Bridge of Spies is the latest movie with Steven Spielberg behind the camera in the director chair, and Tom Hanks in front of it.
It’s a movie masterpiece, like I haven’t seen in a good few years. The story has you on the edge of your seat, even more so if you keep in mind that it is based on true events. Which, to me, is an important point: it is based on true events, which means obviously that some creative liberties were taken – it isn’t a documentary or a reconstruction after all.
Bridge of Spies (A Ponte dos Espiões) é o mais recente filme que conta com Steven Spielberg como realizador, e com Tom Hanks no principal papel.
É uma obra-prima do cinema, como não via há já alguns anos. A história agarra o espectador desde o primeiro segundo, especialmente se tivermos em conta que o filme é baseado em factos reais. Agora isto é importante: o filme é baseado em factos reais, o que obviamente significa que foram feitas algumas alterações para tornar a história mais interessante – afinal não é um documentário nem uma reconstrução.
Story // História (no spoilers!)
The film follows James B. Donovan, an attorney from Brooklyn, who is hired to represent Rudolf Abel, a Russian man accused of espionage in the US. As he begins to know Abel’s good nature, he becomes involved in making sure he gets a fair trial – despite all the criticism, danger and hate he faces for doing so. The fear (and huge prejudice deriving from it) in Americans with regards to Russians in the Cold War period is painfully evident.
As events roll out, it becomes necessary to arrange a prisoner exchange with Russia and East Germany, and as someone who is involved with Abel’s case, Donovan is sent to Berlin to negotiate the trade, going back and forth between East and West, making contacts and putting his life on the line.
O filme conta a história de James B. Donovan, um advogado de Brooklyn, que é contratado para representar Rudolf Abel, um russo acusado de espionagem nos EUA. À medida em que vai conhecendo melhor a boa natureza de Abel, Donovan decide certificar-se que o seu cliente recebe um julgamento justo – apesar de todo o criticismo, perigo e ódio que recebe por o fazer. O medo (e preconceito daí proveniente) nos americanos face aos russos durante a Guerra Fria é evidente.
Com o desenrolar da história, torna-se necessário organizar uma troca de prisioneiros com a Russia e a RDA e, como alguém que já conhece bem o caso de Abel, Donovan é enviado para Berlim para negociar a troca, andando entre Este e Oeste da cidade, fazendo contactos e arriscando a vida.

Characters // Personagens
Donovan – Starting off somewhat reluctant to defend Abel, Donovan becomes shocked with the prejudice with which his client is being treated. He is a man of principle and chooses to do what is in his power to ensure his client is treated accordingly to the law (why should he not be given the same rights as everyone else?!). As a negotiator he also goes above and beyond what is asked of him, to follow his conscience. He struggles between doing what he feels is right, and keeping his family, his boss, his country happy – and he is all the more interesting for it! Tom Hanks is absolutely perfect in this role, he brings it to life like only he could. A career best performance for sure – and I am a big fan of Tom Hanks!!
Donovan – Começando um pouco de pé atrás em relação à defesa de Rudolf Abel, Donovan depressa fica espantado com o preconceito que rege a forma como o seu cliente é tratado. É um homem de princípios e escolhe fazer tudo o que pode para que o seu cliente seja tratado de acordo com a lei (porque é que ele não havia de ter os mesmos direitos que qualquer outra pessoa?!). Como negociador também vai para além do que lhe é pedido, para seguir a sua consciência. Debate-se entre fazer o que sente que está certo e manter a sua família, o seu chefe, o seu país felizes – e é muito interessante exactamente por essa luta interna. Tom Hanks está perfeito neste papel e dá-lhe vida como só ele sabe. De certeza uma das melhores interpretações da sua carreira – e isto dito por alguém que é grande fã de Tom Hanks!
Abel – the Russian spy is a gentle soul. He is aware of what lies in store, of the risks he takes, and yet he maintains his honour above all. He is kind, calm and even funny – making you ache at the way he is being treated! Mark Rylance is brilliant in this role, bringing an element of humanity to the idea of a Cold War spy.
Abel – o espião russo é um homem gentil. Tem noção do que o espera, dos riscos que corre, e ainda assim mantém a sua honra acima de tudo. É amável, calmo e até engraçado – o que causa ainda maior revolta em relação à forma como o tratam. Mark Rylance está fabuloso neste papel, dando um elemento de humanidade à ideia de um espião na Guerra Fria.
What I thought // O que achei
The movie is fantastic. The story is gripping, the characters are relatable, and you feel all the emotions they do, it is expertly conveyed. I loved the story from beginning to end, the cinematography is beautiful, the actors are fantastic and, of course, it is wonderfully directed.
Being a bit of a History geek, one little detail stuck out to me: the only information to when the film is set comes in the beginning, when we’re told we’re in 1957. When Tom Hanks arrives in Germany the Berlin Wall is being built, with people being killed in the death strip (the area between the two walls). Now, although Berlin was separated by then, the wall wasn’t actually built until 1961, and it didn’t get to the final stage (with a second wall and a death strip in the middle) until mid-1962.
Historical accuracy aside, though, I was thrilled to see this film, it had me hooked, Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance are fantastic, and I would really recommend watching it!
O filme é fantástico. A história é emocionante, os personagens são verdadeiros e conseguem fazer-nos sentir as suas emoções – tudo é habilmente transmitido a quem vê. Adorei a história do princípio ao fim, a cinematografia é lindíssima, os actores são óptimos e, claro, está maravilhosamente realizado.
Gostando eu de História, houve um detalhe que me chamou a atenção: a única indicação de tempo surge no início, dizendo que estamos em 1957, e quando Tom Hanks chega à Alemanha, vemos a construção do Muro de Berlim, com pessoas a serem mortas na faixa da morte (a área entre os dois muros). A questão é que, embora Berlim já estivesse dividida, o Muro em si não começou a ser construído até 1961; e não estava completo (com o segundo muro e a “faixa da morte”) até meados de 1962.
Exactidão histórica à parte, adorei ver este filme, prendeu-me desde o início, Tom Hanks e Mark Rylance estão fantásticos – recomendo vivamente!
