in many ways, and this is excellent work by one of the world’s greatest actors.


Robert DeNiro como Rudy, o pai de Joy é tão engraçado como é irritante. A actuação é tão credível! Ele leva o filme para a frente de várias formas e este é um trabalho fantástico por um dos melhores actores do mundo.

Bradley Cooper as Neil Walker, head of QVC who gives Joy her shot, has a small, but extremely important role in the story. He is incredibly charming as always, and a perfect fit for the role. It’s through him that we understand the importance of Joy’s arrival to QVC, since she was the first non-celebrity woman to sell products in the channel, making her success that way.

Bradley Cooper como Neil Walker, chefe do QVC que dá uma oportunidade a Joy, tem um papel pequeno, mas extremamente important na história. É um poço de charme, como sempre, e uma óptima escolha para o papel. É através dele que compreendemos a importância da chegada de Joy ao QVC, uma vez que ela foi a primeira mulher não celebridade a vender produtos neste canal, assim fazendo o seu sucesso.

What I thought // O que achei


I didn’t love Joy as much as I loved Silver Linings Playbook. However, it is much, much closer than American Hustle, Russell’s previous film.
The story goes up and down between exciting, engaging moments and dull, slow parts that distract you. However I admit that I felt absolutely inspired by the journey Joy goes in to succeed, to stand her ground without taking crap from anyone. She’s a true #girlboss and that in and of itself makes the film worth a watch!

Não adorei Joy tanto quanto tinha adorado Silver Linings Playbook. No entanto está muito, muito mais perto do que American Hustle, o anterior filme de Russell.
A história tem altos e baixos entre momentos emocionantes e cativantes e outras tantas partes lentas e um pouco chatas que distraem da história. No entanto admito que me senti completamente inspirada pelo percurso de Joy até chegar ao sucesso, mantendo-se firme sem aceitar as tretas de ninguém. É uma verdadeira #girlboss e isso só por si faz com que valha a pena ver o filme!
